A Vulnerability Assessment Methodology For Critical Infrastructure Sites, George Baker Jan 2005

A Vulnerability Assessment Methodology For Critical Infrastructure Sites, George Baker

Selected Works

Highly efficient, complex, and interdependent infrastructure systems including electric power, telecommunications, transportation, water utilities, food distribution, housing and shelter, public health, finance and banking are foundations of modern societies. Over the last 3 years, the United States has become acutely aware of the importance of civil infrastructures and their criticality to the nation’s economy and quality of life. Our reliance on these systems makes them especially attractive targets for attack. To understand and correct exploitable susceptibilities of critical infrastructure facilities, infrastructure providers and regional planners need a common, repeatable, systematic methodology to understand the comparative risks and vulnerabilities and determine …

Flaws In Orr’S Laws (And The Paradigm That Produced Them): An Abbreviated Response, Nicole Haynes Mccoy, Sheldon Atwood Jan 2005

Flaws In Orr’S Laws (And The Paradigm That Produced Them): An Abbreviated Response, Nicole Haynes Mccoy, Sheldon Atwood

Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)

Conservation of biological diversity is often hampered by ignorance and short-sightedness. Yet knowledge is not enough; biology illuminates ecological relationships, but it alone cannot conserve ecosystems. Therefore, we agree that there is no higher priority for conservation biologists than to improve their understanding of economics (Orr 2004, Law 1). Unfortunately, from many of his comments and the tenor of subsequent responses (Hayes 2004; Vitek 2004; Lovejoy 2004), it is evident that economics and, more important, parallels between ecology and economics are misunderstood, implying the two disciplines are more different than they are and that knowledge of economics is primarily needed …

Prediction Of The Tenderness Of Cooked Poultry Pectoralis Major Muscles By Near-Infrared Reflectance Analysis Of Raw Meat, Bradley R. Cheatham Jan 2005

Prediction Of The Tenderness Of Cooked Poultry Pectoralis Major Muscles By Near-Infrared Reflectance Analysis Of Raw Meat, Bradley R. Cheatham

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Tenderness in boneless poultry breast meat is of utmost importance to consumers. However, there is currently no nondestructive method to predict poultry breast meat tenderness. Textural properties of poultry breast meat were predicted by near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy. Spectra were collected on 390 poultry Pectoralis major muscles from broiler carcasses to examine the correlation between NIR spectroscopy and the Meullenet-Owens Razor Shear (MORS) test. Two instrumental parameters (maximum shear force and total shear energy) were used as estimates of meat tenderness. Calibration (R2 cal) and validation (r2 val) coefficients of determination were used for predicting instrumental measurements using the reflectance, …

Use Of Calcium Hypochlorite As A Sanitizer For Seeds Used For Sprouting: Task #2; Impact: Improved Alfalfa Decontamination Technologies, Emily Damron, Carrie Klein, Melissa Leach, Jordan Mourot, Tom Murphy, Amy Seamans, Ryan Wilson Jan 2005

Use Of Calcium Hypochlorite As A Sanitizer For Seeds Used For Sprouting: Task #2; Impact: Improved Alfalfa Decontamination Technologies, Emily Damron, Carrie Klein, Melissa Leach, Jordan Mourot, Tom Murphy, Amy Seamans, Ryan Wilson

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Consumption of raw or lightly cooked alfalfa sprouts has been a concern of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in recent years due to connections between sprouts and foodborne illnesses. Researchers have identified, contaminated seeds as the primary source of alfalfa sprouts contamination. Contamination of alfalfa seeds can originate in the field, harvesting, storing, or sprouting. Two pathogens of particular concern on alfalfa seeds are Escherichia coli 0157:H7 (E. coli) and Salmonella. These pathogens are capable of producing biofilms that provide protection for individual cells and allow for survival in otherwise hostile environments, including some disinfectant washes. Other factors …

Ruminations On Dissemination: Limits On Administrative And Judicial Review Under The Information Quality Act, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2005

Ruminations On Dissemination: Limits On Administrative And Judicial Review Under The Information Quality Act, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

Supporters call it "one of the most significant developments in the federal rulemaking system since passage of the Administrative Procedure Act." Opponents suggest that it "may well prove the most destructive half-page of law that most people do not know is on the books." It is the Information Quality Act, enacted in 2000 as a two paragraph rider to appropriations legislation for the 2001 fiscal year. While it was supposed to improve the quality of information that the government relies upon in decision making, critics assert that the Act contributes to the ossification of rulemaking, encourages agencies to make decisions …

Carbon-14: Basics Of The System And Its Use In Dating Secondary Mineralizations On Degraded Concrete, Sarah Grondin Jan 2005

Carbon-14: Basics Of The System And Its Use In Dating Secondary Mineralizations On Degraded Concrete, Sarah Grondin

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Carbon 14, the radioactive isotope of carbon, provides an isotopic dating system that is very useful in detennining ages for fairly recent, organic, fossilized materials. Paleoclirnatic studies benefit from the use of the carbon system, because carbon 14 can provide an age for a structure and stable carbon isotope variations provide indications about past climate trends. The system can also be used to calculate ages for inorganic materials, specifically building materials partially composed of lime. The creation of the building materials involves burning fossil limestone, and allows the capture of atmospheric carbon dioxide, as the material hardens after construction. Often …

Bioactive Glass Coatings For Adherence To Bone Tissue, Wesley Trueblood Jan 2005

Bioactive Glass Coatings For Adherence To Bone Tissue, Wesley Trueblood

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The purpose of the experiments for this research project was to determine whether certain compositions of borate-based glasses are bioactive and can be used to bond titanium pins to bone. Two different major experiments were done. The first experiment was done to determine the bioactivity of the glass. The second experiment was done to simultaneously determine the bioactivity of the glass and determine whether or not the glass would bind to titanium and bone.

The majority of the research consisted of working with different compositions of borate-based glass, making glass pins, and coating titanium pins with the glass. The making …

Lead Tolerant Bacteria Could Be The Future Of Bioremediation, Kendra Waltermire Jan 2005

Lead Tolerant Bacteria Could Be The Future Of Bioremediation, Kendra Waltermire

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The contamination of soil, sediment, and water by toxic metals is a major problem worldwide, both environmentally, and economically. Microorganisms that are resistant to lead are rare in nature. Lead is toxic to most microorganisms and only a few have developed mechanisms to survive in this toxic environment In this study, bacteria found in soil and water with high concentrations of soluble lead are isolated and characterized. I grew and isolated bacteria that are resistant to the lead found in the solid medium. A gram stain was used to characteristically determine the bacteria that were isolated. Four isolated bacteria were …

High Pressure Water Jet Contaminant Remediation Of Intertidal Sediment Via Distributed Granular Activated Carbon, Rachel Dilly Jan 2005

High Pressure Water Jet Contaminant Remediation Of Intertidal Sediment Via Distributed Granular Activated Carbon, Rachel Dilly

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Hunters Point Naval Shipyard lies on western intertidal coastline and is designated as a Superfund site. Studies indicate sediment dwelling organisms that usually thrive in this intertidal area are now suffering and dying from PCB toxins. Experts have discovered that PCBs adsorb onto Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) particles, a material commonly used for contaminant remediation. Using a water jet, the GAC can be distributed in situ throughout the top IO cm. of sediment. Research measures will include reproducing the natural, intertidal habitat in the UMR High Pressure Water Jet Laboratory. Specifically, to realize optimal benefits from the remediation process, a …

State Ballot Initiatives In The Federal Preemption Equation: A Medical Marijuana Case Study, K.K. Duvivier Jan 2005

State Ballot Initiatives In The Federal Preemption Equation: A Medical Marijuana Case Study, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

As with the political reform initiatives, this second type of ballot initiative represents a category for which the initiative process is especially appropriate: issues requiring experimentation in the area of health, traditionally a topic of strong concern at the state level. Furthermore, this category of initiative does not suffer from the ills that detractors note in other contexts. These initiatives expand personal rights and do not infringe on others' rights, and they address elemental issues, so citizens can be sufficiently informed to cast votes representing their convictions. These types of initiatives, however, confront a significant problem. They frequently involve areas …

Growth Rates Of Interface-Feeding Spionid Polychaetes In Simulated Tidal Currents, Brian T. Hentschel, Brenda S. Herrick Jan 2005

Growth Rates Of Interface-Feeding Spionid Polychaetes In Simulated Tidal Currents, Brian T. Hentschel, Brenda S. Herrick

Journal of Marine Research

Most spionid polychaetes switch from surface deposit feeding to suspension feeding as current speed and the flux of suspended food increase. Previous experiments testing the effects of flow on the growth of facultative, interface feeders have been limited to very simplified flow regimes such as constant, unidirectional currents. To measure the growth of interface-feeding spionids in more realistic currents, we programmed two identical counter-rotating annular flumes to simulate two different semidiurnal tidal currents. Each regime included four speeds that varied in hourly steps. At 5 mm above bottom, speeds in the slower flow regime were 0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 …

Developing An International Children’S Library Collection: Issues And Laudable Suggestions, Anamika Dasgupta

Faculty and Staff Publications

This paper explores the issues in developing international children's library collections. Although promoting global awareness among children is no longer easily debatable, many libraries, big and small, rich and poor, are lagging behind when it comes to implementing the concept of having a collection of international children's literature. In addition, this paper suggests some strategies to diversify international children's collections by incorporating resources in variety of formats such as print, digital, and artifacts. Further, it lists some important resources for librarians to look at as they work towards developing their international children's library collections.

G05-1576 Safe Use Of Animal Medicines, Arden Wohlers, David R. Smith, Dicky D. Griffin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide promotes exercising caution while working with livestock medications.

Veterinary drugs, including antibiotics, antiparasite medications and vaccines, play an important role in the control and prevention of disease in all livestock. However, there is risk when working with animals and animal medicines. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have strict rules regulating the prescription, distribution and use of animal medications and chemicals. Regulations on how a drug is stored, administered, and disposed of ensure product safety to the producer, animal, consumer and environment.
