Decision Analysis Using Value-Focused Thinking To Select Renewable Alternative Fuels, Eric A. Queddeng Mar 2005

Decision Analysis Using Value-Focused Thinking To Select Renewable Alternative Fuels, Eric A. Queddeng

Theses and Dissertations

The United States relies on imported oil as a result of domestic petroleum consumption rates greatly exceeding production rates. Alternative fuels are a major force in the effort to reduce petroleum consumption in the transportation industry. The transportation industry also accounts for 1/3 of all greenhouse gas emissions and nearly half of all cancers attributed to outdoor sources of pollutants. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the economic and environmental feasibility of renewable alternative fuels and associated blends (ethanol, methanol, 100% biodiesel (B100), 20% biodiesel (B20) and e-diesel) compared to non-renewable alternative fuels (compressed natural gas and propane) …

Evaluation Of Fuel Oxygenate Degradation In The Vadose Zone, David A. Torres Mar 2005

Evaluation Of Fuel Oxygenate Degradation In The Vadose Zone, David A. Torres

Theses and Dissertations

Groundwater contamination by petroleum products poses a potential human health and safety risk. Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) was a commonly used fuel oxygenate that was added to gasoline to meet environmental regulations. The widespread use of MTBE resulted in significant contamination of drinking water supplies across the United States. This research evaluated the degradation characteristics of potential alternative fuel oxygenates in the vadose zone. One fuel oxygenate being considered as an alternative to MTBE is diisopropyl ether (DIPE). Specifically, this thesis sought to answer three research questions: what is the potential for DIPE degradation in soil without prior microbial augmentation, …

“This Is In Brief My Remenence Of My Army Life” The Civil War Memoir Of Louis Bir, J. D. Fowler Mar 2005

“This Is In Brief My Remenence Of My Army Life” The Civil War Memoir Of Louis Bir, J. D. Fowler

Faculty Articles

Louis Bir was a typical Civil War soldier in most respects. He was young, only nineteen years old at the time of his enlistment in the Ninety-Third Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment in 1862, and he was anxious for a grand adventure. For the remainder of the war, Bir traveled across the Western Theater, experiencing the horrors of combat, the agony of wounds, and the monotony of camp life. Fortunately for future generations of historians, Bir was atypical of most Civil War soldiers in that he left a record of his experiences. This record offers a fascinating glimpse into the life …

Motivated Breast Cancer Screening Behavior And Its Cultural Antecedents, Patricia M. Flynn Mar 2005

Motivated Breast Cancer Screening Behavior And Its Cultural Antecedents, Patricia M. Flynn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Discrepancies in breast cancer screening behavior exist among various ethnic groups in the United States (Jacobs & Lauderdale, 2001), with Latino American women reporting particularly low screening rates in comparison to Anglo American women (ACS, 2002). Research indicates that behavior is in part influenced by aspects of culture and relevant psychological processes (Betancourt & Lopez, 1993; Betancourt & Fuentes, 2001). This study was designed to investigate the relations among cultural values, attributions regarding the causes for not screening, related emotions, expectancy that screening leads to early detection and value incentive of early detection as determinants of breast cancer screening intention …

Attributional Styles Of Women Who Quit Or Reduce Smoking In The Antepartum, Patricia T. Alpert Mar 2005

Attributional Styles Of Women Who Quit Or Reduce Smoking In The Antepartum, Patricia T. Alpert

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Researchers in the field of smoking have sought to identify variables that predict whether or not pregnant smokers stop or continue to smoke. Most variables examined are demographic in nature and little is known about psychological variables associated with those who quit or reduce smoking while pregnant.

Purpose: To analyze attributional style and locus of control to determine which factors alone, or in combination, are associated with quitting versus reduced smoking among pregnant smokers.

Methodology: Pregnant smokers who quit (n = 66) or reduced their smoking (n = 43) were identified by the nursing staff at a women’s county …

Is Capital Punishment Morally Required? The Relevance Of Life-Life Tradeoffs, Cass R. Sunstein, Adrian Vermeule Mar 2005

Is Capital Punishment Morally Required? The Relevance Of Life-Life Tradeoffs, Cass R. Sunstein, Adrian Vermeule

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Recent evidence suggests that capital punishment may have a significant deterrent effect, preventing as many eighteen or more murders for each execution. This evidence greatly unsettles moral objections to the death penalty, because it suggests that a refusal to impose that penalty condemns numerous innocent people to death. Capital punishment thus presents a life-life tradeoff, and a serious commitment to the sanctity of human life may well compel, rather than forbid, that form of punishment. Moral objections to the death penalty frequently depend on a distinction between acts and omissions, but that distinction is misleading in this context, because government …

Effects Of An Impedance Threshold Valve Upon Hemodynamics In Standard Cpr: Studies In A Refined Computational Model, Charles F. Babbs Mar 2005

Effects Of An Impedance Threshold Valve Upon Hemodynamics In Standard Cpr: Studies In A Refined Computational Model, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

An impedance threshold valve (ITV) is a new airway adjunct for resuscitation that permits generation of a small vacuum in the chest during the recoil phase of chest compression. Objectives: To explore in detail the expected magnitude and the hemodynamic mechanisms of circulatory augmentation by an ITV in standard CPR. Method: A 14-compartment mathematical model of the human cardiopulmonary system—upgraded to include applied chest compression force, elastic recoil of the chest wall, anatomic details of the heart and lungs, and the biomechanics of mediastinal compression—is exercised to explore the conditions required for circulatory augmentation by an ITV during various modes …

Evaluation Of Attractants For Live-Trapping Nine-Banded Armadillos, Daniel J. Gammons, Michael T. Mengak, L. Mike Conner Mar 2005

Evaluation Of Attractants For Live-Trapping Nine-Banded Armadillos, Daniel J. Gammons, Michael T. Mengak, L. Mike Conner

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In the past 50 years, the range of the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) in the south has been rapidly expanding. As their range expands, armadillos increasingly come into conflict with suburban landowners. When foraging, armadillos often uproot ornamental plants. Their rooting also destroys gardens, lawns, and flower beds. Their burrowing can damage tree roots and building foundations. Most armadillo damage is a result of their feeding habits. Armadillos dig shallow holes, 1- 3 inches deep and 3-5 inches long, as they search for soil invertebrates.

A recent survey of Georgia county extension agents by scientists at the University …

Confirmatory And Quantitative Analysis Of Β-Lactam Antibiotics In Bovine Kidney Tissue By Dispersive Solid-Phase Extraction And Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Clifton K. Fagerquist, Alan R. Lightfield, Steven J. Lehotay Mar 2005

Confirmatory And Quantitative Analysis Of Β-Lactam Antibiotics In Bovine Kidney Tissue By Dispersive Solid-Phase Extraction And Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Clifton K. Fagerquist, Alan R. Lightfield, Steven J. Lehotay

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A simple, rapid, rugged, sensitive, and specific method for the confirmation and quantitation of 10 β-lactam antibiotics in fortified and incurred bovine kidney tissue has been developed. The method uses a simple solvent extraction, dispersive solid-phase extraction (dispersive- SPE) cleanup, and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) for confirmation and quantitation. Dispersive-SPE greatly simplifies and accelerates sample cleanup and improves overall recoveries compared with conventional SPE cleanup. The β-lactam antibiotics tested were as follows: deacetylcephapirin (an antimicrobial metabolite of cephapirin), amoxicillin, desfuroylceftiofur cysteine disulfide (DCCD, an antimicrobial metabolite of ceftiofur), ampicillin, cefazolin, penicillin G, oxacillin, cloxacillin, naficillin, and dicloxacillin. Average recoveries …

Impact Of Reduced Lignin On Plant Fitness, J. F, Pedersen, K. P. Vogel, D. L. Funnell Mar 2005

Impact Of Reduced Lignin On Plant Fitness, J. F, Pedersen, K. P. Vogel, D. L. Funnell

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Lignin content of crop plants has been reduced by traditional plant breeding, natural and induced mutations, and insertion of transgenes. The effects of these genes and associated lower lignin content have been examined in terms of agricultural fitness or with regard to economically harvestable yields of useful plant products, or, in the case of some perennial species, survivability over multiple years. In general, crop yields are depressed by significant reductions in lignin content. Other negative effects observed in plants with lowered lignin contents include lodging and reduction of long-term survival of some perennial species. However, the interactions of genes involved …

The Arachne Myth In Oral And Written Literature, José Manuel Pedrosa Mar 2005

The Arachne Myth In Oral And Written Literature, José Manuel Pedrosa

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "The Arachne Myth in Oral and Written Literature," José Manuel Pedrosa explores the folktale about a person who prides himself being the most intelligent individual and whom the gods punish with a metamorphosis into spider. Pedrosa discusses similar myths in existence in modern oral traditions and in literary works such as the Bible, Ovid's Metamorphoses, the Quran, and García Márquez's masterpiece Cien años de soledad. The universality of the myth is underlined by the existence of a folktale registered among the Bubi people of Equatorial Guinea. Not known about it until the twentieth century, the oral transmission …

The Rhetorics Of Taking Cases: It's Mine V. Let's Share, Susan Ayres Mar 2005

The Rhetorics Of Taking Cases: It's Mine V. Let's Share, Susan Ayres

Faculty Scholarship

Regulatory takings cases originated in 1922 when Justice Holmes, in Pennsylvania Coal Co. v. Mahon, ruled that "while property may be regulated to a certain extent, if a regulation goes too far it will be recognized as a taking." This simple rule has resulted in over eighty years of case law that Carol Rose states has left takings law to "muddle along." While many legal scholars decry the incoherence and inconsistency of takings case law, this article provides a rhetorical analysis that explains the "muddle" as a result of rhetorical tensions between a Sophistic approach ("Let's Share") and an Aristotelian …
