Fisheries Occasional Publication No.15 - A Unit Register For Commercial Fisheries: An Issues Paper, Western Rock Lobster Council, Department Of Fisheries Western Australia
Fisheries Occasional Publications
This paper is designed to encourage stakeholder involvement in a review of the existing Department of Fisheries' Register, and development of a concept for a new Unit 1 Register, under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA). It is not a fisheries management proposal but a proposal dealing with the facilitation of the fishing licence business. Comments are sought from all stakeholders, including commercial fishers, recreational fishers, banks, accountants, lawyers, third party investors and brokers.
The comments gathered through the responses to this 'issues paper' will form the basis for the Unit Register Working Group to develop the concept of …

Radioactive Bioaccumulation In Clams Along The Hanford Reach, Hanford Action Of Oregon, Norm Buske
Hanford Action of Oregon
Public concern drives clean-up of the Hanford Site in eastern Washington state, especially where radioactive groundwater seeps from the site into the river. In September 2004, The RadioActivist Campaign (TRAC) collected riverbed water and Asian clams from six locations along the Hanford Reach:
• Vernita (upstream background location, by a shoreline spring)
• N-Springs (which drain old N-Reactor waste disposal trenches)
• D-Island (sampled upstream of the D- and DR-Reactor discharge pipes)
• F (sampled near a spring below F-Reactor)
• Hanford Townsite (sampled at a spring fed from central Hanford)
• 300 Area (sampled near a spring at “Location …

Influence Of Dietary Oils On Liver And Blood Lipid Peroxidation, Serdar Ergun, Mustafa Yontem, Azmi Yerlikaya, Ahmet Ozata, Kazim Uysal, Hulyam Kurt
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Diets high in unsaturated fatty acids have been recommended to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, these lipids are more susceptible to lipid peroxidation than saturated fatty acids. The aim of the present study described herein was to investigate the effects of dietary oils (differing in their degree of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids) on liver and blood lipid peroxidation in chicks. METHODS: The experiments were conducted at the laboratories of University of Dumlupinar, Kutahya, Turkey and Osmangazi University, Eskisehir, Turkey between November 2002 and December 2003. The animals were randomly divided into 5 groups of 30 and …

"So Now What?" Using The New Science To Design A Flexible And Adaptable Spiritual Growth Process For New And Returning Believers In The Local Church, Christine A. Prescott
Doctor of Ministry
This dissertation addresses the need for spiritual-growth opportunities in the local church for new adult Christians and those adults who are returning to the church after years of absence. This dissertation will identify concepts from the "new science' of quantum mechanics, chaos theory, and complexity theory to suggest elements for the creation of a flexible and adaptable spiritual-growth process.
I use the New Testament to address two assumptions of the thesis: that the spiritual growth of followers of Jesus Christ is a process of spiritual transformation that rests not a one-time conversion event but occurs over a lifetime of dynamic …

Nutrition and Food Science Faculty Research Publications
Objective: We evaluated the effects of calcium pyruvate supplementation during training on body composition and metabolic responses to exercise.
Method: Twenty-three untrained females were matched and assigned to ingest in a double blind and randomized manner either 5 g of calcium pyruvate (PYR) or a placebo (PL) twice daily for 30 d while participating in a supervised exercise program. Prior to and following supplementation, subjects had body composition determined via hydrodensiometry; performed a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test; and performed a 45-min walk test at 70% of pre-training VO2 max in which fasting pre- and post exercise blood samples determined. …
Improving Foreign Language Writing Competence, Carmen Schlig
Improving Foreign Language Writing Competence, Carmen Schlig
Dimensions
Process writing has long been used in English-language composition and English as a Second Language courses, and in recent years it has been adopted in foreign language classes as well. Nevertheless, many teachers and learners still see foreign language writing as an exercise in perfecting grammar and vocabulary. Explicit instruction on the process of insightful writing is unusual in the foreign language classroom. This article presents a study of third-year Spanish courses and addresses (1) whether the different modalities of error correction promote improvement of writing skills and (2) whether students’ awareness of the processes of reading and writing favors …

Epistasis Among Presynaptic Serotonergic System Components, Scott F. Stoltenberg
Epistasis Among Presynaptic Serotonergic System Components, Scott F. Stoltenberg
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Epistatic interactions among regulatory components of the serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmitter system may be an important aspect of 5-HT function. Because 5-HT dysregulation is associated with several common psychiatric disorders, the potential for epistasis among genetic variants in the 5-HT transporter (SERT), 5-HT1B terminal autoreceptor and the 5- HT1A somatodendritic autoreceptor should be examined. In this study, output from a dynamic minimal model of 5-HT function was compared to empirical results in the literature. Parameters representing extracellular 5-HT clearance rates (SERT), 5-HT release levels (5-HT1B) and inhibitory thresholds (the amount of extracellular 5-HT above which cell firing …

Free Exercise And The Problem Of Symmetry, Nelson Tebbe
Free Exercise And The Problem Of Symmetry, Nelson Tebbe
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
This Article identifies a difficulty with the neutrality paradigm that currently shapes thinking about the Free Exercise Clause both on the Supreme Court and among its leading critics. It proposes a liberty component, shows how it would generate more attractive results than neutrality alone, and defends the liberty approach against likely objections.
A controversial neutrality rule currently governs cases brought under the Free Exercise Clause. Under that rule, only laws and policies that have the purpose of discriminating against religion draw heightened scrutiny. All others are presumptively constitutional, regardless of how severely they burden religious practices.
Critics have attacked the …

A Knowledge Matrix Modeling Of The Intelligence Cycle, Kevin J. Whaley
A Knowledge Matrix Modeling Of The Intelligence Cycle, Kevin J. Whaley
Theses and Dissertations
This effort models information flow through the United States Intelligence Community's Intelligence Cycle using a knowledge matrix methodology. The knowledge matrix methodology takes explicit data from multiple sources and fuses that data to measure a current level of knowledge about a target, or situation. Knowledge matrices are used to develop a measure of user-needs satisfaction. User-needs satisfaction compares requested levels of knowledge to a probability of collecting that knowledge within a designated timeframe. This effort expands the work done by Captain Carl Pawling in his March 2004 thesis, Modeling and Simulation of the Military Intelligence Process, by modeling intelligence as …
An Evaluation Of Wind Turbine Technology At Peterson Afb, Randy C. Combs
An Evaluation Of Wind Turbine Technology At Peterson Afb, Randy C. Combs
Theses and Dissertations
Wind energy technology is a viable source for attaining the emission reduction and renewable energy use goals set forth by the executive office. In accordance with Executive Orders, the Air Force must reduce greenhouse emissions and energy consumption, and expand the use of renewable energy sources within its facilities nation-wide by year 2010. This mandate requires that the Air Force look at alternative electrical production and rely more on such renewable energy resources as wind power. The specific problem addressed by this research is whether on-site wind energy generation can be more economically feasible than the conventional energy consumption at …
