Corporate Speech In A Democracy: What Can Nigeria Learn From Abroad?, Ige Omotayo Bolodeoku Apr 2005

Corporate Speech In A Democracy: What Can Nigeria Learn From Abroad?, Ige Omotayo Bolodeoku

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article critiques Nigeria's absolute ban on corporate political activism as unrealistic and counterproductive, advocating for a more nuanced regulatory framework. It proposes allowing corporate political participation with safeguards like disclosure requirements and shareholder involvement, drawing insights from U.S., U.K., and Canadian approaches to balance free expression with corruption prevention.

Regional Geographic Influence On Two Khmer Polities, Chad Raymond Apr 2005

Regional Geographic Influence On Two Khmer Polities, Chad Raymond

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

This paper examines the effects of Cambodian geography in two Khmer polities: Funan, an empire that occupied the southeastern portions of modern-day Cambodia and Vietnam during the early centuries A.D., and Democratic Kampuchea, a Cambodian state that existed from April 17, 1975, until the Vietnamese invasion of December 25, 1978. In the construction of a national identity, a community must possess a tradition of a territory that the community regards as its ancestral home. The tradition of a territory provides a chronological anchor for the supposed authentic and pristine origins of the nation. As demonstrated by myth, propaganda, and policies, …

Effectiveness Of Wavelet Transform, Fractals, Lacunarity And Spatial Indices In Content-Based Image Retrieval, Sivagurunathan Chinniah Apr 2005

Effectiveness Of Wavelet Transform, Fractals, Lacunarity And Spatial Indices In Content-Based Image Retrieval, Sivagurunathan Chinniah

Masters Theses

The thesis demonstrates the feasibility of applying wavelet transforms, fractals, and spatial indices in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) of remotely sensed imagery. It consists of three major parts: the design and development of thick-client CBIR software, population of two samples of SPOT™ and Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) image databases with metadata describing their visual properties, and, exploration of the effectiveness of region quadtree query and retrieval by content using various combinations of indices. 272 SPOT™ and 507 Landsat 7 ETM+ 512 x 512 pixel panchromatic images of Atlanta, Georgia were subsetted from two scenes. Moran's I index …

Executive Style Not Gender: Moving Toward A Clearer View Of The Consequences Of Executive Transition In The Nonprofit Sector, Jane A. Van Buren Apr 2005

Executive Style Not Gender: Moving Toward A Clearer View Of The Consequences Of Executive Transition In The Nonprofit Sector, Jane A. Van Buren

Student Scholarship

The primary purpose of this research is to clarify the operational characteristics in nonprofit organizations and to propose a framework for organizational success. This study aims to conceptualize and disentangle gender, board power and executive style effects and examine the relationship between board power and executive style under the possible scenarios of executive transition. We explore and refine the dimensions of board power and executive style and discuss the usefulness of viewing an organization's orientation as a multidimensional construct. We suggest an alternative model to outcomes of financial performance which includes the interaction of internal and external executive style, and …

Changes In Glial Cell Line Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Nerve Growth Factor Expression With Development, Age, Exercise And Hypertension, Bertha C. Rebimbas-Cohen Apr 2005

Changes In Glial Cell Line Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Nerve Growth Factor Expression With Development, Age, Exercise And Hypertension, Bertha C. Rebimbas-Cohen

Dissertations

Neurotrophic factors are important for neuronal growth, survival, and maintenance of cell phenotype. Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) affects sensory, autonomic and somatic motor neurons and nerve growth factor (NGF) affects sensory and sympathetic neurons. NGF and GDNF are produced by cardiac muscle and have potent effects on sensory and autonomic neuronal innervation of blood vessels. Neural innervation plays a key role in blood vessel function. Since neural innervation of blood vessels may be regulated by growth factors, we wanted to determine what changes would occur to NGF and GDNF levels with maturity, exercise and hypertension.

Changes in GDNF …

Function And Role Of Synaptotagmin Proteins In Yeast, Aaron J. Yang Apr 2005

Function And Role Of Synaptotagmin Proteins In Yeast, Aaron J. Yang

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

In the genome of the budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a family of proteins is encoded that resembles the Ca2+ sensing synaptotagmins present in neuronal cells of higher eukaryotes. The synaptotagmins couple a rise in cytosolic Ca2+ with synaptic vesicle formation and release during the process of vesicular trafficking and exocytosis. This process is important in higher organisms for neurotransmitter release and signal transmission. At least a dozen synaptotagmin isoforms exist, some that are expressed outside the nervous system, suggesting that the synaptotagmin proteins might regulate membrane trafficking in a variety of different cell types. The synaptotagmin proteins in higher …

The Effects Of Local Grassland Habitat And Surrounding Landscape Composition On The Predators Of Grassland Bird Nests., Page Klug Apr 2005

The Effects Of Local Grassland Habitat And Surrounding Landscape Composition On The Predators Of Grassland Bird Nests., Page Klug

Student Work

In agroecosystems birds use fragmented grasslands which are saturated by numerous nest predators. Multiple predator threats should increase nest predation, but predator interactions complicate relationships. I studied nest predators of Dickcissels (Spiza americana), a bird of conservation concern. I asked: (1) Does predator community explain predators documented on video? (2) What predator community best explains nesting success? (3) How does the predator community respond to habitat at multiple levels?

Up In Smoke: Using Cooperative U.S. Forest Fire Management Policies As A Model For Implementing An Effective Forest Fire Prevention Program In The Russian Far East, Jim Wilkson Apr 2005

Up In Smoke: Using Cooperative U.S. Forest Fire Management Policies As A Model For Implementing An Effective Forest Fire Prevention Program In The Russian Far East, Jim Wilkson

Washington International Law Journal

The Russian Far East's ("RFE") most abundant natural resource is its vast, relatively unbroken tracts of boreal forest. Wildfires are the largest cause of deforestation in the RFE. Rampant fires in the RFE threaten biodiversity and wildlife habitat, destroy timber reserves, and create pollution and greenhouse gases. Experts estimate that between eighty to ninety percent of these fires are human-caused. However, Russian forestry laws fail to provide the type of legal framework necessary to adequately address these preventable fires. Forest management legislation mandating more comprehensive and cooperative fire prevention could prevent disastrous forest fires in the RFE. U.S. fire management …

Insertional Polymorphisms Of Endogenous Feline Leukemia Viruses, Alfred L. Roca, William G. Nash, Joan C. Menninger, William J. Murphy, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

The number, chromosomal distribution, and insertional polymorphisms of endogenous feline leukemia viruses (enFeLVs) were determined in four domestic cats (Burmese, Egyptian Mau, Persian, and nonbreed) using fluorescent in situ hybridization and radiation hybrid mapping. Twenty-nine distinct enFeLV loci were detected across 12 of the 18 autosomes. Each cat carried enFeLV at only 9 to 16 of the loci, and many loci were heterozygous for presence of the provirus. Thus, an average of 19 autosomal copies of enFeLV were present per cat diploid genome. Only five of the autosomal enFeLV sites were present in all four cats, and at only one …

Because We Smile: Jonathan Swift's Enthusiastic Magnifying Glass, Jared Timothy Mink Apr 2005

Because We Smile: Jonathan Swift's Enthusiastic Magnifying Glass, Jared Timothy Mink

Senior Honors Theses

Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was intellectually before his time. His insights into the human condition reveal a belief in the not-hopeless corruption of humanity. To capture this state of the human condition, he used two key symbols: wind and machine. These two symbols represent the two sides of the dialectical argument into which Swift forces his readers. What guide should direct humanity-enthusiasm and emotional stimulation (wind) or reason and "objective" systems (the machine)? Preoccupied with these two ideas, Swift uses his scatological satires to level all of humanity. Swift forces his readers onto their knees in the mud and mire and …

Meaningful Learning: Reconciling The Tensions Between Constructivist And Environmentally Sustainable Pedagogy, Nancy Van Kannel-Ray Apr 2005

Meaningful Learning: Reconciling The Tensions Between Constructivist And Environmentally Sustainable Pedagogy, Nancy Van Kannel-Ray

Dissertations

Critics of constructivism argue, in many ways correctly, that this approach to education is culturally and environmentally damaging because constructivism may not develop an understanding of the interdependence between the human community and the world in which people live. Advocates for environmentally sustainable pedagogy argue the importance of understanding patterns of thinking that allow communities to live sustainably. The purpose of this study is to resolve the tensions between the two pedagogical frameworks: constructivism and environmental sustainability.

The tensions are resolved in two ways. First, there are forms of constructivism that align in viable ways with the criteria critics argue …

Treasuring Identity : Subject-Object Relations In Beowulf, Becky Workman Apr 2005

Treasuring Identity : Subject-Object Relations In Beowulf, Becky Workman

Honors Theses

Beowulfs introspection leads him to seek glory and wealth to preserve his memory after death. Unlike the battles against Grendel and Grendel's mother, Beowulfs actions against the dragon clearly prioritize the winning of treasure over the safety of the people. Beowulf seems to believe that revenge upon the dragon is a justification for risking not only his life, but the stability of the leadership of his nation. The hoard that he wins illustrates how material objects are not necessarily longer lasting or more stable than mortals. Treasure's intimate connection with the human body in the social structure of the community …

Harmful Garden Plants In Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia Apr 2005

Harmful Garden Plants In Western Australia, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

Many garden plants can cause harm. Some are commercially available and very popular; others are no longer readily available but still exist in older gardens; and yet others are favourite indoor ornamentals, cut-flowers, weeds, or even fruit and vegetables that we consume frequently, often without realising that other parts of those same plants are harmful.

It is impractical and unnecessary to remove from our gardens every single plant that could conceivably be harmful. A more sensible approach is to be aware of the potential danger of a particular plant, and then assess how much or how little risk it poses …

Producing Pulses In The Southern Agricultural Region, Peter White, Mark Seymour, Pam Burgess, Martin Harries

Bulletins 4000 -

The development of pulses in Western Australia has undergone tremendous advances over the past 12 years. From a tiny industry in the early 1990’s where the knowledge of both scientists and farmers was very limited, we now have a robust industry with production packages and improved varieties for all the grain legumes species that are well suited to our environment.

This book, which is both comprehensive and practical, collates much of the information gathered through pulse research and commercial experience over the past 10 years and will be valuable to all pulse growers, agronomists, students and industry advisors alike. The …

The Performative Letter, From Medieval To Modern, Michael Heyman

Faculty Works

Sometimes letters seem to behave badly. They can be eaten, in alphabet soup and Alphabits™ cereal; they can build structures unrelated to letters, with wooden alphabet blocks; they can be a physical impediment or challenge, as with the alphabet superhero "Letterman" on The Electric Company who, in Superman-style, used to leap a capital T and run "faster than a rolling O"; they can even become abstract art, as in the urban institution of "tagging," or signing a name in outlandish, highly stylized and often-unrecognizable graffiti letters. While these functions of letters may seem counter to what might be taught in …

Increased Action Potential Firing Rates Of Layer 2/3 Pyramidal Cells In The Prefrontal Cortex Are Significantly Related To Cognitive Performance In Aged Monkeys, Yu Ming Chang, Douglas L. Rosene, Ronald J. Killiany, Lisa A. Mangiamele, Jennifer I. Luebke

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The neurobiological substrates of significant age-related deficits in higher cognitive abilities mediated by the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are unknown. To address this issue, whole-cell current-clamp recordings were used to compare the intrinsic membrane and action potential (AP) firing properties of layer 2/3 pyramidal cells in PFC slices from young and aged behaviorally characterized rhesus monkeys. Most aged subjects demonstrated impaired performance in Delayed Non-Match to Sample (DNMS) task acquisition, DNMS 2 min delay and the Delayed Recognition Span task. Resting membrane potential and membrane time constant did not differ in aged relative to young cells, but input resistance was significantly …

Big Bluestem Pasture In The Great Plains: An Alternative For Dryland Corn, Kenneth P. Vogel, Gary E. Varvel, Robert B. Mitchell, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Richard T. Clark, Bruce Anderson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Big bluestem pasture can earn more than twice as much per acre as dryland corn.

Corn production and perennial grass pastures provide the foundation for the agricultural industry in the central and eastern Great Plains. Typically, many producers grow both corn and perennial grass pastures to meet livestock feed demands and to diversify the operation. For example, corn was produced on more than 37% of the total cropland, and perennial pasture comprised 49% of the land in farms in Nebraska.1 Corn was produced on an average of 7.8 million acres in Nebraska from 2000 to 2002, with 40% being dryland …

Identification And Expansion Of Pancreatic Stem/Progenitor Cells., You-Qing Zhang, Marcie Kritzik, Nora Sarvetnick Apr 2005

Identification And Expansion Of Pancreatic Stem/Progenitor Cells., You-Qing Zhang, Marcie Kritzik, Nora Sarvetnick

Journal Articles: Regenerative Medicine

Pancreatic islet transplantation represents an attractive approach for the treatment of diabetes. However, the limited availability of donor islets has largely hampered this approach. In this respect, the use of alternative sources of islets such as the ex vivo expansion and differentiation of functional endocrine cells for treating diabetes has become the major focus of diabetes research. Adult pancreatic stem cells /progenitor cells have yet to be recognized because limited markers exist for their identification. While the pancreas has the capacity to regenerate under certain circumstances, questions where adult pancreatic stem/progenitor cells are localized, how they are regulated, and even …

The Discourse Of Law In Time Of War: Politics And Professionalism During The Civil War And Reconstruction, Norman W. Spaulding Apr 2005

The Discourse Of Law In Time Of War: Politics And Professionalism During The Civil War And Reconstruction, Norman W. Spaulding

William & Mary Law Review

This Article assesses the role of law and lawyering in time of war by examining how lawyers responded to and were affected by the Civil War and Reconstruction. Although the modern legal profession has its roots in the same time period (legal formalism, education in law schools rather than apprenticeships, Socratic instruction, bar associations, large firm practice, and a distinct brand of constitutional conservatism all emerge in the 1870s), historians of the legal profession have largely ignored the relationship between professional organization and lawyers' experience of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Before the war period, many elite lawyers were committed …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 12 - Mitigation Of The Negative Impacts On Biodiversity And Fisheries Values Of The Refurbishment Of Waroona Dam, South-Western Australia (Final Report For The Water Corporation Of Western Australia), Brett Molony, Stephen Beatty, Chris Bird, Vinh Nguyen Apr 2005

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 12 - Mitigation Of The Negative Impacts On Biodiversity And Fisheries Values Of The Refurbishment Of Waroona Dam, South-Western Australia (Final Report For The Water Corporation Of Western Australia), Brett Molony, Stephen Beatty, Chris Bird, Vinh Nguyen

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

In addition to the supply of water for agriculture, irrigation dams of south-western Australia are important systems for recreational activities, including fishing (Molony & Bird 2002, Molony et al. 2002a). Lake Navarino (the reservoir created by Waroona Dam, figures 1 and 2, approx. 115° 55 E 32° 51 S) is the first major public access reservoir south of the Perth Metropolitan Area and is an important component of the Recreational Marron (Cherax tenuimanus') Fishery (RMF) (Molony 2001a, 2002a, 2003a, Molony & Bird 2002, Beatty et al. 2003a). Further, it is the most northerly irrigation dam that is regularly stocked with …
