Global Biomass Variation And Its Geodynamic Effects, 1982-1998, M. Rodell, B. F. Chao, A. Y. Au, John S. Kimball, K. C. Mcdonald Apr 2005

Global Biomass Variation And Its Geodynamic Effects, 1982-1998, M. Rodell, B. F. Chao, A. Y. Au, John S. Kimball, K. C. Mcdonald

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

Redistribution of mass near Earth’s surface alters its rotation, gravity field, and geocenter location. Advanced techniques for measuring these geodetic variations now exist, but the ability to attribute the observed modes to individual Earth system processes has been hampered by a shortage of reliable global data on such processes, especially hydrospheric processes. To address one aspect of this deficiency, 17 yr of monthly, global maps of vegetation biomass were produced by applying field-based relationships to satellite-derived vegetation type and leaf area index. The seasonal variability of biomass was estimated to be as large as 5 kg m−2. Of …

The Effectiveness Of The Endangered Species Act: A Quantitative Analysis, Martin F.J. Taylor, Kieran F. Suckling, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski Apr 2005

The Effectiveness Of The Endangered Species Act: A Quantitative Analysis, Martin F.J. Taylor, Kieran F. Suckling, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Population trends for 1095 species listed as threatened and endangered under the Endangered Species Act were correlated with the length of time the species were listed and the presence or absence of critical habitat and recovery plans. Species with critical habitat for two or more years were more than twice as likely to have an improving population trend in the late 1990s, and less than half as likely to be declining in the early 1990s, as species without. Species with dedicated recovery plans for two or more years were significantly more likely to be improving and less likely to be …

Sting Operations, Undercover Agents, And Entrapment, Bruce Hay Apr 2005

Sting Operations, Undercover Agents, And Entrapment, Bruce Hay

Missouri Law Review

This Article focuses on two distinct functions of sting operations. One is the informational, or investigatory, function of identifying individuals who are engaged in (or likely to engage in) criminal activity. The second is the behavioral function of deterring individuals from engaging in (independent) criminal activity: the threat of being caught in a sting may scare individuals away from genuine criminal opportunities that would otherwise seem appealing. Though complementary in some respects, these functions are also in some tension with each other. A sting operation that does not serve informational purposes may be good for deterrent purposes, and vice versa. …

American Prisoners Of War In Vietnam Tell Their Stories, Ryan Frost Apr 2005

American Prisoners Of War In Vietnam Tell Their Stories, Ryan Frost

Honors Theses

This paper seeks to examine the experiences of Vietnam POWs, both those held in thejungles of South Vietnam and those in the Hanoi prison camps of North Vietnam based on POW narratives consisting of memoirs, autobiographies, and interviews. Early POW history depicts great differences between the two groups of POWs, giving the impression that Pilot POWS, who comprised the majority of prisoners in Hanoi camps, acted more honorably while interned in comparison to enlisted army POWS, who spent the majority of their captivity in the jungles of South Vietnam. This paper demonstrates the similarities in their experiences through these narrative …

From Opposing Sides : The Duality Of Citizens' And Their Government's Views On Town Squares, Zachary Powell Apr 2005

From Opposing Sides : The Duality Of Citizens' And Their Government's Views On Town Squares, Zachary Powell

Honors Theses

The purpose of my paper is to explore how the State's and the people's views concerning town squares come together. I will focus mainly on the duality between these two views: one the one hand, the State uses these spaces to display its power and for physical security. On the other side, the populace sees these spaces as theirs, as central to their community as citizens. Furthermore, they see it as a place to confront their government. Where else would be better than the place where the government seems to take on physical form?

I will explore this duality in …

Reading In The Future: Literacy And The Time Of The Internet, David R. Cole Apr 2005

Reading In The Future: Literacy And The Time Of The Internet, David R. Cole

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

David R. Cole's Reading in the Future: Literacy and the Time of the Internet locates the literacies of the internet -- itself read as the end game of western technology or the Machina Mundi, the Great Chain of the World that has a centre that is everywhere and a circumference that is nowhere -- in a contradictory space. But Cole also self-consciously locates his own writing at a moment in time when the initial technological hype of the internet is subsiding in the face of the boredom of informational overload and the internet is emerging as both an unlimited …

State Responsibility And The High Seas Marine Environment: A Legal Theory For The Protection Of Seamounts In The Global Commons, Gregory D. Pendleton Apr 2005

State Responsibility And The High Seas Marine Environment: A Legal Theory For The Protection Of Seamounts In The Global Commons, Gregory D. Pendleton

Washington International Law Journal

At its latest session, the United Nations General Assembly urged States to consider a temporary ban on bottom trawling on the high seas. Bottom trawling technology causes extensive damage both to the habitat of deep sea living marine resources ("LMRs") and to the LMRs themselves. This damage is particularly acute at heavily fished undersea mountains known as seamounts. The pronouncement by the General Assembly, while certainly a positive step, is another unfortunate example of short-sighted fisheries management: instead of creating a legitimate protection regime—such as a moratorium or a system of High Seas Marine Protected Areas ("HSMPA")—for these rare and …

Physical Properties Of Yogurt Fortified With Various Commercial Whey Protein Concentrates, Isabelle Sodini, John Montella, Phillip S. Tong Apr 2005

Physical Properties Of Yogurt Fortified With Various Commercial Whey Protein Concentrates, Isabelle Sodini, John Montella, Phillip S. Tong

Dairy Science

The effects of whey protein concentrates on physical and rheological properties of yogurt were studied. Five commercial whey protein concentrates (340 g kg−1 protein nominal) were used to fortify milk to 45 g protein kg−1. Fermentation was performed with two different starters (ropy and non-ropy). Resulting yogurts were compared with a control yogurt enriched with skim milk powder. The water-holding capacity of the yogurt fortified with skim milk powder was 500 g kg−1 and ranged from 600 to 638 g kg−1 when fortified with whey protein concentrates. Significant rheological differences have been noticed between the …

After El-Shifa: The Extraterritorial Availability Of The Takings Clause, Nathaniel Segal Apr 2005

After El-Shifa: The Extraterritorial Availability Of The Takings Clause, Nathaniel Segal

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines the extraterritorial application of the Fifth Amendment's Takings Clause to foreign nationals, focusing on the case of El-Shifa Pharmaceutical Industries Co. v. U.S.. It argues that the Takings Clause should apply to alien-owned property abroad, emphasizing natural rights theory and the influence of John Locke on U.S. constitutional law. The analysis critiques the U.S. Court of Federal Claims' dismissal of Salah Idris's claim, which denied compensation for the destruction of his pharmaceutical plant in Sudan during a U.S. military strike. The author advocates for extending the clause's protections to foreign property owners, aligning U.S. law with …

Criminology As Lovemaking An Africa Centered, Biko Agozino Apr 2005

Criminology As Lovemaking An Africa Centered, Biko Agozino

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

This paper explores the potential role of love in criminal justice and jurisprudence by excavating ancient and modern philosophies of justice to reveal the puzzling evasion of love in attempts by various philosophical traditions to engineer a solution to the wobbly foundations of justice exclusively on the quicksand of rationality, authority and truth but without love. The paper will adopt the format of Platonian philosophical dialogue (originally borrowed from Africa) by staging a breaking of bread between Jens A.B. Jacobsen (JJ), a business man who died seeking universal justice through nature rather than through love and Ifi Amadiume (IA), the …

The Three-Contingency Model Of Self-Management, Holly C. Harrison Apr 2005

The Three-Contingency Model Of Self-Management, Holly C. Harrison

Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to evaluate people's needs for self-management and the effectiveness of their use of the three-contingency model of self-management. This model prescribes a set of self-management procedures that can be applied to self-manage virtually any behavior. College students used these procedures to manage their own behavior as part of an extended psychology-course assignment.

This evaluation began with the Procrastination Survey, the results of which assessed the frequency of the students' self-management problems. The self-management interventions of up to 168 students were then evaluated using their self-reported performance data and an anonymous survey. The performance data …

Drought And Stocking Rate Effects On Forage Yield From Western South Dakota Rangelands, Alexander J. Smart, Barry H. Dunn Apr 2005

Drought And Stocking Rate Effects On Forage Yield From Western South Dakota Rangelands, Alexander J. Smart, Barry H. Dunn

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The vegetation of rangelands in a large portion of western South Dakota is an overstory of cool-season grasses such as western wheatgrass and green needlegrass and an understory of warm-season grasses such as blue grama and buffalograss (Fig 1). In semi-arid environments, precipitation is the main factor that determines forage production. Many western South Dakota counties receive less than 17 inches of annual rainfall, with 75% occurring between April and October. Pastures are usually managed as large units (more than 160 acres) because fencing and water developments are costly. Regrowth is usually limited to the spring, and 90% of forage …

The Federal Appellate Court Appointments Conundrum, Carl Tobias Apr 2005

The Federal Appellate Court Appointments Conundrum, Carl Tobias

Utah Law Review

Protracted federal appeals court vacancies threaten the delivery of appellate justice in the twenty-first century. The situation comprises a longstanding difficulty and a present complication, which is essentially political. President Bush, as well as GOP and Democratic senators, should institute concerted efforts to depoliticize and expedite the modem judicial selection process. They might discontinue-or at least should minimizecriticism of each other, reconcile partisan disagreements, and solve or ameliorate the contemporary appointments dilemma. Upper-echelon legal officials, including Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and White House Counsel Harriet Miers, the Republican and Democratic Senate leadership, and Judiciary Committee members could assume responsibility for …

Bufadienolides In The Chemical Defenses Of The Toads, Bufo Americanus And Bufo Fowleri, Catherine E. Merovich Apr 2005

Bufadienolides In The Chemical Defenses Of The Toads, Bufo Americanus And Bufo Fowleri, Catherine E. Merovich

Dissertations

I investigated the steroidal chemical defenses (bufadienolides) of Bufo americanus and Bufo fowleri. By the nature of their complex, biphasic life cycles, toads, like other amphibians are important components of aquatic and terrestrial habitats and are prey to numerous invertebrates and vertebrates. Bufadienolides are presumed to be important anti-predatory compounds although much of their chemical ecology is poorly understood. I investigated (1) ontogenetic variation in bufadienolides, (2) bufadienolides from adult parotoid secretion, (3) effectiveness of bufadienolides against a terrestrial predator, and (4) effectiveness of bufadienolides against an aquatic predator. I hypothesized that B. americanuswould have a more extensive …

Brown Meets Green: The Political Fecology Of Poopreport.Com, Marisol Cortez Apr 2005

Brown Meets Green: The Political Fecology Of Poopreport.Com, Marisol Cortez

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In engaging with the culture of filth, Marisol Cortez's Brown Meets Green: The Political Fecology of PoopReport.com questions contemporary cultural criticism's emphasis on shit's textual ambivalence. In order to avoid relapsing into either the Bakhtinian celebration of the grotesque or the too narrowly conceived Kristevan category of the abject, Cortez argues, and to find a way out of this theoretical dualism, one must rethink the very categories of filth and waste through an ecocritical reading of the scatological -- the meeting of brown and green -- performed at the confluence of ecology, cultural studies, and Marxist political economy. This perspective …

Nothing's Gonna Give? Age, Gender, And Cultures Of The Screen, Christine Scodari, Becky Mulvaney Apr 2005

Nothing's Gonna Give? Age, Gender, And Cultures Of The Screen, Christine Scodari, Becky Mulvaney

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Christine Scodari's and Becky Mulvaney's Nothing's Gonna Give? Age, Gender, and Cultures of the Screen investigates the 2003 romantic comedy Something's Gotta Give, written and directed by Nancy Meyers as exceptional in its featuring a fifty-something woman as leading actress. Beginning with an analysis of the filmic text itself, the authors do not confine themselves to it, but go on to critically engage with its reception in both the press and academia. While the focus is thus shifted from the film to the meta- and para-texts produced in the course of its reception and promotion, the underlying questions asked …
