Litigating Same-Sex Marriage: Might The Courts Actually Be Bastions Of Rationality?, Evan Gerstmann Apr 2005

Litigating Same-Sex Marriage: Might The Courts Actually Be Bastions Of Rationality?, Evan Gerstmann

Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works

The great political philosopher John Stuart Mill once asked, “Was there any domination which did not appear natural to those that possessed it?” (Mill 1984, 269–270). For same-sex couples seeking access to the institution of marriage, the public sense that marriage is naturally and obviously meant only for opposite-sex couples has been a formidable barrier. The first state supreme courts to rule on same-sex marriage, in the early 1970s, simply relied upon dictionary definitions to hold that marriage was obviously a heterosexual institution.1 Politicians mostly ignored the issue altogether until the courts of Hawaii, Vermont, and Massachusetts forced public …

Mechanisms Of Cell Death Initiated In Herpes Simplex Virus Thymidine Kinase Expressing Colon Tumor Cells Treated With Ganciclovir And Ucn-01, Christina Elizabeth Ahn Apr 2005

Mechanisms Of Cell Death Initiated In Herpes Simplex Virus Thymidine Kinase Expressing Colon Tumor Cells Treated With Ganciclovir And Ucn-01, Christina Elizabeth Ahn

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Metastatic colon carcinoma is the second leading cause of death from malignancy in the United States, and development of more effective treatments is essential. Heterologous expression of Herpes Simplex Virus Thymidine Kinase (HSVtk) in combination with the prodrug, ganciclovir (GCV), has shown great promise for the genetic therapy of many cancers, but most patients have had only a partial or minimal response to the therapy. After screening a panel of two drug combinations, our laboratory has shown that the combination of GCV and the protein kinase inhibitor UCN-01 (7-hydroxystaurosporine) enhances tumor cell death more effectively than either drug alone. However …

Defensin In The Ticks Dermacentor Variabilis And Ixodes Scapularis, Shane Michael Ceraul Apr 2005

Defensin In The Ticks Dermacentor Variabilis And Ixodes Scapularis, Shane Michael Ceraul

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

This dissertation presents the identification, molecular structure and expression of defensin, an antimicrobial peptide, in the ticks, Dermacentor variabilis and Ixodes scapularis. A 624 bp cDNA molecule for defensin was cloned and sequenced from hemocytes, fat body and midgut of unstimulated D. variabilis ticks. Defensin peptide was detected only in the hemocyte lysates. These results suggest that the defensin from D. variabilis is synthesized and stored in the hemocytes, although the role of other tissues is not excluded.

The ability of the juvenile stage ticks to express the defensin gene was confirmed. Detection of the defensin transcript in all …

Penicillin-Binding Proteins In The Pathogenic Intestinal Spirochete Brachyspira Pilosicoli, Rohana P. Dassanayake, Gautam Sarath, Gerald E. Duhamel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) of slightly different molecular masses (94, 62 or 68, 42 or 50, 25, and 22 kDa) were identified in one human and two porcine Brachyspira pilosicoli strains. Identification of PBPs of B. pilosicoli provides a basis for characterization of the genes encoding these proteins among pathogenic intestinal spirochetes of humans and animals.

Seismic Signals Are Crucial For Male Mating Success In A Visual Specialist Jumping Spider (Araneae: Salticidae), Damian O. Elias, Eileen Hebets, Ronald R. Hoy, Andrew C. Mason

Eileen Hebets Publications

The diversity of courtship displays throughout the animal kingdom is immense and displays can range from seemingly simple, to incredibly complex. Signalers often possess elaborate morphological adaptations for signals directed at a specific sensory modality in receivers. In some cases, these signals are so compelling to human observers, the possibility that important signals exist in other sensory modalities is ignored, potentially resulting in an incomplete characterization of the communication system. Jumping spiders (Salticidae) have remarkable visual capabilities. Yet one species, Habronattus dossenus, has recently been shown to have a complex repertoire of multicomponent seismic courtship signals in addition to …

Helicobacter Pylori. Basics And Clinical Overview, Mohammed S. Al-Marhoon, Roger W. Soames

Saudi Medical Journal

The discovery of Helicobacter pylori H. pylori has greatly changed the approach to the management of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. A sound knowledge of the basics of H. pylori is an important aid in the diagnosis and treatment of clinical conditions associated with this infection. Gastric carcinoma is estimated to be the world9s second most common cancer as a cause of death. It is hoped that gastric cancer can be prevented by H. pylori eradication; however, this issue is still under investigation. Active research is ongoing to highlight the mechanisms by which H. pylori leads to severe gastric …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A new species of Parahadjelia occurs in the Muscovy duck, Cairina moschata (Linnaeus, 1758), from the Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The new species differs from Parhadjelia neglecta Lent and Freitas, 1939, in the body size, in the spicules shape and ratio of spicules, and in having two pairs of sessile papillae near the tail tip of the male. The characters exhibited by P. neglecta and the new species validate its generic status distinct from Hadjelia.

Use Of Tracers And Isotopes To Evaluate Vulnerability Of Water In Domestic Wells To Septic Waste, Ingrid M. Verstraeten, Gregory S. Fetterman, Michael T. Meyer, Thomas D. Bullen, Sonja Sebree

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

In Nebraska, a large number (>200) of shallow sand-point and cased wells completed in coarse alluvial sediments along rivers and lakes still are used to obtain drinking water for human consumption, even though construction of sand-point wells for consumptive uses has been banned since 1987. The quality of water from shallow domestic wells potentially vulnerable to seepage from septic systems was evaluated by analyzing for the presence of tracers and multiple isotopes. Samples were collected from 26 sand-point and perforated, cased domestic wells and were analyzed for bacteria, coliphages, nitrogen species, nitrogen and boron isotopes, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), …

The Davis Creek watershed is the most polluted tributaries of Kalamazoo River in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. This study applied continuous simulation AnnAGNPS model, developed by USDA ARS, to estimate sediment yield and nutrient loadings and simulate the effects of proposed land use scenarios on nonpoint source pollution in the Davis Creek Watershed. Daily climate data of 1998 to 2004, Digital Elevation Model, soil, land use, hydrography, and agricultural management information were used to derive the model input parameters. The model was run continuously for the period of 1998 through 2004. The simulated results showed that erosion and sediment loadings are …

Effect Of Antioxidants On Cadmium Induced Oxidative Stress And Signal Transduction, Deepti Goel Apr 2005

Effect Of Antioxidants On Cadmium Induced Oxidative Stress And Signal Transduction, Deepti Goel

Masters Theses

A study was done to establish if reactive oxygen species (ROS) participate in the signal transduction pathway through which cadmium induces gene transcription. Cadmium has become a concern in the health care community in the past few years as evidence suggests that cadmium can induce the development of tumors, influence cell signaling and cause damage to organs, tissue, cells and DNA. The mechanism by which cadmium exerts its action on cellular processes or induces toxicity is however unclear although there is evidence to suggest that ROS play a role. Our laboratory is interested in understanding the mechanisms of differentially regulated …

Saint Vincent And Poland, Maria Swiatecka Apr 2005

Saint Vincent And Poland, Maria Swiatecka

Vincentian Studies

Poland was the first country to receive Vincentian missionaries and Daughters of Charity. Vincent de Paul oversaw the mission’s planning. He was greatly concerned with its success and provided spiritual and material help to Poland during the Swedish invasion, which began in 1655. The Congregation’s and the Daughters’ excellent relationship with Queen Louise-Marie of Poland is described at length. Those who served are profiled. The Vincentians preached parish missions to the peasants, founded a house, and established a seminary because Vincent and the queen saw the reform of Polish clergy as an urgent need. The Vincentians and the Daughters nursed …

Expert Testimony On Sexually Abused Child Syndrome In A Child Protective Proceeding: More Hurtful Than Helpful, Mary Ellen Reilly Apr 2005

Expert Testimony On Sexually Abused Child Syndrome In A Child Protective Proceeding: More Hurtful Than Helpful, Mary Ellen Reilly

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The note argues that Sexually Abused Child Syndrome (SACS) testimony is unreliable and should not be admitted as corroborating evidence in child protective proceedings. It contends that SACS lacks scientific validity, is not recognized as a medical diagnosis, and fails to meet evidentiary standards for reliability. The author asserts that allowing SACS testimony violates due process rights and risks wrongful outcomes, advocating for stricter standards for expert testimony and alternative methods of substantiating abuse allegations.

Enhancing Patent Disclosure For Faithful Claim Construction, Joe Miller Apr 2005

Enhancing Patent Disclosure For Faithful Claim Construction, Joe Miller

Scholarly Works

Claim construction jurisprudence is in disarray. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit reverses trial court claim construction decisions at a worryingly high rate. The proportion of Federal Circuit claim construction opinions that include separate concurrences or dissents continues to grow. And the muddled mix of issues the Federal Circuit framed for en banc review in the Phillips case suggests that the court is having trouble reaching consensus on what the central questions are, much less on how to answer them. Perhaps the path to adequately predictable claim construction is continued tinkering with the analytical constructs internal to …

Waves Of Destruction: The French, Spanish, And Americans Struggle To Dominate The Fur Trade In The Osage Indians Homeland And The Impact On The Tribe, 1673-1873, Heather R. Hess

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The Osage Indians are not often thought of when the fur trade is mentioned. However, this powerful tribe lived near the Missouri River from the beginning of the North American fur trade in the 1600s until its end in the 1840s. They were the tribe that the French, Spanish, and Americans were forced to deal with and appease in order to reach their goal of dominating the fur trade. Each country dealt differently with the tribe. The French adopted a friendly policy of assimilating with the tribe and making them partners in the fur trade business. The Spanish kept many …

African People’S Perceptions Of Malaria And Its Treatments, Stephanie L. Dean Apr 2005

African People’S Perceptions Of Malaria And Its Treatments, Stephanie L. Dean

Senior Honors Theses

The focus of this descriptive, qualitative study was to find how malaria and its treatments are perceived among different peoples of parts of western and northern Africa. The sample consisted of 10 health care workers in western and northern Africa contacted via e-mail, allowing them to document and integrate their findings from experience concerning people’s views of malaria. Many studies are available concerning the efficacy of chloroquine, research of new drugs, vaccines, and ideas to reduce malaria; however, few evaluate and publish the ideas of the people, pertinent in implementing interventions to decrease the transmission of P. falciparum. This study …
