This column was originally published in 2001. A friend who is Louisville born and bred and has lived in Florida for nearly 30 years, about as long as I have, sent me this e-mail less than an hour before this year's Kentucky Derby.

Non-Photorealistic Rendering Of Algorithmically Generated Trees, Nathan C. Dudley, Cindy Grimm May 2005

Non-Photorealistic Rendering Of Algorithmically Generated Trees, Nathan C. Dudley, Cindy Grimm

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This work presents a novel rendering technique inspired by artistic approaches. Instead of trying to recreate the appearance of a traditional medium, such as charcoal or watercolor, this approach is a mixture of both photo-realism and abstraction. Artists use a process of abstraction to provide structural information about subjects that do not have clearly defined shapes, such as groups of leaves in a tree. For example, an artist will first use a color wash to approximate a group of leaves, then add detail on top of parts of this wash to indicate individual leaves. Similarly, we use an abstract shape …

Kinetics Of Exocytosis Is Faster In Cones Than In Rods., Katalin Rabl, Lucia Cadetti, Wallace B. Thoreson

Journal Articles: Ophthalmology

Cone-driven responses of second-order retinal neurons are considerably faster than rod-driven responses. We examined whether differences in the kinetics of synaptic transmitter release from rods and cones may contribute to differences in postsynaptic response kinetics. Exocytosis from rods and cones was triggered by membrane depolarization and monitored in two ways: (1) by measuring EPSCs evoked in second-order neurons by depolarizing steps applied to presynaptic rods or cones during simultaneous paired whole-cell recordings or (2) by direct measurements of exocytotic increases in membrane capacitance. The kinetics of release was assessed by varying the length of the depolarizing test step. Both measures …

The Last Day On Earth: Encoding And Decoding Of Resistant Ideology In Music Video, Desiree Damon May 2005

The Last Day On Earth: Encoding And Decoding Of Resistant Ideology In Music Video, Desiree Damon

Communication Honors Theses

According to Stuart Hall's theory of encoding and decoding, an audience member, based on their individual ideological perspectives, can read media texts in one of three ways: dominant, negotiated, or resistant. Hall's theory, however, also implies that the producer will always encode a dominant or hegemonic message. Given semantically messy texts like music videos, however, producers now have the freedom to either encode a dominant ideology or to resist it. In order for the audience to make sense of a resistant ideology, it must first be relevant to them. Their subject position, which includes personal experiences, as well as familiarity …

Teachers' Perceptions And Curriculum Analysis For A Zoo Education Program, Ronald S. Berger May 2005

Teachers' Perceptions And Curriculum Analysis For A Zoo Education Program, Ronald S. Berger

Theses and Dissertations

Study intent investigated teachers' perceptions of a zoo education program and evaluated modules. Study explored program effectiveness by evaluating teachers' motivation to participate, students' engagement, presenter performance, program effectiveness, and teachers' met expectations. Study explored if program addressed New Jersey and Pennsylvania standards, North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) guidelines, and a lesson plan format. Research investigated teachers' perceptions by questionnaire from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Teachers perceived presenters performed well, students engaged, and integrating curriculum the motivation to participate. Research to evaluate modules was subjective. Modules addressed Science and Social Studies for New Jersey, Science and Technology, …

Communication Responses To Positive Or Neutral Facial Expressions Between The Genders, Kimberly R. Hollingsworth May 2005

Communication Responses To Positive Or Neutral Facial Expressions Between The Genders, Kimberly R. Hollingsworth

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to determine whether or not college students would respond with any communication to a stimulus of nonverbal communication of either eye contact alone or paired with smiling to the same or opposite gender. The characteristics of this study may have implications on how successful nonverbal communication can be.

One-hundred-sixty students, 8 groups within, were randomly stimulated by either a female or male with either a positive or neutral facial expression and their natural responses were recorded. The responses were coded on a Likert scale and analyzed with a 3 way ANOVA.

The data presented …

The Effects Of Subliminal Weapons Effect On Aggressive Behavior In College Level Students, Gary A. Roskoski May 2005

The Effects Of Subliminal Weapons Effect On Aggressive Behavior In College Level Students, Gary A. Roskoski

Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated the difference in displayed aggression in subjects randomly assigned to either a subliminal weapons effect condition or to a controlled condition. 30 students from a small public University in New Jersey signed up for the study to receive credit for their introductory psychology course. The subjects were then randomly assigned to one of the two conditions; the subliminal weapons effect conditioned consisted of a poster of "Scarface" holding a gun pointed toward the subject on the blackboard (the poster had a sign asking that it not be removed by a professor). The controlled condition had no stimuli …

Impact Of The Lack Of Sleep On Academic Performance In College Students, Tammy L. Hampton May 2005

Impact Of The Lack Of Sleep On Academic Performance In College Students, Tammy L. Hampton

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to research the effects that sleep has on a college student's academic performance, measured by the student's self-reported grade point average (GPA), and to examine whether there is a difference between graduate students' and undergraduate students' results. 136 students at Rowan University in southern New Jersey, 61 graduate students and 75 undergraduate students, were asked to complete a short survey on their sleep habits, demographic information, self-reported GPA, and average number of hours of sleep per night that they received. An independent Two-Way ANOVA was then performed to analyze the information indicating the following …

Robust Algorithms For Property Recovery In Motion Modeling, Medical Imaging And Biometrics, Yong Zhang May 2005

Robust Algorithms For Property Recovery In Motion Modeling, Medical Imaging And Biometrics, Yong Zhang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The past two decades has witnessed growing interest in physics based techniques in computer vision, computer graphics and medical imaging. The main advantage of a physical model is its mathematical rigor and physical soundness, which makes it an ideal tool to study complex nonrigid motion. However, since a model based on continuum mechanics is computationally demanding, an idealized framework is often adopted where physical motion parameters are significantly simplified, which inevitably affects the accuracy and reliability of modeling results.

In this study, a new modeling approach is developed that features the reconstruction of actual material properties such as the Young's …

The Geography Of Organic Farming In Minnesota And Wisconsin, Andrew C. Riely May 2005

The Geography Of Organic Farming In Minnesota And Wisconsin, Andrew C. Riely

Geography Honors Projects

In this study, I examine the agricultural geography of Minnesota and Wisconsin and the history of organic farming. I discuss economic and social factors in the spatial distribution of organic farming. Through field work, mapping, statistical analysis, and farmer surveys, I determined that organic farms cluster in southwestern Wisconsin and central Minnesota. Southwestern Wisconsin's hills limit row cropping, making the land available for organics (especially dairy operations.) The local CROPP cooperative is also a stron support. Finally, most organic farmers farm conventionally before switching to organic. Since they tend not to move, the change rarely affects location.
