Luther's Reformation Of Penance, Robin Korsch May 2005

Luther's Reformation Of Penance, Robin Korsch

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

The history of the practice of penance from the early church to the dawn of the Reformation in the Western church is a rich story of continual change. The early church did not have a uniform doctrine and practice of penance and neither did the Western church even after Martin Luther's lifetime. The purpose of this paper is to study and explain the reasoning behind Luther's initial rejection of the Roman Catholic doctrine and practice of penance as found in various writings of Luther up until his 1520 work The Babylonian Captivity of the Church. It is the thesis of …

To Wonder, Wander, And Linger In The World Of Standardized Testing, Randall Wright, Alayne Sullivan May 2005

To Wonder, Wander, And Linger In The World Of Standardized Testing, Randall Wright, Alayne Sullivan

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice

The standards movement began as a nobly-intended effort to establish a core curriculum—a template of knowledge and skills that would guide teaching and learning across the K-12 curriculum. Our attempts to standardize curriculum may have unintended and deleterious side-effect: The atrophying of the mind’s natural tendencies for exploratory play and inherently imaginative dimensions. This paper engages us in a critical remembering of our pedagogical relationships with children. It reminds us of children’s ways of being and asks how we might engage them in a rigorous appreciation of curricular literacies without thwarting their wonderful wanderings. Ultimately, we worry about the place …

Ecstatic Morality And Sexual Politics: A Catholic And Antitotalitarian Theory Of The Body, Graham James Mcaleer May 2005

Ecstatic Morality And Sexual Politics: A Catholic And Antitotalitarian Theory Of The Body, Graham James Mcaleer

Religion

This first book-length treatment of Thomas Aquinas’s theory of the body presents a Catholic understanding of the body and its implications for social and political philosophy. Making a fundamental contribution to antitotalitarian theory, McAleer argues that a sexual politics reliant upon Aquinas’s theory of the body is better (because less violent) than other commonly available theories. He contrasts this theory with those of four other groups of thinkers: the continental tradition represented by Kant, Schopenhauer, Merleau-Ponty, Nancy, Levinas, and Deleuze; feminism, in the work of Donna Haraway; an alternative Catholic theory to be found in Karl Rahner; and the “Radical …

Determination Of The Cyanide Metabolite 2-Aminothiazoline-4-Carboxylic Acid In Urine And Plasma By Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry, Brian A. Logue, Nicholas P. Kirschten, Ilona Petrikovics, Matthew A, Moser, Gary A. Rockwood, Steven I. Baskin May 2005

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The cyanide metabolite 2-aminothiazoline-4-carboxylic acid (ATCA) is a promising biomarker for cyanide exposure because of its stability and the limitations of direct determination of cyanide and more abundant cyanide metabolites. A simple, sensitive, and specific method based on derivatization and subsequent gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis was developed for the identification and quantification of ATCA in synthetic urine and swine plasma. The urine and plasma samples were spiked with an internal standard (ATCA-d2), diluted, and acidified. The resulting solution was subjected to solid phase extraction on a mixed-mode cation exchange column. After elution and evaporation of the solvent, a silylating …

Arts Festivals And The City, Bernadette Quinn May 2005

Arts Festivals And The City, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

There has been a remarkable rise in the number of urban arts festivals in recent decades. The outcomes of cities' engagement with arts festivals, however, remain little understood, particularly in social and cultural terms. This article reviews existing literature on urban festivals and argues that city authorities tend to disregard the social value of festivals and to construe them simply as vehicles of economic generation or as 'quick fix' solutions to city image problems. While such an approach renders certain benefits, it is ultimately quite limiting. If arts festivals are to achieve their undoubted potential in animating communities, celebrating diversity …

Assessment Of Sediment Contamination In Casco Bay, Terry L. Wade, Stephen T. Sweet May 2005

Assessment Of Sediment Contamination In Casco Bay, Terry L. Wade, Stephen T. Sweet

Publications

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Contaminant concentrations of sediment samples collected approximately 10 years apart are compared in an attempt to establish current status of contaminant concentrations in Casco Bay, to determine whether contaminant concentrations are increasing, decreasing or remain unchanged, and to examine any changes in the geographical distribution of contaminants. This process is complicated by the potential of re-suspension of older sediment back to the surface, the non-homogeneity of sediments, low concentrations for some analytes and variability of different analytical methods. In spite of these complications several trends are observed. As expected, most of the contaminants appear to be decreasing in …

This is a “how-to” Guide for citizens, groups, and communities who neighbor U.S. Department of Energy facilities. This Guide is for those who want their own independent information about artificial radioactivity in their surroundings. This Guide follows the story of an actual expedition by an independent Russian scientist to Paducah, KY and to Portsmouth, OH. Step-by-step instructions explain how to use inexpensive equipment to discover radiological conditions of your daily life. Start-up equipment and supplies cost about $1,500.

This research was completed money allocated during Round 5 of the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund (MTA Fund). Clark University …

Mesocortical Dopamine Neurons Operate In Distinct Temporal Domains Using Multimodal Signaling, Antonieta Lavin, Lourdes Nogueira, Christopher C. Lapish, R. Mark Wightman, Paul E. M. Phillips, Jeremy K. Seamans May 2005

Mesocortical Dopamine Neurons Operate In Distinct Temporal Domains Using Multimodal Signaling, Antonieta Lavin, Lourdes Nogueira, Christopher C. Lapish, R. Mark Wightman, Paul E. M. Phillips, Jeremy K. Seamans

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

In vivo extracellular recording studies have traditionally shown that dopamine (DA) transiently inhibits prefrontal cortex (PFC) neurons, yet recent biophysical measurements in vitro indicate that DA enhances the evoked excitability of PFC neurons for prolonged periods. Moreover, although DA neurons apparently encode stimulus salience by transient alterations in firing, the temporal properties of the PFC DA signal associated with various behaviors is often extraordinarily prolonged. The present study used in vivo electrophysiological and electrochemical measures to show that the mesocortical system produces a fast non-DA-mediated postsynaptic response in the PFC that appears to be initiated by glutamate. In contrast, short …

Antarctic Words, Jeff Grant

Word Ways

The Antarctic Dictionary, A Complete Guide to Antarctic English by Bernadette Hince was published by CSIRO Publishing, Australia in 2000. This work has been meticulously researched, with more than 15,000 quotations from about a thousand different sources, giving the reader a unique insight into the language of Antarctica. The world's most isolated continent has spawned some of the most unusual words in the English language. In the space of a mere century, a remarkable vocabulary has evolved to deal with the extraordinary environment and living organisms of the Antarctic. There is even a little humour here and there!

Buried Alive: Hard Science Fiction Since The Golden Age, Bonny Mcdonald May 2005

Buried Alive: Hard Science Fiction Since The Golden Age, Bonny Mcdonald

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A substantial body of science fiction authors, critics and fans appreciate the literary attention the New Wave of the '60s and '70s brought to the genre of science fiction, but regret the seemingly lasting move away from the hard science classics of the '50s and before. They argue that "the hard stuff' is at the very heart of sf and that its future—still on the path set by the New Wave—is ostensibly a dead end. Many important critics along with hundreds of sf fan websites display this fatalistic concern, asking over and over "Is hard science fiction dead?" The answer …

A Comparison Of Intrauterine And Cervical Artificial Insemination Rods On Farrowing Rate And Litter Size In Artificially Mated Sows, Robert Fitzgerald May 2005

A Comparison Of Intrauterine And Cervical Artificial Insemination Rods On Farrowing Rate And Litter Size In Artificially Mated Sows, Robert Fitzgerald

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This experiment compared the effects of two artificial insemination (AI) rods on farrowing rate and number of piglets born per litter. Three hundred eighty-nine sows were allotted into two experimental groups based on parity, body condition, and breed of sire influence of the sows. One hundred ninety-three matings were performed using the experimental intrauterine rod, and one hundred ninety-six matings were performed using the traditional cervical rod as the control. Total number of piglets born per litter was measured after each sow farrowed, and the farrowing rates were calculated at the end of the study. Farrowing rates were 68% and …
