A Comparative Study Of The Perceptions Of Elementary School Administrators, Teachers, And Students Regarding Recess And Free Play In The Public School., Amy Bennett Banner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to recent studies, the number of schools that have severely limited or eliminated recess and free-play opportunities is on the rise across the nation. School officials cite the increasing levels of state and federal pressure to perform on standardized tests as the primary reason for this shift away from the playground. The threat of lawsuits and safety concerns are also listed as factors in this change of policy.

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the perceptions of directors of schools, supervisors, principals, assistant principals, teachers, and students regarding recess and free play in three East …

A Solemn Assembly., John Michael Cline May 2005

A Solemn Assembly., John Michael Cline

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A group of oil paintings completed in partial requirement of my MFA degree is discussed. The paintings are on wood panels and are the result of a combination of old master techniques of under-painting and glazing and more contemporary approaches to the painting process. Each painting represents a particular concept or event from Mormon theology; whereas, the pictorial structure is inspired by Medieval manuscript painting. Thus, this body of work is a synthesis between two worldviews existing centuries apart, yet sharing certain core values and beliefs.

Social Disruption In The Gothic Novels Of Horace Walpole, Elizabeth Inchbald, And Jane Austen., Lia Criselda Lim Pun-Chuen May 2005

Social Disruption In The Gothic Novels Of Horace Walpole, Elizabeth Inchbald, And Jane Austen., Lia Criselda Lim Pun-Chuen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Gothic novel plays on the exaggeration of prescribed sex roles and uses various narrative techniques to produce a social commentary on gender politics and to illustrate the consequences of a destroyed social structure. Through the examination of the construct of the Gothic narrative and its fragmentary style, the novels of Horace Walpole, Elizabeth Inchbald, and Jane Austen reveal similar treatments of the sexuality of their characters. The implementation of key Gothic elements—such as the castle, tyrannical father, and distressed damsel—serve to propel the novels’ questioning of the patriarchal system, the theme of women as commodities, and the economic value …

A Gis Model For Predicting Potential "High Risk" Areas Of West Nile Virus By Identifying Ideal Mosquito Breeding Habitats, Robert Charles Wallis May 2005

A Gis Model For Predicting Potential "High Risk" Areas Of West Nile Virus By Identifying Ideal Mosquito Breeding Habitats, Robert Charles Wallis

Theses and Dissertations

West Nile virus has become a major risk to humans since its first appearance in New York City in 1999. Physicians and state health officials are interested in new and more efficient methods for monitoring disease spread and predicting future outbreaks. This study modeled habitat suitability for mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus. Habitat characteristics were used to derive risk maps for the entire state of Mississippi. Statistical significance tests yielded objective evidence for choosing among many habitat variables. Variables that were significantly correlated with diagnosed human cases for 2002 were combined in weighted linear algebraic models using a geographic …

For years, storytellers have been going to schools to share stories with children. However, to date only limited research has been done on the effects of storytelling on children’s learning. This project was part of an ongoing study involving several researchers. In this portion of the project, the effects of storytelling and story reading were compared. The population studied consisted of kindergarten, first, and second grade students. Half the students were read stories aloud, the other half were told the same stories by a storyteller. Data were collected regarding students ability to recall facts they had heard, as well as …

Chronic Olanzapine Treatment Eliminates Cognitive Deficits Produced By Neonatal Quinpirole Treatment., Stephanie K. Thacker May 2005

Chronic Olanzapine Treatment Eliminates Cognitive Deficits Produced By Neonatal Quinpirole Treatment., Stephanie K. Thacker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated the effects of chronic olanzapine treatment on cognitive performance and neurochemical function in a rodent model of schizophrenia. Animals were neonatally treated with quinpirole, a dopamine D2 receptor agonist, or saline. Quinpirole treatment produces an increase of dopamine D2 receptor sensitivity that extends into adulthood, known as D2 receptor priming, similar to a phenomenon that occurs in schizophrenia. These same rats were treated in adulthood for 28 days with olanzapine, an atypical antipsychotic, or saline. Dopamine D2- primed rats demonstrated significant deficits on a cognitive task that were alleviated by olanzapine treatment. …

Analytical Method For Detecting Pcb Derivatives At Low Levels In Surface Water Samples By Solid Phase Extraction-Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, Shannon Recca Alford May 2005

Analytical Method For Detecting Pcb Derivatives At Low Levels In Surface Water Samples By Solid Phase Extraction-Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, Shannon Recca Alford

Theses and Dissertations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and their metabolic derivatives are ubiquitous environmental contaminants. These compounds are of concern because of their persistence and bioaccumulation in nature. PCBs and the hydroxylated metabolites have shown endocrine-disrupting activity. A method of detection in surface water samples is important to identify and quantify the environmental contamination. In this research we have attempted to develop a method of detection. Six representative polychloromethoxybiphenyls (PCMBs) were prepared. The corresponding polychlorobiphenylols, hydroxylated PCB metabolites (OH-PCBs), were prepared from the PCMBs. A method coupling solid phase extraction with liquid chromatography, on-line electrospray ionization, and mass spectrometry (SPE-LC/ESI/MS) was developed for detection …

A feature extraction technique was used to identify aquaculture from satellite imagery. Variations in well water depth were examined in relation to the changes in aquaculture to explore its affects on the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer (MRVA) aquifer. A soil moisture index was used to investigate preferential expansion of aquaculture onto soil moisture types. This study found that aquaculture expanded from 66,000 acres in 1984 to 142,000 acres in 2001. Total acreage of individual counties from the Feature Extraction is higher than estimates …

Effective Teaching Strategies Of Foreign Languages In Secondary Diverse Classrooms, Helen Singletary-Brinson May 2005

Effective Teaching Strategies Of Foreign Languages In Secondary Diverse Classrooms, Helen Singletary-Brinson

Theses and Dissertations

The traditional style of teaching (teachers solely in charge of the classroom) seems to be a thing of the past, due in part, to the increasing diversity of students in the classroom. How can teachers abandon their traditional roles and adapt to the trends of teaching to promote more meaningful learning for students? To respond to the above question, the researcher investigated the degree of readiness of selected foreign language teachers teaching in culturally diverse classrooms at the secondary level in central Mississippi. All participants were purposefully selected. Methods and procedures employed were limited to observations of teachers, teacher-student interaction …

The Loon Pond Experience May 2005

The Loon Pond Experience

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Since a previous study dealt with the water quality of Loon Pond, this year’s study focused on the possible presence of invasive aquatic weeds. Lakeville, like other towns in Massachusetts, is having a difficult battle with Eurasian Milfoil. The Lakeville Conservation Commission wanted to know whether the weed had also invaded Loon Pond. The study found many indigenous species of aquatic weeds. There was no evidence of Eurasian Milfoil. Water quality was within acceptable limits for pH, DO, temperature, reactive phosphorus and nitrogen as nitrate. Any increases in monthly concentrations of RP and NO3 were explained by weather and …

Long Pond Five Site Study May 2005

Long Pond Five Site Study

Watershed Access Lab Projects

Long Pond, due to changes in demographics over the past 20 years, is experiencing environmental stress from two sources. One is the documented presence of Eurasian Milfoil and the other is the increased population density with small lot size in areas immediately adjacent to the pond. Lakeville Conservation Commission has tested and found fecal coliform bacteria in private wells of residents on Long Pond. In 2001, ARHS students found fecal coliforms the water of the pond itself. The Commission wanted to know whether the presence of fecal coliforms and concentrations of reactive phosphorus are weather dependent. Sampling for fecal coliforms …

Cleaning The Quequechan River May 2005

Cleaning The Quequechan River

Watershed Access Lab Projects

The 2005 Quequechan River Project has a couple of interesting subplots: The fecal coliform bacteria data, the increasing phosphorus levels, the leaf decomposition project, and the sewer overflow diversion project.

  1. We had no bacteria growth for the samples we collected this year. That could be a good thing resulting from the tunnel project diverting sewer overflow waters or it could just be because we had no rain before we sampled.
  2. Our biotic index indicated a severely impacted river (7.0). We collected mostly scuds from our site below the bridge. However, when we went with Olyssa Starry from the Urban Environmental …

Probabilistic Risk Assessment For Snails, Slugs, And Endangered Honeycreepers In Diphacinone Rodenticide Baited Areas On Hawaii, Usa, John J. Johnston, William C. Pitt, Robert T. Sugihara, John D. Eisemann, Thomas M. Primus, Melvin J. Holmes, Joe Crocker, Andy Hart May 2005

Probabilistic Risk Assessment For Snails, Slugs, And Endangered Honeycreepers In Diphacinone Rodenticide Baited Areas On Hawaii, Usa, John J. Johnston, William C. Pitt, Robert T. Sugihara, John D. Eisemann, Thomas M. Primus, Melvin J. Holmes, Joe Crocker, Andy Hart

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Three probabilistic models were developed for characterizing the risk of mortality and sub-acute coagulopathy to Poouli, an endangered non-target avian species, in broadcast diphacinone-baited areas on Hawaii, USA. For single-day exposure, the risk of Poouli mortality approaches 0. For 5-d exposure, the mean probability of mortality increased to 3% for adult and 8% for juvenile Poouli populations. For Poouli that consume snails containing diphacinone residues for 14 d, the model predicted increased levels of coagulopathy for 0.42 and 11% of adult and juvenile Poouli populations, respectively. Worst-case deterministic risk characterizations predicted acceptable levels of risk for non-threatened or endangered species …
