There are several ways to keep current with the latest legal news and trends. One of the simplest methods is to become familiar with legal news web sites and visit them regularly. Many legal news web sites offer the option for visitors to sign up for e-mail alerts that can provide up-to-the-minute news delivered to your e-mail inbox. It is also possible to use a combination of web resources and e-mail to monitor court dockets. If you need in-depth information about a topic, you might consider joining a legal listserv or e-mail discussion list. Finally a recent strategy for staying …

Deer-Vehicle Crash Hotspots In Utah: Data For Effective Mitigation, Chris Kassar, John A. Bissonette May 2005

Deer-Vehicle Crash Hotspots In Utah: Data For Effective Mitigation, Chris Kassar, John A. Bissonette

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Animal-vehicle collisions and their associated ecological impacts have been reported since at least the early 1920s and continue to be of national and international concern today. Over 1 million deer-vehicle crashes may occur each year in the United States. On average, ~2,300 deer are reported killed on Utah highways each year. Reported numbers of deer-vehicle collisions may be conservative because only from ½ to 1/6 of deer vehicle collisions that occur are actually reported to authorities. The number of wildlife-vehicle collisions continues to grow with increasing urban and suburban development, growing numbers of vehicle miles traveled per year (VMT), and …

The Human Factors Of Algorithms And Sensor Design, Paul Picciano, Frank Drews May 2005

The Human Factors Of Algorithms And Sensor Design, Paul Picciano, Frank Drews

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Human-operated systems often suffer from designers’ limited consideration of user capacities and how they impact system performance. In many instances, technological capabilities and constraints drive design decisions. There is often a sense that if it can be done technologically, it will be done. However, this approach can prove to be an unwise appropriation of funds, time, and other resources. Justification should not simply rest on satiating a technology craving.

Red Bat (Lasiurus Borealis) Habitat Use In Actively Managed Forested Landscapes Of The Virginia Piedmont, Kathryn A. Durkee

Theses & Honors Papers

Bat habitat in the southeastern U.S. is being threatened by rapid deforestation and degradation, yet conservation and management strategies are limited by the paucity of accurate bat demographic and habitat-use data. I conducted summer mist-net surveys to determine species richness, relative abundance, reproductive condition, and sex ratios of the bat species occurring in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest in the Piedmont physiographic region of central Virginia. I captured 8 species: red bat (Lasiurus borealis), eastern pipistrelle (Pipistrellus subflavus) , little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) , northern myotis (M septentrionalis ), big brown bat (Eptesicusfascus), evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis), hoary bat (L. …

Novelty Reward As A Measure Of Anhedonia, Rick A. Bevins, Joyce Besheer May 2005

Novelty Reward As A Measure Of Anhedonia, Rick A. Bevins, Joyce Besheer

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

A decrease in sensitivity to pleasurable stimuli, anhedonia, is a major symptom of depression in humans. Several animal models have been developed to simulate this symptom (e.g. drug withdrawal, learned helplessness) using reward-sensitive procedures such as intracranial self-stimulation and progressive ratio responding as a measure of reward function. Recently, we introduced the use of another procedure, novel-object place conditioning in rats, to measure reward function in an associative learning situation. Withdrawal from chronic nicotine blocked a place preference conditioned by access to novel objects. This blockade was not due to impairment of object interaction, general activity, novelty detection, environmental familiarization, …

Humane Education: The Effects Of Animals In The Classroom On Children's Empathy In Japanese Elementary Schools, Mika Maruyama May 2005

Humane Education: The Effects Of Animals In The Classroom On Children's Empathy In Japanese Elementary Schools, Mika Maruyama

Dissertations and Theses

Although humane education, promoting children's kindness toward animals, has been evaluated as a factor influencing children's kindness toward humans later in their life, the effect of a classroom pet hasn't been well studied. The current study investigated the influence of intensified daily interactions with living animals in the classroom on the development of empathy among Japanese children. Specifically, the study examined (a) the effect of introducing animals into the classroom on children's empathic behaviors and attitudes, and (b) the generalization of this animal-directed empathy to humans.

The Molecular Characterization Of A Predicted Glycosyltransferase From Lycopersicon Esculentum, Alberto G. Distefano May 2005

The Molecular Characterization Of A Predicted Glycosyltransferase From Lycopersicon Esculentum, Alberto G. Distefano

Honors Scholar Theses

The synthesis of the plant cell wall is very complex, and understanding how this process occurs will lead to many benefits for future research and industries dependent upon cell walls for their products. The recent discovery of the functions of AtMUR3 and AtGT18 in Arabidopsis thaliana as xyloglucan galactosyltransferases has led to the identification of many more putative glycosyltransferases in the Arabidopsis genome. Due to the structural differences between the xyloglucans of Arabidopsis and solanaceous plants, we decided to search for putative arabinosyltransferases in the Solanaceae. Solanaceous xyloglucan is substituted by one to two arabinosyl residues at the second xylose …
