Spring Field Report, March-May 2005, W. Ross Silcock Jun 2005

Spring Field Report, March-May 2005, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

As is often the case, the spring season had something for everyone: potential range expansions, an incredible shorebird migration through the eastern Rainwater Basin, a scarcity of migrant warblers, and some genuinely rare birds.

Timely spring rainfall transformed the Rainwater Basin, leaving large areas of sheetwater for migrant shorebirds and improving the attractiveness of wetlands, particularly renovated wetlands, to certain breeding species.

Perhaps the most important bits of information we can record here are changes in breeding ranges or behavior. Of significance here is the second nesting record for Hooded Merganser, the increasing occurrence of Greater Prairie-Chickens at Rainwater Basin …

Native Texas Avifauna Altered By Suburban Entrapment And Method For Easily Assessing Natural Avifaunal Value, Frederick R. Gehlbach Jun 2005

Native Texas Avifauna Altered By Suburban Entrapment And Method For Easily Assessing Natural Avifaunal Value, Frederick R. Gehlbach

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Suburban sprawl in a central-Texas city gradually entrapped native nesting birds in a heavily wooded ravine. The birds were spot-mapped in 6-ha plots for 39 years, and the kinds and causes of avifaunal change were measured. Habitat area was reduced overall but not in study plots, which were partly modified by sewer-line construction, and temperatures became warmer. Permanent-resident populations were stable or grew with invasions by four species, while three species were lost. Summer-resident populations declined, and nine species were lost. At the end of study, survivors were largely permanent residents and arboreal and cavity nesters by contrast to lost …

The Need For Standardization Of Aggregates For Concrete Production In Ethiopian Construction Industry, Abebe Dinku Jun 2005

The Need For Standardization Of Aggregates For Concrete Production In Ethiopian Construction Industry, Abebe Dinku

International Conference on African Development Archives

Concrete is one of the versatile and widely used building material in the world construction industry. Fine and coarse aggregates make about 70% by volume of concrete production. It goes without saying that the quality of concrete is thus strongly influenced by aggregate’s physical and mechanical properties as well as chemical composition of the parent aggregate making material. This calls for a critical identification and classification of aggregates so that they are used to meet the intended purpose.

In this article, the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of aggregates are reviewed. The sources and modes of production of coarse and …

Socioeconomic Impact Of Export Oriented Agricultural Production On Farmers, In Eastern Ethiopia, Adem Kedir

International Conference on African Development Archives

This study was undertaken to assess the socio-economic impact of producing export oriented agricultural crops on the livelihoods of the farmers, in eastern Ethiopia. A random sample of 305 farmers was studied. Comparisons were made between producers and non-producers using the Z- test and regression analysis. It was found that producers of export oriented crops are better off than the non-producers in terms of sending children to elementary school, housing conditions and ability to finance their families’ food requirements. The impact of father’s education, number of children and livestock ownership on the improvements in the livelihoods of the farmers and …

Rational Choice And Rat Choice: Some Thoughts On The Relationship Among Rationality, Markets, And Human Beings, Edward L. Rubin Jun 2005

Rational Choice And Rat Choice: Some Thoughts On The Relationship Among Rationality, Markets, And Human Beings, Edward L. Rubin

Chicago-Kent Law Review

For about 2,500 years, the term rationality has been used in the Western world to describe the application of human reason to a wide range of problems or issues. In the past thirty years, however, the term has been appropriated by microeconomists and microeconomically-oriented social scientists to mean something quite different—the application of instrumental rationality to the particular problem of material self-interest maximization. This Article will attempt to recapture the original meaning of the term rationality, and explain the place of the microeconomic model within it. Using Weber's distinction between instrumental rationality and values rationality, it will argue that all …

A Nontechnical Introduction To "Biocontrol As Usual": Review Of Ann Hajek, Natural Enemies, Svata M. Louda Jun 2005

A Nontechnical Introduction To "Biocontrol As Usual": Review Of Ann Hajek, Natural Enemies, Svata M. Louda

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Increasing recognition of the problems posed by invasive, exotic species has led to a recent upsurge of interest in the potential of biological control as a sustainable management strategy. The idea that ‘‘natural control’’ could be re-established on a species in its new environment is a seductive one, nurtured by a small set of impressive success stories and the belief in a simple solution (‘‘silver bullet’’). Yet, recent serendipitous discoveries also make it clear that attempts to engineer the outcome of species interactions in new systems can lead to undesired direct and indirect effects of unanticipated magnitude on non-targeted native …

The Evolution Of Our Preferences: Evidence From Capuchin-Monkey Trading Behavior, Keith M. Chen, Venkat Lakshminarayanan, Laurie Santos Jun 2005

The Evolution Of Our Preferences: Evidence From Capuchin-Monkey Trading Behavior, Keith M. Chen, Venkat Lakshminarayanan, Laurie Santos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Behavioral economics has demonstrated systematic decision-making biases in both lab and field data. But are these biases learned or innate? We investigate this question using experiments on a novel set of subjects — capuchin monkeys. By introducing a fiat currency and trade to a capuchin colony, we are able to recover their preferences over a wide range of goods and risky choices. We show that standard price theory does a remarkably good job of describing capuchin purchasing behavior; capuchin monkeys react rationally to both price and wealth shocks. However, when capuchins are faced with more complex choices including risky gambles, …

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Of Cancer: Current Status And Future Prospects, Rolf F. Barth, Jeffrey A. Coderre, M. Graça H. Vicente, Thomas E. Blue Jun 2005

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Of Cancer: Current Status And Future Prospects, Rolf F. Barth, Jeffrey A. Coderre, M. Graça H. Vicente, Thomas E. Blue

Faculty Publications

Background: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is based on the nuclear reaction that occurs when boron-10 is irradiated with low-energy thermal neutrons to yield high linear energy transfer α particles and recoiling lithium-7 nuclei. Clinical interest in BNCT has focused primarily on the treatment of high-grade gliomas and either cutaneous primaries or cerebral metastases of melanoma, most recently, head and neck and liver cancer. Neutron sources for BNCT currently are limited to nuclear reactors and these are available in the United States, Japan, several European countries, and Argentina. Accelerators also can be used to produce epithermal neutrons and these are …

Subzero Water Permeability Parameters And Optimal Freezing Rates For Sperm Cells Of The Southern Platyfish, Xiphophorus Maculatus, D. Pinisetty, C. Huang, Q. Dong, T. R. Tiersch, R. V. Devireddy

Faculty Publications

This study reports the subzero water transport characteristics (and empirically determined optimal rates for freezing) of sperm cells of live-bearing fishes of the genus Xiphophorus, specifically those of the southern platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus. These fishes are valuable models for biomedical research and are commercially raised as ornamental fish for use in aquariums. Water transport during freezing of X. maculatus sperm cell suspensions was obtained using a shape-independent differential scanning calorimeter technique in the presence of extracellular ice at a cooling rate of 20°C/min in three different media: (1) Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS) without cryoprotective agents (CPAs); (2) HBSS with …

Segmentation Of Thermal Images For Non-Destructive Applications, Solange Yohali Jun 2005

Segmentation Of Thermal Images For Non-Destructive Applications, Solange Yohali

Masters Theses

Infrared Thermogarphy (IR) is used in this project to detect subsurface conditions in concrete specimen for nondestructive testing and evaluations. This thesis goal is to bridge the gap between Infrared Testing and image analysis by developing an algorithm based on the region growing approach to segment the images and identify the voids without human interference or prior knowledge of the conditions. The segmentation algorithm starts with seed points as the hottest pixels in the image, and then regions are grown based on a neighborhood comparison criterion. The algorithm was tested on images collected from concrete specimen containing various man-made defects …

Manganese Distribution Across The Blood-Brain Barrier. Iv. Evidence For Brain Influx Through Store-Operated Calcium Channels, Janelle S. Crossgrove, Robert A. Yokel

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Manganese (Mn) is a required co-factor for many ubiquitous enzymes; however, chronic Mn overexposure can cause manganism, a parkinsonian-like syndrome. Previous studies showed Mn influx into brain is carrier-mediated, though the putative carrier(s) were not established. Studies conducted with cultured bovine brain microvascular endothelial cells (bBMECs), which comprise the blood–brain barrier, revealed 54Mn (II) uptake positively correlated with pH, was temperature-dependent, and was sodium- and energy-independent. Brain 54Mn uptake correlated inversely with calcium (Ca) concentration, but 45Ca uptake was unaltered by high Mn concentration. Lanthanum (La), a non-selective inhibitor of several Ca channel types, as well as …
