Fisheries Occasional Publication No.21 - Allocation Of The Western Rock Lobster Resource Between User Groups, Department Of Fisheries Western Australia Jun 2005

Fisheries Occasional Publication No.21 - Allocation Of The Western Rock Lobster Resource Between User Groups, Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Occasional Publications

In this submission to IFAAC, the Department will outline what it believes are the most practical and cost effective ways of managing a system of allocation amongst the commercial, customary and recreational sectors. This recommendation recognises that cost efficiencies and outcomes will be greatly affected by the type of allocation model that is chosen. Consequently the Department recommends that the allocation system should be based on a single allocation to each sector that is available over the entire fishery.

The Department does not recommend having any finer scale zoning of the allocations, or the creation of exclusive recreational fishing areas. …

Unilateral Effects: The Enforcement Act Under The Old Ec Merger Regulation, Claus-Dieter Ehlermann, Axel Gutermuth Jun 2005

Unilateral Effects: The Enforcement Act Under The Old Ec Merger Regulation, Claus-Dieter Ehlermann, Axel Gutermuth

Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr Antitrust Series

The reform of the EC Merger Regulation was preceded by an animated debate about whether the traditional "dominance" test allowed the Commission to challenge mergers that did not lead to single firm or collective dominance in the traditional sense, but nevertheless may have reduced competition to the detriment of consumers. The authors submit that the dominance test failed to reach such situations of "unilateral" or "non-coordinated" effects. The old Merger Regulation therefore suffered from a potential "enforcement gap" that was closed only by the legislative change to the "significant impediment of effective competition" test. National jurisdictions still using variants of …

The Identification Of Kappa Casein Genotypes In The Hair Roots Of Dairy Cattle, Duangsmorn Suwattana, Chortip Aroondechachai, Jutarat Jeerasuppachok, Chatree Khatiworavage

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Twenty-two dairy cattle, kept at the Demonstration Farm, Department of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Chulalongkorn University, Nakorn Pathom, were genotyped using hair roots, for the Kappa-casein gene, using a Polymerase Chain Reaction - Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique. The method for obtaining total DNA was simple, requiring only the digestion of the root of the hair end in a buffer compatible with the subsequent PCR, without any prior purification or extraction step. Two types of alleles, A and B, were in the frequencies of 0.77 and 0.23, espectively. Genotypes AA, AB and BB were demonstrated with the …

The Portrayal Of African American Women In Hip-Hop Videos, Ladel Lewis Jun 2005

The Portrayal Of African American Women In Hip-Hop Videos, Ladel Lewis

Masters Theses

This study analyzed 52 of the most popular hip-hop videos aired on Black Entertainment Television in the summer of 2004. Using a qualitative content analysis instrument used in a previous study, three prominent characteristics in these videos were identified: (1) the level of sexism, (2) the presence of intimate touch and/or the presence of alluring attire. From those characteristics, it was discerned that there were more videos that possessed high levels of sexism than those that had very little or non . It was also found that the majority of the videos depicted women wearing alluring attire and having intimate …

An Assessment Of An Education Package Intervention Targeting The Appropriate Reporting Of Suspected Child Abuse, Clinton K. Wirtz Jun 2005

An Assessment Of An Education Package Intervention Targeting The Appropriate Reporting Of Suspected Child Abuse, Clinton K. Wirtz

Masters Theses

The proper reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect continues to be a concern despite laws requiring professionals working with children to report any suspicion of child abuse or neglect to Children's Protective Services (CPS). This study assesses the efficacy of an education intervention versus the Michigan Child Protection Law (CPL) using 29 undergraduate child psychology students. Videotaped scenarios of simulated child interviews were used in a pretest/posttest between-groups design. Child physical abuse was the focus of the study. The results of the student participants' decisions regarding the videotaped scenarios were compared to the results of 10 CPS employees having …

Reductionism And Holism, Chance And Selection, Mechanism And Mind, Ursula Goodenough Jun 2005

Reductionism And Holism, Chance And Selection, Mechanism And Mind, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

Despite its rich and deepening panoply of empirical support, evolutionary theory continues to generate widespread concern. Some of this concern can be attributed to misunderstandings of the original concept, some to unfamiliarity with its current trajectories, and some to strongly held fears that it strips the human of cherished attributes. In this essay I seek to deconstruct such misunderstandings, lift up current concepts of what evolution entails, and address some of the existential issues it generates.

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The effect of formulation, fungal concentration, type and seasonal changes on the mortality of the tick Amblyomma variegatum was investigated. A previous study demonstrated high pathogenicity of strains of the fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae against the ticks Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Amblyomma variegatum (Kaaya et al. J Invertebr Pathol 1996; 67: 15-20). The present study was undertaken to explore possible additive or synergistic effects of the two fungi on A. variegatum. The effects of oil and water formulations at different concentrations of each fungus and combination of the two on the mortality of A. variegatum in the laboratory and …

Review Essay: A Prescription For Perilous Times, Neil S. Siegel Jun 2005

Review Essay: A Prescription For Perilous Times, Neil S. Siegel

Faculty Scholarship

It seldom happens that a scholar makes a lasting contribution both to legal history and to the most pressing constitutional issues of the day in the same work. It is more rare that an academic does so in a book accessible to a general audience. Perilous Times accomplishes that feat. For these reasons, and for another as well, the book should be regarded as a triumph.

Clinical Decision-Making About Psychopathy And Violence Risk Assessment In Public Sector Mental Health Settings, Eric B. Elbogen, Matthew T. Huss, Alan Tomkins, Mario J. Scalora Jun 2005

Clinical Decision-Making About Psychopathy And Violence Risk Assessment In Public Sector Mental Health Settings, Eric B. Elbogen, Matthew T. Huss, Alan Tomkins, Mario J. Scalora

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although there has been extensive research on psychopathy, it is unknown how, or whether, clinicians in public sector mental health settings consider the Psychopathy Checklist (PCL) for assessing violence risk. Mental health clinicians (N = 135) from 4 facilities were interviewed by using multiple methods for collecting data on decision making. Participants considered clinical information most often when assessing violence risk, indicating that these data were most readily available. Clinicians perceived formal testing results (e.g., PCL) to be least available and considered testing least often, especially if clinicians had less clinical experience. Participants did not explicitly report using the …

The Ecology And Evolution Of Patience In Two New World Monkeys, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Elizabeth V. Hallinan, Marc D. Hauser Jun 2005

The Ecology And Evolution Of Patience In Two New World Monkeys, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Elizabeth V. Hallinan, Marc D. Hauser

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Decision making often involves choosing between small, short-term rewards and large, long-term rewards. All animals, humans included, discount future rewards—the present value of delayed rewards is viewed as less than the value of immediate rewards. Despite its ubiquity, there exists considerable but unexplained variation between species in their capacity to wait for rewards—that is, to exert patience or self-control. Using two closely related primates—common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) and cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus)— we uncover a variable that may explain differences in how species discount future rewards. Both species faced a self-control paradigm in which individuals chose …

Australia's Damaging International Trade Practice: The Case Against Cruelty To Greyhounds, Alison G. Jones Jun 2005

Australia's Damaging International Trade Practice: The Case Against Cruelty To Greyhounds, Alison G. Jones

Washington International Law Journal

The Australian greyhound racing industry is capitalizing on newly emerging markets in countries such as China and South Korea. The industry's drive to profit from promoting greyhound racing in these countries has put the welfare of greyhounds at risk. By exporting these dogs to China and South Korea, Australia is violating the spirit and general intent of its own animal cruelty laws, which guard against the type of animal abuse that occurs largely unchecked in those countries. Therefore, Australia should put an end to such exports as soon as possible. Under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade ("GATT"), Australia …

Systematic Metaphor Analysis As A Method Of Qualitative Research, Rudolph Schmitt Jun 2005

Systematic Metaphor Analysis As A Method Of Qualitative Research, Rudolph Schmitt

The Qualitative Report

George Lakoff and Mark Johnsons theory of metaphor (1980, 1999) provides a basis for describing everyday cognitive structures using linguistic models and thus, making it possible to uncover both individual and collective patterns of thought and action. Lakoff and Johnson have not, however, developed a workable system for carrying out qualitative research. This paper outlines the fundamentals of this approach and proposes a procedure for the reconstruction of metaphorical concepts. As is normally the case in qualitative research, such guidelines can only ever represent the interplay between the ability of the researcher to understand the sense of things and the …
