Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Despite having a very low incidence of disease, reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are subject to tuberculosis (TB) testing requirements for interstate shipment and herd accreditation in the United States. Improved TB tests are desperately needed, as many reindeer are falsely classified as reactors by current testing procedures. Sera collected sequentially from 11 (experimentally) Mycobacterium bovis-infected reindeer and 4 noninfected reindeer were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunoblotting, and multiantigen print immunoassay (MAPIA) for antibody specific to M. bovis antigens. Specific antibody was detected as early as 4 weeks after challenge with M. bovis. By MAPIA, sera …

Regulation On Sino-Foreign Cooperation In Making Television Programs, Litong Chen Jun 2005

Regulation On Sino-Foreign Cooperation In Making Television Programs, Litong Chen

Washington International Law Journal

The Chinese Government traditionally has believed that the voices of adversaries, whether foreign or domestic, should not be heard. The Preamble to the Chinese Constitution states that, "The Chinese people must fight against those forces and elements, both at home and abroad, that are hostile to China's socialist system and try to undermine it."' The beachhead which has been regarded as most critical for the Communist Party of China ("CPC") to defend is China's mass media—the CPC's mouthpiece for its ideological rhetoric. Conventionally, the best way to keep a beachhead is to repel the enemy from its shores. Historically, China …

Extreme Policy Makeover: Re-Evaluating Current U.S.-Vietnam Relations Under The International Religious Freedom Act, Kevin V. Tu Jun 2005

Extreme Policy Makeover: Re-Evaluating Current U.S.-Vietnam Relations Under The International Religious Freedom Act, Kevin V. Tu

Washington International Law Journal

Following the signing of the Paris Peace Accord in 1973, the relationship between the United States and Vietnam remained essentially frozen. In 2000, the signing of the United States-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement was an epic step in the normalization of relations. In addition, the BTA was hailed as a means of effectuating positive change in the area of Vietnam's human rights. Unfortunately, the state of religious freedom in Vietnam has deteriorated while economic ties with the United States have strengthened. Despite Vietnam's purported respect for religious freedom, violations continue. Vietnam restricts the practice of religion, detains religious leaders, and tolerates …

Is There A Southern Doctor In The House?, Peter S. Carmichael Jun 2005

Is There A Southern Doctor In The House?, Peter S. Carmichael

Civil War Institute Faculty Publications

Doctoring the South does not go down easily, but a patient reader will benefit immeasurably from this brilliantly conceived and thoroughly researched book. Stephen Stowe has penetrated the scientific and cultural world of southern physicians during the mid-nineteenth century, showing how white doctors made meaning of their lives as they struggled to gain mastery of the sickly bodies of others. The confrontation between patient and physician, between sickness and health, reveals what Stowe calls the country orthodoxy style of southern practitioners. Country orthodoxy inextricably tied a doctor’s understanding of what it meant to be a professional to his local community. …

For Love Or Money: Some Emotional Foundations Of Rationality, Gerald L. Clore Jun 2005

For Love Or Money: Some Emotional Foundations Of Rationality, Gerald L. Clore

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Having emotions represents what people value. Just as cognition concerns whether things are true and false; emotion is about whether they are good or bad. Thus, emotion may be a necessity for rationality, rather than its antithesis. Our emotion research shows that emotional feelings provide compelling information about the value of outcomes, actions, and objects. As a result, although it can also lead to excess, emotions provide a coherent basis for judgment and decision. In addition, I suggest that the current psychological theory is helpful in thinking about rationality because it assumes more than one mode of reasoning. Similarly, current …

A Phylogenomic Study Of The Genus Alphavirus Employing Whole Genome Comparison, Aimée J. Luers, Sandra Adams, John V. Smalley, James Campanella Jun 2005

A Phylogenomic Study Of The Genus Alphavirus Employing Whole Genome Comparison, Aimée J. Luers, Sandra Adams, John V. Smalley, James Campanella

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The phylogenetics of the genus Alphavirus have historically been characterized using partial gene, single gene or partial proteomic data. We have mined cDNA and amino acid sequences from GenBank for all fully sequenced and some partially sequenced alphaviruses and generated phylogenomic analyses of the genus Alphavirus genus, employing capsid encoding structural regions, non-structural coding regions and complete viral genomes. Our studies support the presence of the previously reported recombination event that produced the Western Equine Encephalitis clade, and confirm many of the patterns of geographic radiation and divergence of the multiple species. Our data suggest that the Salmon Pancreatic Disease …

In Memory Of Loren ‘Bub’ Blake, Sept. 17, 1944-Oct. 5, 2004, Neal Ratzlaff

Nebraska Bird Review

Loren Blake, known to all of his friends as 'Bub,' entered many of our lives on a fall evening in the late 1980s. The occasion was the traditional shared nature slide session at the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union Fall Field Days. Rumors circulated about a Sandhills rancher interested in birds and photography who was going to show up with a few slides he had taken “around the ranch.” And show up he did, with a carousel of his best! The room was soon buzzing with Oohs, Aahs, and Wows as Bub dazzled us with his crisp, well-composed photos of everything from …

2004 (16th) Report Of The Nou Records Committee, Mark A. Brogie

Nebraska Bird Review

The functions and methods of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union Records Committee are described in its bylaws (NOU Records Committee 1986). The committee's purpose is to provide a procedure for documenting unusual bird sightings and to establish a list of all documented birds for Nebraska. The "Official List of the Birds of Nebraska" was first published in 1988 (NOU Records Committee 1988) and has been updated two times (NOU Records Committee 1997, 2004).

The "Official List" has been appended fourteen times: (Mollhoff 1989, Grenon 1990, 1991, Gubanyi 1996a, 1996b, 1996c, Brogie 1997, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, Jorgensen 2001, 2002, 2003). This …

Northern Saw-Whet Owls: Rare Or Overlooked? An Example From The Central Platte Valley, Daniel H. Kim

Nebraska Bird Review

Assessing the population status for species requires accurate measures of local or regional numbers. For many species, standardized protocols exist for estimating local numbers through visual counts (e.g., Breeding Bird Survey routes, Christmas Bird Count circles, and point count protocols used by the US Forest Service). For many raptor species, monitoring populations at migratory bottlenecks such as the Goshute Mountains, NV, Hawk Mountain, PA, and Cape May, NJ, provide yearly indices of population health. Unfortunately, most monitoring protocols overlook a suite of small crepuscular or nocturnal species. Project Owlnet (www.projectowlnet.org) is a volunteer-based network of banding stations focusing on Northern …

Grazing Intensity Effects On Northern Plains Mixed-Grass Prairie, Wendi M. Rogers, Donald R. Kirby, Paul E. Nyren, Bob D. Patton, Edward S. Dekeyser Jun 2005

Grazing Intensity Effects On Northern Plains Mixed-Grass Prairie, Wendi M. Rogers, Donald R. Kirby, Paul E. Nyren, Bob D. Patton, Edward S. Dekeyser

The Prairie Naturalist

We evaluated the effects of long-term (1988 to 2000) grazing on northern mixed-grass prairie at tI.e Central Grasslands Research Extension Center in south-central North Dakota. We did not detect a difference in herbaceous basal cover between grazing intensities following 12 consecutive years of season-long moderate (50% removal of annual above-ground standing crop) and heavy (80% removal of annual above-ground standing crop) grazing. However, both moderate and heavy grazing intensities reduced above-ground herbaceous standing crop, total root biomass, and soil organic carbon. Moderate grazing intensity maintained a greater amount of deep (10 to 20 cm) and total root biomass relative to …
