The Effects Of Price Regulation On Pharmaceutical R&D And Innovation, Heather M. O'Neill, Lena Clarissa Crain Jun 2005

The Effects Of Price Regulation On Pharmaceutical R&D And Innovation, Heather M. O'Neill, Lena Clarissa Crain

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

As rising health care expenditures focus government attention on slowing the growth, the pharmaceutical industry comes under increasing pressure to curb prices of ethical drugs. Pharmaceutical price regulations have been implemented in many countries to control pharmaceutical expenditures. Yet, creating innovative drugs requires enormous R&D costs, which in turn require adequate expected economic returns. Since price controls reduce profits and expected returns, as countries invoke stricter price regulations, firms will either move their R&D process into less regulated markets or move out of innovative R&D. This paper assesses the impact of drug price regulations in Japan compared to market-priced drugs …

Heat Damage In Alfalfa Silage, Alvaro Garcia Jun 2005

Heat Damage In Alfalfa Silage, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Differences in maturity of the stand, the weather, and harvesting, storing practices, and facilities affect the successful preservation of alfalfa silage. Silage fermentation is basically a destructive process, for nutrients are lost through chemical changes. The feeding value of alfalfa silage will always be less than that of the original forage, and the ensiling practices that are used will determine the extent of those losses. Losses from fresh forage to the ensiled feed arise from one or more of the following: field, oxidation, fermentation, and effluent. Aeration and the heating that results are among the most important causes.

Rethinking Fiscal Federalism, David A. Super Jun 2005

Rethinking Fiscal Federalism, David A. Super

Faculty Scholarship

Although interactions between federal and state taxes and spending programs are becoming increasingly controversial, this Article asserts that major theories of federalism built to divide regulatory authority between the two levels of government poorly account for the quite different problems of fiscal cooperation and competition. The Article therefore identifies and distinguishes three justifications for federal funding of states’ operations: In some programs, funding seeks to insulate states from particular fiscal burdens, such as the side effects of federal policies or the abrupt termination of federal responsibility for particular problems. In other programs, funding provides an incentive for states to follow …

The Frat Volume 103 Number 02 April, May & June 2005, The National Fraternal Society Of The Deaf (Nfsd)

2001-2006

The Frat was the official member publication of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf (NFSD). First established in 1902, the publication ran for just over a century, until its closure in 2006.---NFSD was an insurance business established in 1901. Its purposes were to provide insurance to mainly Deaf members, to serve as an advocate for the Deaf, and to provide community service and recreational opportunities through divisional activities. The existing insurance coverage was transferred to the Catholic Order of Foresters in 2005. The NFSD disbanded in 2007.---The Frat's main purpose was to keep members apprised of the activities of …

Microcredit, Social Capital, And Politics: The Case Of A Small Rural Town—Gossas, Sendgal, Jainaba M. L. Kah, Dana L. Olds, Muhammadou M. O. Kah

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Through an exploratory approach, we studied the evolution, sustainability, and management of ten microcredit institutions located in Gossas, a small town in Senegal, Sub-Saharan Africa. Prevailing ideas about social capital, in the form of social relationships within and between microcredit institutions and financing NGOs, donors, and governments, are examined using both rational choice and Marxist social capital theories to highlight the social struggles in social capital. This study goes beyond a microcredit impact analysis by including an exploratory institutional study to examine broader social and economic changes, including the new institutional changes brought about by neoliberal reforms, the emerging roles …

Xiphiorhynchus Cf. X. Eocaenicus (Woodward, 1901), (Scombroidei: Xiphiidae: Xiphiorhynchinae) From The Middle Eocene Of Mississippi, The First Transatlantic Distribution Of A Species Of Xiphiorhynchus, Harry L. Fierstine, James E. Starnes

Biological Sciences

An anterior (distal) rostrum (MMNS 2957) from the Moodys Branch Formation (late middle Eocene). Tesheva Creek, Yazoo County, Mississippi, U.S.A., is described and identified as Xiphiorhynchus cf. X. eocaenicus. The specimen is compared to various species of Xiphiorhynchus, especially the holotype of X. eocaenicl.ls (BMNH 25744), Braeklesham Group, early middle Eocene, England. This represents the first record of a species of Xiphiorhynchl.ls in deposits on both sides of the North Atlantic Ocean. Xiphiorhynchus eocaenicus is thought to have had similar environmental prtoferences and habits as the extant swordfish, Xiphias gladius. Since the swordfish prefers oceanic water and makes transatlantic movements, …
