Effects Of Adoptive Transfer Of Beta-Amyloid Sensitive Immune Cells In A Mouse Model For Alzheimer’S Disease, Daniel Shippy
Effects Of Adoptive Transfer Of Beta-Amyloid Sensitive Immune Cells In A Mouse Model For Alzheimer’S Disease, Daniel Shippy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
One major therapeutic target for preventing and treating Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is removal of excess β-amyloid (Aβ) from the brain. Both active and passive immunotherapies targeting Aβ have proven effective in reducing brain Aβ levels and improving cognitive function in mouse transgenic models of AD. However, these approaches can induce adverse neuropathologic effects and immunologic over-activation. Indeed, clinical trials of active Aβ immunotherapy in AD patients were halted due to development of meningoencephalitis, apparently resulting from wide-spread neuroinflammation. Here we show that a more restricted and specific immune re-activation through a single adoptive transfer of Aβ-specific T cells can provide …

Genetic Evaluation Of Dairy Cattle With Test-Day Models With Autoregressive Covariance Structures And With A 305-D Model, R. M. Sawalha, Jeffrey F. Keown, Stephen D. Kachman, L. Dale Van Vleck
Genetic Evaluation Of Dairy Cattle With Test-Day Models With Autoregressive Covariance Structures And With A 305-D Model, R. M. Sawalha, Jeffrey F. Keown, Stephen D. Kachman, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
This study compared genetic evaluations from 3 test-day (TD) models with different assumptions about the environmental covariance structure for TD records and genetic evaluations from 305-d lactation records for dairy cows. Estimates of genetic values of 12,071 first lactation Holstein cows were obtained with the 3 TD models using 106,472 TD records. The compound symmetry (CS) model was a simple test-day repeatability animal model with compound symmetry covariance structure for TD environmental effects. The ARs and ARe models also used TD records but with a first-order autoregressive covariance structure among short-term environmental effects or residuals, respectively. Estimates of …

Comparison Of Nicarbazin Absorption In Chickens, Mallards, And Canada Geese, C. A. Yoder, L. A. Miller, K. S. Bynum
Comparison Of Nicarbazin Absorption In Chickens, Mallards, And Canada Geese, C. A. Yoder, L. A. Miller, K. S. Bynum
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Nicarbazin (NCZ), a coccidiostat commonly used in the poultry industry, causes reduced hatchability and egg quality in layer hens at a concentration of 125 ppm (8.4 mg/kg) in the feed. Although this effect is undesirable in the poultry industry, NCZ could provide a useful wildlife contraception tool for waterfowl, particularly urban geese. We tested the absorption of NCZ in chickens (Gallus gallus), mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), and Canada geese (Branta canadensis) gavaged with 8.4 mg of NCZ/kg per bird each day for 8 d. Plasma levels of 4,4'-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC) differed significantly among species. Peak plasma DNC levels were 2.87 f 0.15 …
Intermediary Metabolism And Life History Trade-Offs: Lipid Metabolism In Lines Of The Wing-Polymorphic Cricket, Gryllus Firmus, Selected For Flight Capability Vs. Early Age Reproduction, Anthony J. Zera
Anthony Zera Publications
The extent to which modifications in intermediary metabolism contribute to life history variation and trade-offs is an important but poorly understood aspect of life history evolution. Artificial selection was used to produce replicate genetic stocks of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, that were nearly pure-breeding for either the flight-capable (LW[f]) morph, which delays ovarian growth, or the flightless (SW) morph, which exhibits enhanced early-age fecundity. LW(f) lines accumulated substantially more triglyceride, the main flight fuel in Gryllus, compared with SW-selected lines, and enhanced accumulation of triglyceride was strongly associated with reduced ovarian growth. Increased triglyceride accumulation in LW(f) lines resulted …

Epigenetic Transgenerational Actions Of Endocrine Disruptors And Male Fertility, Matthew D. Anway, Andrea S. Cupp, Mehmet Uzumcu, Michael K. Skinner
Epigenetic Transgenerational Actions Of Endocrine Disruptors And Male Fertility, Matthew D. Anway, Andrea S. Cupp, Mehmet Uzumcu, Michael K. Skinner
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Transgenerational effects of environmental toxins require either a chromosomal or epigenetic alteration in the germ line. Transient exposure of a gestating female rat during the period of gonadal sex determination to the endocrine disruptors vinclozolin (an antiandrogenic compound) or methoxychlor (an estrogenic compound) induced an adult phenotype in the F1 generation of decreased spermatogenic capacity (cell number and viability) and increased incidence of male infertility. These effects were transferred through the male germ line to nearly all males of all subsequent generations examined (that is, F1 to F4). The effects on reproduction correlate with altered DNA …
Investigating Affective Dimensions Of Whiteness In The Cultural Studies Writing Classroom: Toward A Critical, Feminist, Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Allison Brimmer
Investigating Affective Dimensions Of Whiteness In The Cultural Studies Writing Classroom: Toward A Critical, Feminist, Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Allison Brimmer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation seeks to help teachers understand the ways that affect is tied to the dominant ideology of white supremacy in contemporary U.S. society. It argues that affect—the complex confluence of feeling and judgment—is bound intricately to racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, etc. In this work I attempt to deconstruct the social construction of affect that fuels dominant white ideology— what some scholars call whiteness—in the context of white teachers and students in the cultural studies writing classroom. With the lofty yet ultimately empowering goal of effecting anti-racist change in the classroom and in the profession, I trace affective dimensions of …

Horse Farm Owner Dies When Pinned Under Golf Cart, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Horse Farm Owner Dies When Pinned Under Golf Cart, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center
Fatality Case Reports--Other
On January 31, 2004, a 45-year old female horse farm owner (decedent) died when she was pinned under a golf cart. The woman had driven a gas-powered golf cart from her house on the farm to the horse barn to muck stalls and put horses in the barn. After driving the golf cart into the barn, the farm owner placed two square bales of hay on the golf cart; one on the back and one on the passenger side of the front seat. Leaving the ignition key of the golf cart in the “on” position, she left the golf cart …
Whooping Cranes: The Road To Survival
Whooping Cranes: The Road To Survival
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Whooping cranes are one of the best known of all endangered species and symbolize the struggle to maintain the vanishing creatures of this world. One scientist estimated that only 1400 whoopers survived by 1860. Their population continued to decline due to drainage of wetlands, conversion of grasslands to agriculture, and hunting until only 15 or 16 cranes survived the winter of 1941-42 in Texas. The present world population is about 450 wild and captive whooping cranes (2005). Only one self-sustaining population survives in the wild; these birds spend the winter at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge on the Texas coast and …

Adaptive Chaos: Mild Disorder May Help, Alexander Golbin, Alexander Umantsev
Adaptive Chaos: Mild Disorder May Help, Alexander Golbin, Alexander Umantsev
Chemistry and Physics Faculty Working Papers
We have qualitatively analyzed different cases of human disorders and displacement activities of animals and hypothesize that some of them are examples of low-dimensional dynamical chaos in biological organisms. We also considered a biological organism in the framework of the control system theory and found that chaotic regime in one subsystem may be compensating for the loss of chaos in another subsystem for the sake of stability of the whole system. According to the hypothesis chaotic behavior of different organs sets in a human body as an alternative to serious diseases or even death. The principle of compensation was applied …

Nato Counterterrorism And Article 5: Hammer Of The North Atlantic Or Paper Tiger?, David D. Ayliffe
ExpressO
This paper concerns the development of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's counterterrorism program. It seeks to analyze the legal implications of this development and the program's potential effectiveness. Specifically, the paper asserts that NATO's counterterrorism program is consistent with the drafting history of the North Atlantic Treaty and that Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty is sufficiently flexible to support future NATO counterterrorism missions.
Effects Of Flight Behaviour On Body Temperature And Kinematics During Inter-Male Mate Competition In The Solitary Desert Bee Centris Pallida, Stephen P. Roberts
Effects Of Flight Behaviour On Body Temperature And Kinematics During Inter-Male Mate Competition In The Solitary Desert Bee Centris Pallida, Stephen P. Roberts
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Body Temperatures and Kinematics Are Measured for Male Centris Pallida Bees Engaged in a Variety of Flight Behaviors (Hovering, Patrolling, Pursuit) at a Nest Aggregation Site in the Sonoran Desert. the Aim of the Study is to Test for Evidence of Thermoregulatory Variation in Convective Heat Loss and Metabolic Heat Production and to Assess the Mechanisms of Acceleration and Forward Flight in Field Conditions. Patrolling Males Have Slightly (1-3°C) Cooler Body Temperatures Than Hoverers, Despite Similar Wingbeat Frequencies and Larger Body Masses, suggesting that Convective Heat Loss is Likely to Be Greater during Patrolling Flight Than during Hovering. Comparisons of …
