C-Jun N-Terminal Kinase (Jnk) Is Required For Survival And Proliferation Of B-Lymphoma Cells, Murali Gururajan, Roger Chui, Anbu K. Karuppannan, Jiyuan Ke, C. Darrell Jennings, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Several primary murine and human B lymphomas and cell lines were found to constitutively express high levels of the activated form of c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), a member of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase family. Proliferation of murine B lymphomas CH31, CH12.Lx, BKS-2, and WEHI-231 and the human B lymphomas BJAB, RAMOS, RAJI, OCI-Ly7, and OCI-Ly10 was strongly inhibited by SP600125, an anthrapyrazolone inhibitor of JNK, in a dose-dependent manner. The lymphoma cells underwent apoptosis and arrested at the G2/M phase of cell cycle. Furthermore, JNK-specific small interfering RNA (siRNA) inhibited the growth of both murine and human B lymphomas. …

Deterring Roper’S Juveniles: Why Immature Criminal Youth Require The Death Penalty More Than Adults – A Law & Economics Approach, Moin A. Yahya Aug 2005

Deterring Roper’S Juveniles: Why Immature Criminal Youth Require The Death Penalty More Than Adults – A Law & Economics Approach, Moin A. Yahya

ExpressO

In Roper v. Simmons, the United States Supreme Court declared the death penalty for juveniles unconstitutional. It relied on three reasons, one of which concerns this article, namely the theory that juveniles are less culpable and deterrable than adults. The Court relied on the American Medical Association’s amicus brief which purported to show scientifically that juveniles had less developed brains than adults. The Court characterized juveniles as being risk-lovers who highly preferred the present over the future, who loved gains no matter how risky but did not care for losses, and who could not engage in proper cost-benefit analysis, because …

The Geography Of Climate Change Litigation: Implications For Transnational Regulatory Governance, Hari Osofsky Aug 2005

The Geography Of Climate Change Litigation: Implications For Transnational Regulatory Governance, Hari Osofsky

ExpressO

ABSTRACT: This article aims to forward the dialogue about transnational corporate regulation by mapping the power dynamics that infuse litigation over energy production’s externalities and their implications for sovereign regulatory authority. The piece’s core argument is that appropriately constraining the externalities of energy production demands a nuanced, spatial understanding of the relationship among governmental regulatory entities, corporations, and the other actors that influence them. Part II begins by considering the multi-layered regulatory dilemmas posed by the transnational energy production process, the uncertain status of corporations under international law, and the law and economics debate over appropriate and effective environmental regulation …

Efficacy Of Aircraft Mounted Lighting To Reduce Bird Strikes, Scott T. Philibin Aug 2005

Efficacy Of Aircraft Mounted Lighting To Reduce Bird Strikes, Scott T. Philibin

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

A question has lingered over the Aviation Industry for over 30 years. Can we improve the visibility of aircraft to birds so as to reduce the probability of bird aircraft collisions? At the outset, I want to make clear that reducing bird hazards to aircraft is a comprehensive and systemic problem which can be mitigated in part by active control of causative factors in and around airports. However, aircraft rapidly transition out of the airport boundary in a matter of seconds and are still transitioning miles away from the airport at altitudes where birds may still be commonly found. It …

Two Concepts Of Liberalism In Establishment Clause Jurisprudence, Kevin Pybas Aug 2005

Two Concepts Of Liberalism In Establishment Clause Jurisprudence, Kevin Pybas

ExpressO

The political theorist William Galston argues that the liberal political tradition contains two distinct strands of philosophical thought. One emphasizes the principle of autonomy, while the other stresses the principle of diversity. These principles, according to Galston, are in tension with each other and as guiding criterions lead to quite different public policies. Autonomy-centered liberalism seeks to promote autonomy or “individual self-direction”; it reflects a “commitment to sustained rational examination of self, others, and social practices.” As such, autonomy-centered liberals are generally suspicious of religious belief and seek to confine it to the private sphere. Diversity-centered liberalism, on the other …

The Transformation Of South African Private Law After Ten Years Of Democracy: The Role Of Torts (Delict) In The Consolidation Of Democracy, Christopher J. Roederer Aug 2005

The Transformation Of South African Private Law After Ten Years Of Democracy: The Role Of Torts (Delict) In The Consolidation Of Democracy, Christopher J. Roederer

ExpressO

Although the role of the private law has been largely ignored in studies of transitional justice, private law is a crucial component in South Africa’s transition/transformation. Contrary to the views of some commentators, the private law and delict in particular, were tainted by apartheid. Further, even if the private law of South Africa was not infected by the apartheid cancer, it acted as a carrier and facilitator of apartheid values and policies, perpetuating the inequities apartheid. While there is evidence of the cancer in apartheid case law the more serious problem was a failure of delict to progress under apartheid. …

Individuals, Ethics, And Empathy Of Mind, Nancy Cantor Aug 2005

Individuals, Ethics, And Empathy Of Mind, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

The Socratic question, "How should one live?" is a central motivating one for ethics.1 Today, I would like to consider three animating questions that fall within this concern:

• What are the challenges for an ethical person as a member of a community?

• What form do these challenges specifically take in our 21st-century society/world?

• What is the best way to tackle these challenges within university communities?

Opal Creek: The Framing Of A Policy Controversy, James Floyd Aug 2005

Opal Creek: The Framing Of A Policy Controversy, James Floyd

Dissertations and Theses

The denouement of conflict is essential in the process of crafting public policy. The settlement of clashes over who get what, who pays, and who benefits is a critical component of a process described as decision making in the public interest. However, in some cases, the process results in unresolved controversy rather than the formulation of public policy. This may result from too little time being allocated to problem setting because of a rush to find problem solutions.

Conflict arises in public disputes due to a mixture of interests and values by multiple parties and the expression of divergent views …

A Nested-Pcr With An Internal Amplification Control For The Detection And Differentiation Of Bartonella Henselae And B. Clarridgeiae: An Examination Of Cats In Trinidad, Joanne Rampersad, John D. Watkins, Michael S. Samlal, Raymond Deonanan, Shalini Ramsubeik, David Ammons Aug 2005

A Nested-Pcr With An Internal Amplification Control For The Detection And Differentiation Of Bartonella Henselae And B. Clarridgeiae: An Examination Of Cats In Trinidad, Joanne Rampersad, John D. Watkins, Michael S. Samlal, Raymond Deonanan, Shalini Ramsubeik, David Ammons

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Background

Bartonella species are bacterial blood parasites of animals capable of causing disease in both animals and man. Cat-Scratch Disease (CSD) in humans is caused mainly by Bartonella henselae and is acquired from the cat, which serves as a reservoir for the bacteria. A second species, B. clarridgeiae is also implicated in the disease. Diagnosis of Bartonellosis by culture requires a week or more of incubation on enriched media containing blood, and recovery is often complicated by faster growing contaminating bacteria and fungi. PCR has been explored as an alternative to culture for both the detection and species identification of …

How And Understanding Of The Second Personal Standpoint Can Change Our Understanding Of The Law: Hart's Unpublished Response To Exclusive Legal Positivism, Robin B. Kar Aug 2005

How And Understanding Of The Second Personal Standpoint Can Change Our Understanding Of The Law: Hart's Unpublished Response To Exclusive Legal Positivism, Robin B. Kar

ExpressO

This Article describes recent developments in moral philosophy on the “second personal standpoint,” and argues that they will have important ramifications for legal thought. Moral, legal and political thinkers have, for some time now, understood important distinctions between the first personal perspective (of deliberation) and the third personal perspective (of observation, cause and effect), and have plumbed these distinctions to great effect in their thought. This distinction is, in fact, implicit the law and economics movement’s “rational actor” model of decision, which currently dominates much legal academic thought. Recent developments in value theory due to philosopher Stephen Darwall suggest, however, …

Lost In Translation: The Economic Analysis Of Law In The United States And Europe, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt Aug 2005

Lost In Translation: The Economic Analysis Of Law In The United States And Europe, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt

ExpressO

In this essay, we examine the reasons why the economic analysis of law has not flourished in European countries as it has in the U.S. In particular, we focus on three European countries - the United Kingdom (U.K.), Germany, and France. We argue that differences in culture, the legal system and the academy have led to differing degrees of success of the law and economics movement in each country. We speculate that, although there is currently less interest in the economic analysis of the law in Europe than in the United States, European interest could dramatically increase if scholars adopt …

Parts-Based Object Detection Using Multiple Views, David Higgs Aug 2005

Parts-Based Object Detection Using Multiple Views, David Higgs

Theses

One of the most important problems in image understanding is robust object detection. Small changes in object appearance due to illumination, viewpoint, and occlusion can drastically change the performance of many object detection methods. Non-rigid object can be even more difficult to reliably detect. The unique contribution of this thesis was to extend the approach of parts-based object detection to include support for multiple viewing angles. Bayesian networks were used to integrate the parts detection of each view in a flexible manner, so that the experimental performance of each part detector could be incorporated into the decision. The detectors were …

Combating The Banality Of Evil: Portrayals Of The Literary Female Villain In Gã¼Nter Grass's Danziger Trilogie And Novella, Im Krebsgang., Joseph Ephraim Baumgarten Aug 2005

Combating The Banality Of Evil: Portrayals Of The Literary Female Villain In Gã¼Nter Grass's Danziger Trilogie And Novella, Im Krebsgang., Joseph Ephraim Baumgarten

Theses and Dissertations

In Günter Grass's Danzig Trilogy and novella, Im Krebsgang, an antagonistic female type makes a repeated appearance. She appears in the guise of Susi Kater and Luzie Rennwand in Die Blechtrommel, and as Tulla Pokriefke in the other works, Katz und Maus, Hundejahre, and Im Krebsgang. This antagonistic female type is not like other women in these works. A review of Le Deuxième Sexe by feminist Simone de Beauvoir reveals several crucial components contributing to woman's position in society. Most essentially, a woman's natural attributes and (dis)abilities and the conventions of society have enforced her historical submission to man. This …

Constructed Memories, Biffy Borg Aug 2005

Constructed Memories, Biffy Borg

Theses

Memories, like the gelatin that coats our photographs, affix themselves to precious family images. These photographs provide us with stories either remembered or retold. However, similar to the actual memories, the photographs only provide a partial story. A moment in time captured on film. Once the shutter clicks, once the moment takes place, it is gone, and those within the borders of the frame no longer exist. Once the moment is over, it begins to recede into memory. The preciseness of detail begins to mutate. Therefore, both the memory and image are suspect.

Through my thesis work, I explore this …

Chloroplast Biotechnology In Higher Plants: Expressing Antimicrobial Genes In The Plastid Genome, Tracey Ruhlman Aug 2005

Chloroplast Biotechnology In Higher Plants: Expressing Antimicrobial Genes In The Plastid Genome, Tracey Ruhlman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

While genetic improvement of susceptible crop species may enhance resistance to microbial pathogens and facilitate reduced pesticide load, the possibility for transmission of novel genes to wild relatives has hampered acceptance of GM crops in some markets. Chloroplast transformation presents an attractive alternative to nuclear transformation and offers the potential to ameliorate these environmental concerns. Most agronomically important species exhibit maternal inheritance of organellar genomes which eliminates the threat of transgene escape through pollen. Gene silencing is absent due to site directed, single copy insertion by homologous recombination. Foreign proteins can accumulate to high levels (up to 50% of total …

Comparing Different Levels Of Interactivity In The Visualization Of Spatio-Temporal Data, Samara Ebinger Aug 2005

Comparing Different Levels Of Interactivity In The Visualization Of Spatio-Temporal Data, Samara Ebinger

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Internet and other advances in technology have dramatically affected cartography in recent decades and yet these new capabilities have not been adequately evaluated for effectiveness. Are dynamic maps more effective than traditional static paper maps in allowing users to visualize spatio-temporal patterns? How important is a higher level of interactivity in visualizing data? Which format is preferred? To examine these questions, human subject tests were conducted to evaluate different levels of interactivity as represented by 1) a static paper map series; 2) an animated map with 'VCR'-type controls; and 3) a toggle map featuring an interactive temporal legend. Results …

Power System Fault Detection Using Conductor Dynamics, Jeff Dicharry Aug 2005

Power System Fault Detection Using Conductor Dynamics, Jeff Dicharry

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Power system fault detection is conventionally achieved using current and potential measurements. An alternate and unconventional form of protective relaying is feasible using rigid bus conductor motion as the means of detection. The research presented focuses on the detection of power system faults using visual displacement of conductor spans. Substation rigid bus conductor motion is modeled using dual spring-mass systems for accurate representation of conductor response to electromagnetic forces generated during system faults. Bundled rigid conductors have advantages including detection independent of system load currents and improved ability to detect polyphase and single phase faults. The dynamic motion of the …

Electrodisinfection Of Municipal Wastewater Effluent, Mark Peterson Aug 2005

Electrodisinfection Of Municipal Wastewater Effluent, Mark Peterson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

To avoid the spread of disease from sewage treatment effluents, pathogenic microorganisms present must be destroyed by one or a combination of disinfection methods. Chlorine remains the predominant disinfectant used although it consumes considerable amounts of energy and has associated exposure risks from production, transportation and storage of this poisonous gas. In addition to bacteria and other objectionable microorganisms, color, suspended and colloidal solids also require removal from water for reuse. Aluminum and iron additions have been used to coagulate and remove non-settleable solids. By electrically dissolving aluminum to form solids-bridging aluminum hydroxide, the water itself can also be disinfected …

Interpretive Signs Designed To Trigger Naturalist Intelligence At Two American Zoos, Martha Bryant Aug 2005

Interpretive Signs Designed To Trigger Naturalist Intelligence At Two American Zoos, Martha Bryant

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

An investigation of interpretive graphics was conducted in 2005 at two mid-sized AZA-accredited zoos, Lowry Park Zoo, Tampa, Florida and Knoxville Zoo, Knoxville, Tennessee. The Lowry Park Zoo study investigated signs at a red-tailed hawk and sandhill crane exhibit. Combination signs and wordless signs were more effective helping visitors see animals, increasing holding time, and number of engagements than treatments of no signs, or signs with words only. A second study, at Knoxde Zoo, tested combination and wordless signs in a children's zoo, investigating 31 signs at a 3.5-acre exhibit. Comparisons of visitors seeing the animals/using interactive exhibit elements, holding …

Water Quality Study Of Southshore Of Lake Pontchartrain, Maria Carolina Martinez Fernandez Aug 2005

Water Quality Study Of Southshore Of Lake Pontchartrain, Maria Carolina Martinez Fernandez

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 2004, a field sampling study was initiated along the southern shoreline area of Lake Pontchartrain in Jefferson Parish, specifically, around Bonnabel Canal (Pumping Station No.1) to identify the effect of urban stormwater discharges on Lake Pontchartrain and to simulate the plume patterns from the Bonnabel Canal. Sixteen sampling stations were selected along the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Under dry weather conditions Fecal Coliform values exceeded the limit of 200 MPN/100mL at 3 of 16 stations. Fecal Coliform counts were found to be "wet" weather-dependent and unsuitable for primary contact recreation for at least three to four days following …

Sex And Virtual Reality: Posture And Motion Sickness, Moira Flanagan Aug 2005

Sex And Virtual Reality: Posture And Motion Sickness, Moira Flanagan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

It is well established that exposure to virtual motion environments (VME) can elicit postural instability (PI) in addition to motion sickness (MS). While research has found sex differences in motion sickness, the results of experimental studies are equivocal regarding these differences, and previous studies utilizing VME have failed to address the factor of sex differences in terms of hormonal fluctuations, which may also be instrumental in behavioral responses to VME, such as PI. The intent of this investigation was to determine whether exposure to VME, during various phases of the menstrual cycle (premenstrual, permenstrual, ovulation) would reveal sex differences in …

Does The Stria Terminalis Carry Information Concerning Feeding And Body Weight Regulation From The Posterodorsal Amygdala To The Hypothalamus?, Bethany Layla Rollins Aug 2005

Does The Stria Terminalis Carry Information Concerning Feeding And Body Weight Regulation From The Posterodorsal Amygdala To The Hypothalamus?, Bethany Layla Rollins

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated body weight gain in rats after lesions to the posterodorsal amygdala. Likewise, a recent study also found increased body weight as a result of knife-cuts of the stria terminalis, just as it exits the amygdala. In the present study, these findings were extended and previous studies replicated by producing 1) lesions in the stria terminalis as it travels dorsally through the brain, 2) coronal knife-cuts anterior to the ventromedial hypothalamus, and 3) axon-sparing lesions of the posterodorsal amygdala using ibotenic acid. Both lesions of the dorsal stria terminalis and coronal knife-cuts anterior to the ventromedial hypothalamus …
