Breeding Ecology Of White-Winged Scoters On The Yukon Flats, Alaska, David Elliot Safine Aug 2005

Breeding Ecology Of White-Winged Scoters On The Yukon Flats, Alaska, David Elliot Safine

Biological Sciences

Breeding bird surveys indicate a long-term decline in the numbers of scoters (Melanitta sp.) in North America. My objectives were to estimate survival of nests, ducklings, and adult female White-winged Scoters (Melanitta fusca) breeding on the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, 2002-2004, within their primary breeding range. I measured habitat variables at nest sites and random sites in the study area to characterize nest habitat selection, and investigated breeding incidence with a laboratory analysis of circulating concentrations of the plasma yolk precursors vitellogenin (VTG) and very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL). The low hen and nest survival rates I observed combined …

Factors Affecting Body Mass Of Prefledging Emperor Geese, Bryce Cameron Lake Aug 2005

Factors Affecting Body Mass Of Prefledging Emperor Geese, Bryce Cameron Lake

Biological Sciences

Body mass of pre fledging geese has important implications for fitness and population dynamics. To address whether interspecific competition for forage was broadly relevant to prefledging emperor geese, I investigated the factors affecting body mass at three locations across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska. From 1990 - 2004, densities of cackling geese more than doubled and were 2-5x higher than densities of emperor geese, which were relatively constant over time. During 2003 - 2004, body mass of emperor geese increased with net above-ground primary productivity (NAPP) and grazing lawn extent and declined with interspecific densities of geese (combined density of emperor …

Changes In Embryonic Development, Hatching, And Zoeae Of Snow Crab With Variation In Incubation Temperature, Joel Benjamin Webb Aug 2005

Changes In Embryonic Development, Hatching, And Zoeae Of Snow Crab With Variation In Incubation Temperature, Joel Benjamin Webb

Fisheries

The effect of incubation temperature on duration of embryonic development and morphology, weight and energetic content of post-hatch zoeae was described for snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio, from the eastern Bering Sea held at -1, 0, 1, 3, and 6° C in the laboratory from collection to hatch. The mean incubation time increased with decreasing temperature by 32% (113 d) between 6 and -1° C. Extrusion success of females at 6° C was lower versus 0 or 3° C, but the duration of hatching did not vary significantly with incubation temperature. A one-year cycle of embryo incubation was observed, indicating that …

Kelp Beds As Fish And Invertebrate Habitat In Southeastern Alaska, Elizabeth L. Calvert Aug 2005

Kelp Beds As Fish And Invertebrate Habitat In Southeastern Alaska, Elizabeth L. Calvert

Fisheries

Throughout the temperate marine regime, the shallow subtidal is dominated by rocky reefs and algal assemblages. The ecological significance of high-latitude, cold-water kelp systems is poorly understood particularly for Alaska. Two large-scale experiments conducted near Juneau, Alaska were designed to study fish and invertebrate assemblages in regard to (1) canopy forming Nereocystis luetkeana (1500 m² manipulations) and (2) sub-canopy forming Laminaria bongardiana (600 m²). Fish and invertebrates were quantified using Standard Monitoring Units for the Recruitment of Fish (SMURFs), light traps, and visual surveys. The canopy kelp experiment revealed significantly greater abundance (X=0.57 fish/SMURF; X=0.28 fish/SMURF) and biomass (X=0.95 g/SMURF; …

And Now A Punch, Kick, And Slap From Our Sponsors: A Content Analysis Of Aggression In Network Television Commercials., Robert C. Carpenter Aug 2005

And Now A Punch, Kick, And Slap From Our Sponsors: A Content Analysis Of Aggression In Network Television Commercials., Robert C. Carpenter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While the violent content of television news and entertainment programs has been widely documented, commercials have been rarely scrutinized for aggressive traits. This study sought to improve on this situation and gather additional data about television commercial violence. Because commercials make up 25 percent of each network hour of programming, the potential for exposure to violent content may be even greater than previously believed. To explore this issue, a content analysis was conducted of 2,162 prime-time television commercials on three major networks: ABC, CBS, and NBC. The sample was coded with a scheme developed by Anu Mustonen and Lea Pulkkinen …

Potential Energy Surface Around The Tropylium Ion., Kenneth Wayne Bullins Aug 2005

Potential Energy Surface Around The Tropylium Ion., Kenneth Wayne Bullins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The formation of the tropylium ion, C7H7+, in the mass spectrum of toluene is a chemical process that has been studied extensively in the past. The advances in computational power of personal computers have made the investigation of the pathway to form this ion and its subsequent decomposition feasible at a fairly high level of theory. The calculations that we performed were at the HF/6-31G (d, p) and the B3LYP/6-311++G (2d) levels. This work will show areas of the potential energy surface around the highly symmetric tropylium ion to give a glance of possible mechanisms …

Images And Voices From The Cumberland Mountains: Surface Coal Mining And The Evolution Of Appalshop's Documentary Activism., Katherine Elisabeth Schram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the early 1970s, Appalshop, a regional film workshop in Whitesburg, Kentucky, has been examining social, economic, and environmental issues important to the people of Appalachia. Appalshop’s goal has always been to give a voice to a community that is often stereotyped and misunderstood by the media. Since its creation, Appalshop has devoted ample attention to the practice of surface mining, its potential consequences to the region, and most importantly, local opposition to the practice. While Appalshop’s early surface mining documentaries are focused on educating the general public about the issue, its later documentaries appeal to viewers’ emotions and develop …

Cell Toxicity And Uptake Of Rrr-Alpha-Tocopheryl Polyethylene Glycol 1000 Succinate (Tpgs) By Various Cell Ines In Vitro., Christelle Komguem Kamga

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research focused on investigating and comparing the cytotoxicity and cellular uptake of RRR-alpha-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS, with that of alpha-tocopheryl succinate (α-TS). Both TPGS and α-TS are water-soluble forms of vitamin E with important clinical applications. Cytotoxicity assays with RAW 264.7 and LNCaP cells incubated overnight with TPGS or α-TS at concentrations ≥ 12.4 μM suggest that α-TS is more cytotoxic than TPGS. Macrophages were found to be more sensitive than LNCaP cells when treated with similar concentrations of α-TS. For both cell lines, most of the TPGS or α-TS taken up remained esterified after 24 hours. Our …

Aggression: Relationships With Sex, Gender Role Identity, And Gender Role Stress., Robin L. Leonard Aug 2005

Aggression: Relationships With Sex, Gender Role Identity, And Gender Role Stress., Robin L. Leonard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sex, gender-role identity, and gender-role stress were assessed in terms of their relationship to observed gender differences in self-reported aggression. Physical and verbal aggression were explored, as well as the affective component of anger and cognitive component of hostility. The role of emotional intelligence in these relationships was also evaluated, as a possible correlate to the gender-related variables. The results indicated that both gender-role stress and gender-role identification were significantly associated with all components of aggression; however, only physical aggression was related to sex. Emotional intelligence was linked to sex and gender-role identity but not with gender-role stress. The results …

Trapped In Bluebeard's Chamber: Rose Terry Cooke And Nineteenth-Century "Desperate Housewives.", Bridget Renee Garland Aug 2005

Trapped In Bluebeard's Chamber: Rose Terry Cooke And Nineteenth-Century "Desperate Housewives.", Bridget Renee Garland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Often overlooked in the study of nineteenth-century American literature, the New England writer Rose Terry Cooke elicited great popular appeal during the peak of her career. The admiration Cooke received from her readers and fellow writers compels one to question Cooke’s present-day obscurity. Cooke’s fiction and poetry seem inconsistent with the attitudes she express in her non-fiction, particularly concerning religion and women’s suffrage. She portrays women in miserable marriages, desperately looking for an escape. These “brides of Bluebeard” find different ways to cope with their predicament. While most never truly escape, many use (1) religious devotion, (2) masochism, and (3) …

The Tension Between Art And Science In Historical Writing., Michael Lee Depew Aug 2005

The Tension Between Art And Science In Historical Writing., Michael Lee Depew

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A perennial question in the philosophy of history is whether history is a science or an art. This thesis contests that this question constitutes a false dichotomy, limiting the discussion in such a way as to exclude other possibilities of understanding the nature of the historical task.

The speculative philosophies of Augustine, Kant, and Marx; the critical philosophies of Ranke, Comte along with the later positivist, and the historical idealist such as Collingwood will be surveyed. History is then examined along side art to discuss not only the similarities but, the differences.

Major similarities—narrative presentation, emplotation, and the selective nature …

Trash And Water: Managing On-Airport Wildlife Attractants At Paine Field, Washington, Matthew R. Stevens, Laurence M. Schafer, Brian E. Washburn

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

Identifying and addressing land uses on or near airports that attract wildlife hazardous to aviation, such as refuse and water management facilities, is an important component of an integrated approach to reduce wildlife-aircraft collisions. Similar to most airports, Snohomish County Airport (Paine Field) has recently been involved with construction of on-airfield stormwater management structures. In addition, Snohomish County built a new trash-transfer facility on airport property during 2002-2003. The airport, USDA Wildlife Services, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provided considerable input into the design and landscaping around the transfer facility and in the redesign of a stormwater detention pond/wetland …

Percentage Of Wildlife Strikes Reported And Species Identified Under A Voluntary Reporting System, Sandra E. Wright, Richard A. Dolbeer

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

Reporting of wildlife strikes with civil aircraft in the USA is voluntary but strongly encouraged by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through Advisory Circulars and FAA publications. The National Wildlife Strike Database contained 59,196 strike reports for civil aircraft, 1990-2004. An initial analysis of independent strike data from an eastern USA airport in 1994 indicated that less than 20% of strikes were actually reported to the FAA for inclusion in the National Wildlife Strike Database. To obtain an improved estimate of the percent of strikes reported, we obtained 14 sets of wildlife strike data maintained by three airlines and three …
