Organization Management Journal

One of the greatest challenges faced by new professors and those aspiring to become members of the academy is the consistent need to illustrate organizational behavior concepts to undergraduate students (Hunt, 2001). Most of today’s undergraduate population find themselves encased in a world permeated with fashion, music and little understanding of business principles. For this reason, it is incumbent upon business faculty members to continually create new and inspiring teaching interventions that illustrate business principles and concepts in action. From 12 Angry Men to The Brady Bunch, management faculty have enhanced the learning process of under-graduates with cinema that highlights …

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Background: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) alters both concentrations of neurotransmitters or their metabolites and functional activity of central nervous system regions dysregulated in mood disorders. An open trial has suggested efficacy.

Methods: This 10-week, acute, randomized, controlled, masked trial compared adjunctive VNS with sham treatment in 235 outpatients with nonpsychotic major depressive disorder (n = 210) or nonpsychotic, depressed phase, bipolar disorder (n = 25). In the current episode, participants had not responded adequately to between two and six research-qualified medication trials. A two-week, single-blind recovery period (no stimulation) and then 10 weeks of masked active or …

Hormone Research As An Exemplar Of Underdetermination, P.D. Magnus Sep 2005

Hormone Research As An Exemplar Of Underdetermination, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Debates about the underdetermination of theory by data often turn on specific examples. Many cases are invoked often enough that they become familiar, even well-worn. Here I consider one such commonplace: the connection between prenatal hormone levels and gender-linked childhood behavior. Since Helen Longino's original discussion of this case a decade-and-a-half ago, it has become become one of the stock examples of underdetermination. However, the case is not genuinely underdetermined. We can easily imagine a possible experiment to decide the question. The fact that we would not perform this experiment is a moral, rather than epistemic, point. Further, I argue …

Targeted Complement Inhibition By C3d Recognition Ameliorates Tissue Injury Without Apparent Increase In Susceptibility To Infection, Carl Atkinson, Hongbin Song, Bo Lu, Fei Qiao, Tara A. Burns, V. Michael Holers, George C. Tsokos, Stephen Tomlinson

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Previous studies indicate a pivotal role for complement in mediating both local and remote injury following ischemia and reperfusion of the intestine. Here, we report on the use of a mouse model of intestinal ischemia/ reperfusion injury to investigate the strategy of targeting complement inhibition to sites of complement activation by linking an iC3b/C3dg-binding fragment of mouse complement receptor 2 (CR2) to a mouse complement-inhibitory protein, Crry. We show that the novel CR2-Crry fusion protein targets sites of local and remote (lung) complement activation following intestinal ischemia and reperfusion injury and that CR2- Crry requires a 10-fold lower dose than …

Mourning Dove National Strategic Harvest Management Plan Sep 2005

Mourning Dove National Strategic Harvest Management Plan

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Introduction

This document provides a long-range vision for improving mourning dove management through the development of predictive harvest strategies. The purposes of this plan are to: (1) promote the concept of coordinated management of mourning doves to insure uniformity of regulatory action and equitable conservation across the species range in the 3 Mourning Dove Management Units; (2) acknowledge the need to recognize demographic differences among management units; and, (3) acknowledge that the current harvest management system, and the knowledge base supporting it, needs improvement. Future recommendations will be made regarding management unit-specific harvest strategies and initiation of new, long-term monitoring …

Thoreau’S Legacy Revisited, Charles Yaple Sep 2005

Thoreau’S Legacy Revisited, Charles Yaple

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

It appears we humans are slow to learn some lessons. Recent, and greatly deserved, attention given to Richard Louv’s new book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature- Deficit Disorder (see book review, p. 19) prompts one to recall prophetic words penned by Henry David Thoreau more than 140 years ago. He had much to say concerning what happens when a culture divorces itself from nature. The summer, 1995 issue of Taproot featured an article, Thoreau’s Legacy, that examined the 19th century philosopher’s thoughts regarding healthy human relationship with the natural world. That article is presented here …

A Scientific And Technial Review Of The Use Of Bioremediation As A Clean Up Technique At The Savannah River Site, Harambee House, Inc., Mildred Mcclain

Harambee House, Inc.

This report provides an overview of the fundamentals and field applications of in situ bioremediation in contaminated soil and groundwater. Bioremediation has been presented to the impacted communities as a technology that is currently being used and tested at the Savannah River Site (SRS). The primary focus this report explain bioremediation as a clean-up technology and analyze what role the technology will play in the new accelerated clean up strategy at SRS as approved by Environmental Management at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The objective is to understand how bioremediation is being used at SRS for clean up.

The Use Of Transcriptomics To Address Questions In Behaviour: Production Of A Suppression Subtractive Hybridisation Library From Dominance Hierarchies Of Rainbow Trout, Lynne U. Sneddon, Javier Margareto, Andrew R. Cossins

Microarrays, or gene chips, are transforming the way that gene expression is measured by allowing us to determine the expression of thousands of genes from a sample. This gives immense power to examine gene expression on a global scale within individual animals and between animals. The scope for analysing complex animal functions at the molecular level is within our grasp. Relatively few studies have examined complex behaviours and correlated them with gene expression in the central nervous system. Here, we review the use of microarray technology in the dissection of behaviour and focus specifically on dominance status. A cDNA library …

A Five Year Management Strategy For Recreational Fishing On The South Coast. The Minister For Fisheries' Decision In Response To The Final Report Of The South Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group., Jon Ford (Minister For Fisheries; The Kimberley, Pilbara And Gascoyne)

Fisheries Management Papers

After careful consideration of the South Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group’s recommendations and the wide range of issues raised in submissions, I have made my decisions in respect to the future management arrangements for recreational fishing in South Coast Region. I believe the new management arrangements which will be implemented in 1 January 2006 will go a long way to protecting recreational fishing quality and meeting the long term needs for the sustainable management of recreational fishing. I did note that some of the most pressing concerns raised during public meetings, and in submissions, related to the interaction between the …

Proposals For Community Discussion : A Quality Future For The Recreational Marron Fishery : A Five-Year Draft Strategy To Ensure The Long-Term Sustainability Of The Marron Fishery, Recreational Freshwater Fisheries Stakeholder Sub-Committee

Fisheries Management Papers

While some of the factors threatening the future of the marron fishery can be managed via traditional fisheries controls, many fall outside of the Department of Fisheries’ jurisdiction and require a ‘whole of Government’ approach to management. To help ensure a quality future for the recreational marron fishery, the Recreational Freshwater Fisheries Stakeholder Sub-committee (RFFSS) has now developed a set of draft management proposals designed to form the basis of a five-year management plan for the fishery.
