The Constitutionally Inspired Approaches To Police Accountability For Violence Against Women In The U.S. And South Africa: Conservation Versus Transformation, Christopher J. Roederer
ExpressO
In the summer of 2005, the United States Supreme Court in Castle Rock v. Gonzales and the South African Constitutional Court in N.K. v. Minister of Safety & Security overturned decisions from their appellate courts. N.K. drew on the Constitutional Court decision in Carmichele v. Minister of Safety & Security. All three were torts cases involving the duties of the police, their accountability to the public, and rights of women to be free from violence, and each depended on the respective court’s interpretation of its constitution for resolution. This article focuses on the comparison, or rather, the sharp contrast between, …

Biophysics Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Periodic Z-Axis Acceleration Of Abdominal Compression At Aortic Resonant Frequencies, Charles F. Babbs
Biophysics Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation With Periodic Z-Axis Acceleration Of Abdominal Compression At Aortic Resonant Frequencies, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Periodic z-axis acceleration (pGz)-CPR involves oscillating motion of a whole patient in the head-to-foot dimension on a mechanized table. The method is able to sustain blood flow and long-term survival during and after prolonged cardiac arrest in anesthetized pigs. However, the exact mechanism by which circulation of blood is created has remained unknown. Objectives: To explain the hemodynamic mechanism of pGz-CPR and to suggest theoretically useful improvements. Method: Computer modeling using a hybrid analytical-numerical approach, based upon Newton’s second law of motion for fluid columns in the aorta and vena cavae, Ohm’s law for resistive flow through vascular beds, and …

Structure Elucidation Of Bioactive Compounds Isolated From Endophytes Of Alstonia Scholaris And Acmena Graveolens, Nicholas James Hundley
Structure Elucidation Of Bioactive Compounds Isolated From Endophytes Of Alstonia Scholaris And Acmena Graveolens, Nicholas James Hundley
Theses and Dissertations
Alstonia scholaris is an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia and Australia. It is commonly used as a medicinal plant throughout these regions. In the present study, an endophyte of the genus Xylaria was isolated from a stem of Alstonia scholaris, its mycelia and exudate extracted, and the extract assayed for growth inhibition of HeLa cancer cells in vitro. Several known compounds were isolated and identified based on NMR, infrared, and mass spectral data. The compounds identified are 19,20-epoxycytochalasin C; 19,20epoxycytochalasin D; and xylobovide. Two other compounds, fusaric acid and dehydrofusaric acid, were discovered in an endophyte of the Hypocreales …

Constitutions have many dimensions. These dimensions include at least the following:
• an economic constitution in the sense of a set of rules for exchange of value and authority,
• an interfunctional constitution that allows for the integration of various social values,
• a political constitution that reflects the cultural and democratic integrity of a group of people,
• a legal and judicial constitution that provides rules for the making of other rules, and for determining supremacy and the scope of judicial application of rules,
• a human rights constitution that limits the sphere of governmental authority, and

Taxol-Stabilized Microtubules Can Position The Cytokinetic Furrow In Mammalian Cells, Katie Shannon, Julie C. Canman, C. Ben Moree, Jennifer S. Tirnauer, Edward D. Salmon
Taxol-Stabilized Microtubules Can Position The Cytokinetic Furrow In Mammalian Cells, Katie Shannon, Julie C. Canman, C. Ben Moree, Jennifer S. Tirnauer, Edward D. Salmon
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
How microtubules act to position the plane of cell division during cytokinesis is a topic of much debate. Recently, we showed that a subpopulation of stable microtubules extends past chromosomes and interacts with the cell cortex at the site of furrowing, suggesting that these stabilized microtubules may stimulate contractility. To test the hypothesis that stable microtubules can position furrows, we used taxol to rapidly suppress microtubule dynamics during various stages of mitosis in PtK1 cells. Cells with stabilized prometaphase or metaphase microtubule arrays were able to initiate furrowing when induced into anaphase by inhibition of the spindle checkpoint. In these …

Hemoglobin (Hb) is a Highly Conserved Protein that Provides a Vital Link between Environmental Oxygen and its Use And/or Storage within an Organism. While Ubiquitous among Vertebrates, Hb Occurs Frequently in Invertebrate Phyla as Well. Many Arthropod Species Use the Copper-Binding Pigment Hemocyanin, But Unique in This Phylum Are the Branchiopod Crustaceans, Which Express Hb. Branchiopod Hb Concentration and Structure Are Exquisitely Sensitive to Environmental Oxygen Availability. Hemoglobin Concentration and Oxygen-Binding Affinity Increase with Decreasing Oxygen Tension in Daphnia, Artemia and Triops. the Change in Binding Affinity is Attributed to Differential Hb Subunit Expression in Daphnia and Artemia But Remains …

Species are redescribed and information about geographic and phenology, biology, and larvae is provided.
Water Resources Policy Issues In Illinois, Christopher L. Lant
Water Resources Policy Issues In Illinois, Christopher L. Lant
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
Illinois is uniquely blessed with fresh water resources. Hundreds of miles from the sea, it is in Illinois that the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway connects with the Mississippi-Ohio River system via the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Illinois River through the heart of the state. The navigable Wabash, Missouri and Tennessee Rivers also border Illinois or terminate at its borders giving Illinois superb overall waterbased transportation access exceeded in tonnage shipped among U.S. states by only Alaska and Louisiana. Notwithstanding the serious drought Illinois is suffering in 2005, Illinois receives abundant and reliable precipitation, under the current climatic …

Typos get attention--negative attention--like a blemish on the tip of your nose on prom night. But there is a difference between our blemishes and our typos: while our blemishes may seem more prominent to us than to others, our eyes usually slip right past our own typos. This column presents some techniques for detecting and correcting these errors.

Feeding Corn To Beef Cows, Cody Wright
Feeding Corn To Beef Cows, Cody Wright
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
In many western cattle operations, forages have traditionally been considered the most practical feedstuffs for wintering beef cows. However, in certain situations, the nutrient content of standing or harvested forages may be inadequate to meet the nutritional requirements of the beef cow for maintenance, gestation, or lactation. The availability of standing or harvested forages also may be limited, especially during drought years and(or) severe winters when the cost of medium- to low-quality forages may reach $80 to $100 per ton. Feeding corn grain may represent an economically viable alternative in each of these scenarios.

SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Fusarium head blight, also called scab, is a disease of many small grain crops including wheat, barley, and rye. Oats can also be affected but generally with less damage. Scab is caused by the fungus Fusarium. Several species of Fusarium can cause the disease, but far and away the most common in South Dakota is Fusarium graminearum. This is the same fungus that causes Gibberella stalk rot in corn. When F. graminearum infections occurs in corn ears, the disease is referred to as Gibberella ear rot; it does not arrest kernel development. Generally, warm and wet conditions at wheat flowering …
