Assessment Of Human Health Risks From Chemically Contaminated Lake Fishes In Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, David V. Grimes, Dimitra Bobori, Rob Hale, Jennifer Jones

Virginia Journal of Science

Objectives were to conduct screening level surveys of locally consumed fish tissues in vicinities of two lakes (Kastoria and Pamvotis) in Greece to determine the presence of halogenated organic compounds and determine carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human health risks associated with the consumption of sampled fish tissues. Results estimate the Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risks (ILCR) and Hazard Index (HI) values for the two local populations using site-specific population data. These results were compared to analyses conducted using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency default values in an effort to determine the applicability of USEPA default values to assessments of risks in non U.S. …

To The Max: Embodying Intersections In Dark Angel, Lorna Jowett Oct 2005

To The Max: Embodying Intersections In Dark Angel, Lorna Jowett

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Dark Angel is often classed with other television shows featuring female action heroes (such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Alias) but I argue that it exhibits a more than usual emphasis on the body of its female protagonist and that this is integral to its use of science fiction and other genres to mediate a politicised postfeminist representation of gender. The science fiction genre, it is often argued, arises directly out of Gothic fictions such as Frankenstein, and in Dark Angel the protagonist, Max, is a post-modern Frankenstein's monster, blurring boundaries between human and monster, subject and …

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Derivatives And Dipeptidyl Peptidase-Iv Inhibitors. New Hope For The Treatment Of Type-2 Diabetes, Mohamed A. Al-Omar, Mohammed N. Al-Arifi

Saudi Medical Journal

Glucagon-like peptide GLP-1 is an endogenous insulinotropic/glucagonostatic hormone that acts in a self-limiting mechanism. It is a multifunctional hormone that leads to insulin release stimulation, liver glucagon breakdown suppression, upregulation of islet cell proliferation, and neogenesis and retardation of gastric emptying. The short half-life and high renal clearance due to degradation via dipeptidyl peptidase-IV DPP-IV, and active glomerular filtration rate make this hormone ineffectual as an exogenous agent. More stable and long acting GLP-1 analogues and DPP-1 inhibitors have been developed with promising clinical value for the treatment of type-2 diabetes. The GLP-1 derivatives have the advantage of decreasing body …

Intravenous Polyethylene Glycol Inhibits The Loss Of Cerebral Cells After Brain Injury, Andrew O. Koob, Bradley S. Duerstock, Charles F. Babbs, Yinlong Sun, Richard B. Borgens Oct 2005

Intravenous Polyethylene Glycol Inhibits The Loss Of Cerebral Cells After Brain Injury, Andrew O. Koob, Bradley S. Duerstock, Charles F. Babbs, Yinlong Sun, Richard B. Borgens

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

We have tested the effectiveness of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to restore the integrity of neuronal membranes after mechanical damage secondary to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) produced by a standardized head injury model in rats. We provide additional detail on the standardization of this model, particularly the use and storage of foam bedding that serves to both support the animal during the impact procedure and to dampen the acceleration of the brass weight. Further, we employed a dye exclusion technique using ethidium bromide (EB; quantitative evaluation) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP; qualitative evaluation). Both have been successfully used previously to evaluate …

A Dose-Response Curve For The Negative Bias Pressure Of An Intrathoracic Pressure Regulator During Cpr, Charles F. Babbs, Demetris Yannopoulos Oct 2005

A Dose-Response Curve For The Negative Bias Pressure Of An Intrathoracic Pressure Regulator During Cpr, Charles F. Babbs, Demetris Yannopoulos

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

An intrathoracic pressure regulator (ITPR) is a device that can be added to the external end of an endotracheal tube to create controlled negative airway pressure between positive pressure ventilations. The resulting downward bias of the airway pressure baseline promotes increased venous return and enhanced circulation during CPR and also during hypovolemic shock. In the present study we exercised a mathematical model of the human cardiopulmonary system, including airways, lungs, a 4 chambered heart, great vessels, peripheral vascular beds, and the biomechanics of chest compression and recoil, to determine the relationship between systemic perfusion pressure during CPR and the value …

Optimal Control Theory Applied To A Difference Equation Model Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Eunok Jung, Charles F. Babbs, Suzanne Lenhart, Vladimir A. Protopoescu Oct 2005

Optimal Control Theory Applied To A Difference Equation Model Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Eunok Jung, Charles F. Babbs, Suzanne Lenhart, Vladimir A. Protopoescu

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To apply the mathematical techniques of optimal control theory (OCT) to a validated model of the human circulation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), so as to discover improved waveforms for chest compression and decompression that maximize the systemic perfusion pressure (SPP). Methods: The human circulatory system is represented by seven difference equations, which describe the pressure changes in systemic vascular compartments caused by chest compression. The forcing term is the intrathoracic pressure generated by the external chest compression, which is taken as the “control” variable for the system. The optimum waveform of this forcing pressure as a function of time, …

An Analysis Of A Finite Element Human Brain In Low Speed Rear Impact Automobile Collision Comparison, Model Development And Study Using Tno Rear Impact Dummy, Mangesh S. Kadam Oct 2005

An Analysis Of A Finite Element Human Brain In Low Speed Rear Impact Automobile Collision Comparison, Model Development And Study Using Tno Rear Impact Dummy, Mangesh S. Kadam

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

According to the National Safety Council, rear-end collisions are the most common types of collisions with approximately two and a half million cases reported every year. Crash tests indicate a change of vehicle velocity of 4km/h (2.5 mph) may produce occupant symptoms. Vehicle damage may not occur until 14-15km/h (8.7 mph) (Davis CG, 1998). Occupants, in rear-end vehicle impacts sustain a motion associated with whiplash, where the head snaps backwards quickly, resulting in linear and/or angular acceleration forces acting on the brain. This angular motion tends to subject the brain to shear deformations from rapid rotation. This study is a …

Support For A Delivery Train Based Material Handling Mechanism, Sai P. Boyedapu Oct 2005

Support For A Delivery Train Based Material Handling Mechanism, Sai P. Boyedapu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Modeling a delivery train system is more challenging than traditional forklift systems as the delivery train model consists of a tugger, cart and a controller that combine to deliver materials within a manufacturing plant. Also, the decision logic for selection of carts and tuggers, joining of loads to particular delivery trains is more complicated than forklift systems. Simulation software such as Arena, Automod and Flexsim do not provide direct support for modeling delivery train systems.

In this thesis, an object-oriented, platform and language independent model of a delivery train was designed. The model was then implemented as an extension to …

Chromosomal Localization Of The Islet Neogenesis Associated Protein (Ingap) Gene In Syrian Hamster By Tyramide Signal Amplification-Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (Tsa-Fish), Sallie A. Smith Oct 2005

Chromosomal Localization Of The Islet Neogenesis Associated Protein (Ingap) Gene In Syrian Hamster By Tyramide Signal Amplification-Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (Tsa-Fish), Sallie A. Smith

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Diabetes mellitus is a group of conditions characterized by hyperglycemia due to an inability to produce or properly utilize insulin. The majority of cases fall into two categories, Type I and Type 2. Type I results from the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells of the islets. The beta cells are the exclusive source of insulin and the patient becomes entirely dependent on exogenous insulin to survive. Patients with Type 2 are distinguished by insulin resistance, a condition that develops due to the inability of the body to effectively use the insulin being produced. The β-cells gradually lose their ability to …

Computational Analysis And Validation Of The Hans Head And Neck Support, Kapil Tyagi Oct 2005

Computational Analysis And Validation Of The Hans Head And Neck Support, Kapil Tyagi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

One of the major causes of racing fatalities is basilar skull fracture from excessive head motions and neck loading in a frontal impact. There are many head/neck restraints available in the market but HANS head and neck support has proved to be the most efficient one in sled testing. This paper evaluates and compares the performance of the HANS device in MAthematical DYnamic MOdel (MADYMO) software with the sled testing. The tests were conducted for the frontal impact motions, with a crash pulse of 45 G's.

The goal of the tests was to evaluate the performance of HANS without the …

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of concurrent tasks on postural sway in children.

Methods: Nineteen fourth-grade students, while standing on a balance platform, were asked to stand still, count backward, and read second-grade level sentences. The AMTI Accusway System was used to calculate the length of center of pressure path (LCOP), sway range (SR), and variability (SV) in mediolateral (ML) and anteroposterior (AP) directions of sway.

Results: Analysis of variance revealed a main effect of cognitive task condition for SR-AP, SR-ML, SV-AP, and SV-ML. Post hoc comparisons revealed lower values of those four dependent …

Embracing Edutainment With Interactive E-Learning Tools, Robert D. Williamson, Ellen P. Smoak Oct 2005

Embracing Edutainment With Interactive E-Learning Tools, Robert D. Williamson, Ellen P. Smoak

Journal of Extension

Advances in technology are changing how people access data. We are living in an Internet Revolution that will have major impacts on the lives of people. Personal computers (PCs) are the front-runners; they serve as a lifeline for some and a vital household tool for others. In many ways, however, the emerging technology is compelling Extension practitioners to compete with private enterprise and other educational institutions. Unlike synchronous and site-based learning, people can use e-learning tools wherever they are "24/7" year round. Among other things, the products can be "edutaining" for many learners.

Children’S Play In Cross-Cultural Perspective: A New Look At The Six Cultures Study , Carolyn P. Edwards Oct 2005

Children’S Play In Cross-Cultural Perspective: A New Look At The Six Cultures Study , Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

A qualitative and quantitative reanalysis of the Six Cultures data on children’s play, collected in the 1950s, was performed to revisit worlds of childhood during a time when sample communities were more isolated from mass markets and media than they are today. A count was performed of children aged 3 to 10 in each community sample scored as engaging in creative-constructive play, fantasy play, role play, and games with rules. Children from Nyansongo and Khalapur scored lowest overall, those from Tarong and Juxtlahuaca scored intermediate, and those from Taira and Orchard Town scored highest. Cultural norms and opportunities determined how …

Sister Gen: A Case Study Of Vincentian Leadership, Joseph Mccann C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

From 1961 to 1988, Genevieve O’Farrell, a Daughter of Charity, was the principal of Saint Louise’s Comprehensive College in Belfast. Her many achievements as a leader of the school and within Belfast are described, along with her own formation, the events and characteristics that made her a leader, and the lessons that may be drawn from her life and career. She consistently raised the school’s academic standards and promoted service to the community even while it was surrounded by the violence of the “Troubles.”

Cross-Cultural Vincentian Leadership: The Challenge Of Developing Culturally Intelligent Leaders, Marco Tavanti Ph.D. Oct 2005

Cross-Cultural Vincentian Leadership: The Challenge Of Developing Culturally Intelligent Leaders, Marco Tavanti Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

As the Hay-Vincentian Leadership Project (HLP) becomes international in scope, Vincentian values must be applied in and sometimes adapted to cross-cultural contexts. The concepts of cultural diversity, cultural competence, and cultural intelligence are explained in general and against a Vincentian background. Qualities that make leaders effective in cross-cultural situations are explored. Vincent de Paul set an example for such success in the preparation he mandated for those going on foreign missions and in the sensitivity he showed in his own work with people from other cultures. Culture’s relationship to leadership is examined using the work of the anthropologist Edward Hall …
