The identification of parasites from ancient cultures expands our list of parasites infective to extant humans. A partially mummified human body from the archeological site of Lapa do Boquete, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, was recently discovered. It was interred between 600 and 1,200 yr ago. Dietary analysis showed that the mummified body was from a society that had a mixed subsistence of agriculture and gathering of wild foods. Coprolites from the body contained numerous helminth eggs. The eggs were identified as those of Echinostoma sp. and hookworm. Hookworm infection in pre-Columbian populations is already established, but this is the first …

Changes In Bird Abundance After Wildfire: Importance Of Fire Severity And Time Since Fire, Kristina M. Smucker, Richard L. Hutto, Brian M. Steele
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Fire can cause profound changes in the composition and abundance of plant and animal species, but logistics, unpredictability of weather, and inherent danger make it nearly impossible to study high-severity fire effects experimentally. We took advantage of a unique opportunity to use a before–after/control–impact (BACI) approach to analyze changes in bird assemblages after the severe fires of 2000 in the Bitterroot Valley, Montana. Observers surveyed birds using 10-minute point counts and collected vegetation data from 13 burned and 13 unburned transects for five years before fire and three years after fire. We compared changes in vegetation variables and relative bird …

Ritual Legitimacy And Scriptural Authority, James W. Watts
Ritual Legitimacy And Scriptural Authority, James W. Watts
Religion - All Scholarship
In this essay, James W. Watts explains the interdependence of texts and rituals with regard to ancient religions. Specifically, he outlines patterns of practice and developments in the ritual use of texts and the texual authorization of rituals in antiquity.
Watts also makes the case that beyond the interplay of texual authority and ritual legitimacy that most ancient cultures engaged in, Judaism was unique in elevating the Torah along with its other laws and stories to special "scriptural" status.
On Brian Attebery’S Decoding Gender In Science Fiction, C. Jason Smith
On Brian Attebery’S Decoding Gender In Science Fiction, C. Jason Smith
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The premise of Decoding Gender in Science Fiction is, as Brian Attebery states in the first chapter, that “Science fiction is a useful tool for investigating habits of thought, including conceptions of gender. Gender, in turn, offers an interesting glimpse into some of the unacknowledged messages that permeate science fiction” (1). What we have in Decoding Gender in Science Fiction is the most comprehensive analysis of gender tropes in Science Fiction from its origins in Gothic literature to today. Attebery states in his introduction that he was surprised to find there was no historical study of the development …

Uncovering The Presumption Of Factual Innocence In Canadian Law, Mark Herrema
Uncovering The Presumption Of Factual Innocence In Canadian Law, Mark Herrema
Dalhousie Law Journal
The presumption of innocence has long been regarded as a hallmark of our justice system. Rhetoric abounds and finding a more celebrated legal doctrine is difficult. For most in the legalprofession, the presumption of innocence represents the procedural requirement that the Crown prove all elements of an offence. Yet, aside from its procedural and evidentiary protections, does the presumption of innocence offer any protection at the pre-charge phase of the criminal justice process? Specifically, for the majority of Canadians who have never been, or never will be charged with an offence, does the presumption of innocence offer any protection? Regrettably, …

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
This article investigates policies that are responsive to crime in disadvantaged, urban neighborhoods from a community-based context. The vehicle is an analysis of a community-wide prayer vigil held in Chicago in May of 1997. The vigil resulted from a collaboration between the Chicago Police Department and hundreds of (mostly) African- American churches on Chicago’s West Side. Strikingly, the local police district’s commander facilitated the vigil. We explain the sociological and political significance of this collaboration by drawing upon the “Chicago School” of urban sociology and demonstrating theoretically and empirically the potential for the collaboration, through the integration of key community …

Numerical Comparative Law: Do We Need Statistical Evidence In Law In Order To Reduce Complexity?, Mathias M. Siems
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The article explores the use of numerical methods in comparative law, questioning whether statistical approaches can effectively simplify legal complexity without oversimplification. It examines both the potential benefits and drawbacks of quantifying legal systems, arguing that while numerical methods can enhance practical utility, they must be used cautiously to avoid neglecting legal complexity and contextual factors.

Outsourcing And Collective Bargaining: A "Win-Win" For Employers And Employees, Shelby Silverman
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note argues that the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) framework effectively promotes negotiation over outsourcing decisions, aligning with Congress's intent to foster industrial peace through collective bargaining. Despite challenges in modern labor markets, the legal framework encourages mutual negotiation, driven by uncertainty and the desire to avoid disputes.

Using Sociocultural Theory To Guide Teacher Use And Integration Of Instructional Technology In Two Professional Development Schools, Joan Whipp, Ellen Eckman, Leigh A. Van Den Kieboom
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
This article demonstrates how sociocultural theories can be used to support strategic structuring of professional development activities for preservice and practicing teachers on technology use and integration. Examples are drawn from the authors' experiences with teachers in two professional development schools that participated in a four-year Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers in Technology (PT3) project. After a review of sociocultural theory and their context, the authors describe three "activity systems" in these schools: one for practicing teachers, one for preservice teachers, and a joint preservice/practicing teacher system. Important supports for use and integration of technology built into each of these …

Middle Archaic earthen mound complexes in the lower Mississippi valley are remote antecedents of the famous but much younger Poverty Point earthworks. Watson Brake is the largest and most complex of these early mound sites. Wry extensive coring and stratigraphic studies, aided by 25 radiocarbon dates and six huninescence dates, show that minor earthworks were begun here at ca. 3500 B.C. in association with an oval arrangement of burned rock middens at the edge of a stream terrace. The full extent of the first earthworks is not yet known. Substantial moundraising began ca. 3350 B.C. and continued in stages until …
