The Immunohistochemical Approach To Determine The Origin And Possible Function Of The Juxtaoral Organ In Dogs, Meltem Bahcelioglu, Engin Calguner, Deniz Erdogan, Cigdem Elmas, Rabet Gozil, Semih Keskil, Dural Kadioglu

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we applied immuno- histochemical techniques on the functionally little known organ of Chievitz (juxtaoral organ [JOO]) in dogs to determine its origin and possible function. METHODS: The term abortive materials of 6 Doberman dogs were used for experimental procedures in July 2002 to June 2003 at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey, after routine light microscopic tissue preparation, the sections were stained with Masson9s trichrome stain. In order to elucidate the function-related origin of the organ, we used epidermal growth factor (EGF-r), transforming growth factor (TGF-alpha) and nerve growth factor (NGF-beta) immunohistochemical stains. RESULTS: We …

He Is The One: The Matrix Trilogy's Postmodern Movie Messiah, Mark D. Stucky Oct 2005

He Is The One: The Matrix Trilogy's Postmodern Movie Messiah, Mark D. Stucky

Journal of Religion & Film

Many films have used Christ figures to enrich their stories. In The Matrix trilogy, however, the Christ figure motif goes beyond superficial plot enhancements and forms the fundamental core of the three-part story. Neo's messianic growth (in self-awareness and power) and his eventual bringing of peace and salvation to humanity form the essential plot of the trilogy. Without the messianic imagery, there could still be a story about the human struggle in the Matrix, of course, but it would be a radically different story than that presented on the screen.

On The Need For Green Accounting, Joseph S. Merrill, Richard V. Calvasina Oct 2005

On The Need For Green Accounting, Joseph S. Merrill, Richard V. Calvasina

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

It is time to argue that it is imperative for green accounting to be the norm for financial reporting. Green accounting requires the disclosure of environmental impacts of corporations’ activities as a component of financial reports. Green accounting disclosure is a vital part of information needed for investment decisions that can help create a sustainable economy. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) efforts to require such disclosure will be examined and recommendations for more adequate disclosure will be discussed.

Nurturing The Spirit At Work: Impact On Work Unit Performance, Dennis Duchon, Donde Ashmos Plowman Oct 2005

Nurturing The Spirit At Work: Impact On Work Unit Performance, Dennis Duchon, Donde Ashmos Plowman

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Workplace spirituality is defined as a workplace that recognizes that employees have an inner life that nourishes and is nourished by meaningful work that takes place in the context of community. This definition, based on three fundamental spiritual needs, has implications for how leaders can enhance work unit performance by nurturing the spirit at work. In an exploratory study of six work units in a large hospital system we used an instrument that measures workplace spirituality. The results led to propositions concerning the effect of work unit spirituality on work unit performance and the relationship between work unit spirituality and …

Maximum Size Of Fish Caught With Standard Gears And Recreational Angling, Kevin L. Pope, Gene R. Wilde, Daryl L. Bauer Oct 2005

Maximum Size Of Fish Caught With Standard Gears And Recreational Angling, Kevin L. Pope, Gene R. Wilde, Daryl L. Bauer

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We correlated maximum lengths of freshwater fishes captured during 10 years with standard gears (i.e., gill nets, boat electrofishers and trap nets) and angling from Nebraska water bodies to determine which methodology provided better estimates of maximum size of fishes produced within a given water body. In general, maximum length of fishes captured with standard gears was smaller than maximum length of fishes captured with angling. Although significant (based on sequential Bonferroni adjustment) correlation was found in only one of nine sport fishes assessed, all correlations were positive indicating a general trend between maximum size of fishes captured with these …

Enhanced Pathogenicity Of Candida Albicans Pre-Treated With Subinhibitory Concentrations Of Fluconazole In A Mouse Model Of Disseminated Candidiasis, Dhammika H.M.L.P. Navarathna, Jacob M. Hornby, Natasha Hoerrmann, Anne M. Parkhurst, Gerald E. Duhamel, Kenneth Nickerson Oct 2005

Enhanced Pathogenicity Of Candida Albicans Pre-Treated With Subinhibitory Concentrations Of Fluconazole In A Mouse Model Of Disseminated Candidiasis, Dhammika H.M.L.P. Navarathna, Jacob M. Hornby, Natasha Hoerrmann, Anne M. Parkhurst, Gerald E. Duhamel, Kenneth Nickerson

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Objectives: To investigate the relative pathogenicity of Candida albicans treated with subinhibitory concentrations of fluconazole in a mouse model of disseminated candidiasis. Previous studies indicate that these cells secrete 10 times more farnesol than do untreated cells. In our usage, subinhibitory means a concentration which causes a prominent decrease in turbidity but still allows some cell growth. Methods: C. albicans A72 cells were grown overnight in 0–5.0 mM fluconazole, washed, and inoculated in mice by tail vein injection. Groups of 15 or 16 mice were injected with 1.3 • 106cells and mortality was recorded for 7 days post-inoculation. …

Do Inhalation General Anesthetic Drugs Induce The Neuronal Release Of Endogenous Opioid Peptides?, Raymond M. Quock, Linda K. Vaughn Oct 2005

Do Inhalation General Anesthetic Drugs Induce The Neuronal Release Of Endogenous Opioid Peptides?, Raymond M. Quock, Linda K. Vaughn

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The antagonism of some effects of inhalation general anesthetic agents by naloxone suggests that there may be an opioid component to anesthetic action. There is evidence that this opioid action component is due to neuronal release of endogenous opioid peptides. The strongest evidence is provided by studies that monitor changes in the concentration of opioid peptides in the perfused brain following inhalation of the anesthetic. Indirect or circumstantial evidence also comes from studies of anesthetic effects on regional brain levels of opioid peptides, antagonism of selected anesthetic effects by antisera to opioid peptides and anesthetic-induced changes radioligand binding to opioid …

Alien(Ating) Naturecultures: Feminist Sf As Creative Science Studies, Helen Merrick Oct 2005

Alien(Ating) Naturecultures: Feminist Sf As Creative Science Studies, Helen Merrick

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

“Alien(ating) Naturecultures” examines the potential of feminist science fictions to act as “cross-cultural” narratives in encounters between the humanities and sciences. Merrick argues that the conjunction of disciplines figured by the term “science fiction” bears re-examination as a resource for science studies, and a potential mediator in science-humanities dialogues.

Specifically, Merrick asks, when we are concerned with critiquing and unpacking technoscientific practices, cultures and knowledges, what can more creative forms such as science fiction (sf) offer? Such questions about “naturecultures” are intimately connected to the ways we construct and understand “life,” the “human” and difference in the discourses of Science. …

Will Travel For Food: Spatial Discounting In Two New World Monkeys, Jeffrey R. Stevens, Alexandra G. Rosati, Kathryn R. Ross, Marc D. Hauser

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Nonhuman animals steeply discount the future, showing a preference for small, immediate over large, delayed rewards [1–5]. Currently unclear is whether discounting functions depend on context. Here, we examine the effects of spatial context on discounting in cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) and common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), species known to differ in temporal discounting [5]. We presented subjects with a choice between small, nearby rewards and large, distant rewards. Tamarins traveled farther for the large reward than marmosets, attending to the ratio of reward differences rather than their absolute values. This species difference contrasts with performance on …

"The Day The Earth Stood Still”: 1950'S Sci-Fi, Religion And The Alien Messiah, Matthew Etherden

Journal of Religion & Film

The Day the Earth Stood Still is a unique film for its time. From a secular point of view, it was one of the first to not portray aliens as the enemy. From a spiritual point of view, it has many similarities to the gospel accounts of the public life and teachings of Jesus. This essay will consider the religious significance of this film (both in its historical context and the present), comparing it to similar works and contrasting it with the beliefs of a number of New Age movements. The main character, Klaatu, will then be considered as a …

Knowledge And Mortality In Blade Runner And Genesis 2-3, Kyle Keefer Oct 2005

Knowledge And Mortality In Blade Runner And Genesis 2-3, Kyle Keefer

Journal of Religion & Film

Definition of humanity's limits is a paramount concern for both the Hebrew creation myth of Genesis and the film Blade Runner. The film works as an interpretation of the biblical account by presenting replicants as having gained knowledge without being able to extend their lifespan. In this sense, they have abilities and limits that parallel those of the first man and first woman in Genesis.
