Basecalling For Traces Derived For Multiple Templates, Aaron Tenney

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Three methods for analyzing sequencing traces derived from sequencing reactions containing two DNA templates are presented. All rely on alignment to a segment of assembled genomic sequence containing the original template sequence. Spliced alignment algorithms are used so that traces derived from processed mRNA can be analyzed. The main application of these techniques is the elucidation of alternately spliced transcripts. Several experimental verification of one of the techniques is presented including testing on a set of 48 alternately spliced targets from the human genome and 47 negative controls.

This article contributes to an ongoing debate about the feasibility and desireability of measuring the "merit" of appellate judges--and their consequent Supreme Court potential--by using objective performance variables. Relying on the provocative and controversial "tournament criteria" proposed by Professors Stephen Choi and Mitu Gulati in two recent articles, Brudney assesses the "Supreme Court potential" of Warren Burger and Harry Blackmun based on their appellate court records. He finds that Burger's appellate performance appears more promising under the Choi and Gulati criteria, but then demonstrates how little guidance these quantitative assessments actually provide when reviewing the two men's careers on the …

Non-experts easily observe that the competitive Northern Europe electricity market2 reflects far less market manipulation (gaming) than in the Western U.S.3 Joseph Stiglitz presents a stark view of U.S. competition, particularly of deregulation gone amok: Basic laws of economics say that competition is supposed to result in zero profits; if the lobbyists really believed their proposals would result in intense competition, why were they investing so much in trying to convince the government to adopt these proposals that would, presumably, wipe away their profits? This study attempted to replicate and extend the findings of Castano et al. (2002) and Blascovich et al. (1997), both of whom examined how quickly people classify ambiguous facial photographs. Castano et al. found that people who identified strongly with their ingroup took less time to classify ambiguous targets. Blascovich etal. (1997), however, found the opposite- that racist individuals took longer to classify ambiguous photos. However, whereas Blascovich et al. used actual photographs of racially mixed (black vs. white) people, Castano et al. used a computer morphing program to create different ·degrees of racial ambiguity (northern vs. southern Italian). Adipocyte determination- and differentiation-dependent factor 1 (ADD1) plays important roles in lipid metabolism and insulin-dependent gene expression. Because insulin stimulates carbohydrate and lipid synthesis, it would be important to decipher how the transcriptional activity of ADD1/SREBP1c is regulated in the insulin signaling pathway. In this study, we demonstrated that glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3 negatively regulates the transcriptional activity of ADD1/SREBP1c. GSK3 inhibitors enhanced a transcriptional activity of ADD1/SREBP1c and expression of ADD1/SREBP1c target genes including fatty acid synthase (FAS), acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1), and steroyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) in adipocytes and hepatocytes. Alzheimers disease (AD) is pathologically characterized by amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, inflammation, and neurodegeneration. According to the amyloid hypothesis of AD, the central mediating event of the disease is the deposition of amyloid. The inflammation hypothesis of AD states that it is the inflammatory response to plaques and tangles, rather than the actual lesions, which causes the disease. Studies described here combine the two approaches into a single model. Four studies are presented using a basic protocol of intrahippocampal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection to stimulate inflammation in transgenic mice. The Initial-Final Mass Relationship: Spectroscopy Of White Dwarfs In Ngc 2099 (M37), Jasonjot Singh Kalirai, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.

We present new observations of very faint white dwarfs (WDs) in the rich open star cluster NGC 2099 (M37). Following deep, wide-field imaging of the cluster using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, we have now obtained spectroscopic observations of candidate WDs using both the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on Gemini North and the Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on Keck. Of our 24 WD candidates (all fainter than V = 22.4), 21 are spectroscopically confirmed to be bona fide WDs, four or five of which are most likely field objects. Fitting 18 of the 21 WD spectra with model atmospheres, we find that most WDs …
