Thresholds Of Significance, Carmela M. Campbell

Master's Projects

This report provides a comprehensive understanding of environmental “Thresholds of Significance” by including a broad discussion of the general concepts associated with thresholds and by also providing a sample thresholds document for projects that occur on unincorporated Santa Clara County lands. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) defines a thresholds as an identifiable quantitative, qualitative or performance level of a particular environmental effect. Non-compliance with a threshold results in a determination that a particular project may have a significant effect on the environment and necessitates preparation of an Environmental Impact Report.

The Specter Of Speciesism: Buddhist And Christian Views Of Animals, Christopher Key Chapple

Theological Studies Faculty Works

Waldau's meticulous study assesses the origins of the term “speciesism,” coined by Ryder in 1970, and explores the link between speciesism and slavery, colonization, and the oppression of women and children. Just as ethical discourse has been transformed throughout history regarding these issues, the author argues that as more information becomes available, human attitudes regarding animals will evolve. Based on scientific research, he asserts that a new morality will arise that acknowledges the inherent moral standing of animals and will overturn the long-held view that animals serve only one purpose: to serve humanity.

Embedded processors that are common in electronic devices perform a limited set of tasks compared to general-purpose processor systems. They have limited resources which have to be efficiently used. Optimal utilization of program memory needs a reduction in code size which can be achieved by eliminating unnecessary address computations i.e., generate optimal offset assignment that utilizes built-in addressing modes. Single offset assignment (SOA) solutions, used for processors with one address register; start with the access sequence of variables to determine the optimal assignment. Inclusive Photoproduction Of Lepton Pairs In The Parton Model, A. Psaker

In the framework of the QCD parton model, we study unpolarized scattering of high energy real photons from a proton target into lepton pairs and a system of hadrons. For a given parametrization of parton distributions in the proton, we calculate the cross section of this process and show the cancellation of the interference terms.

"Walking The Queen's Highway": Ideology And Cultural Landscape In Nothern Ireland, Deborah J. Miller

The use of public art and ritual in Northern Ireland leads to the creation of cultural landscapes heavy with symbolism – ideological landscapes – that maintain social divisions and incite conflict. Mural and curbstone painting, flag bearing, the construction of memorials, and parading are activities that inscribe messages in the landscape. This study documents the types of symbolism prevalent in Northern Irish landscapes, the meanings attributed to them, and the reactions and subsequent cultural landscape re-creations that result. Loyalist and nationalist marches that incite riots and civil disorder have disrupted and delayed peace efforts in Northern Ireland for decades. Both …

Factors Controlling Seagrass Revegetation Onto Dredged Material Deposits: A Case Study In Lower Laguna Madre, Texas, James E. Kaldy, Kenneth H. Dunton, Joseph L. Kowalski, Kun-Seop Lee

Our objective was to evaluate the influence of water quality and sediment chemistry on the survival and growth of Halodule wrightii transplanted onto unconsolidated dredged materials in Lower Laguna Madre, TX. Subsequent to transplanting activities, we measured environmental conditions and seagrass parameters at transplant and natural beds over a 1-yr period. Although water quality characteristics at the transplant and comparison sites were compatible with seagrass growth, transplants failed to survive for more than a few months. Seagrasses at natural sites received high light (>6000 mols m−2 y−1) and exhibited typical patterns of annual growth, biomass and density as well …
