Voices Of First And Second Generation College Students: Reasons For Enrolling In Graduate Education, Rodney S. Ranes

Masters Theses

The purpose of the present study was to identify characteristics and choices that have assisted first-generation students in attaining a baccalaureate degree and enrolling in graduate study. Previous research identified academic preparation, institutional choice, and family experiences as areas that influenced first-generation students. Attrition and retention were also explored, as well as issues related to graduate enrollment. A selected sample of four first-generation and four second-generation participants were interviewed using qualitative methods (Lincoln & Guba, 1985) regarding academic preparation, family culture, prior institutional choice, and influential mentors. Interview findings were triangulated and themes and issues identified. Results showed that second-generation …

Data for this study were obtained from an existing database from an East Coast university counseling center. The overall sample consisted of 209 males and 297 females, all of whom were seeking treatment for the first time at the counseling center. The primary groups of interest were Asian American students (n = …

The Role Of Mood As A Mediator In Trait-Congruent Cognitive Processing: Does Mood State Mediate The Relationship Between Personality Traits And Judgment?, Janice E. Harewood Jan 2004

The Role Of Mood As A Mediator In Trait-Congruent Cognitive Processing: Does Mood State Mediate The Relationship Between Personality Traits And Judgment?, Janice E. Harewood

Masters Theses

The relationship between affective traits and predictive judgment was investigated using a mediation framework approach to examine whether the current mood state of participants acted as a mediator between traits and judgment. This relationship was examined for anxious trait, anxious mood, and judgment for negative events and for subjective well-being, happy mood, and judgment for positive events. A written scenario and an imaginal procedure were used to create anxious, happy, or neutral moods in participants, and a fourth group received a simple cognitive task. Results showed that the mood inductions were invalid. Given that the correlations necessary to test for …

The Effects Of Family Functioning And Parent Structure On The Prevalence And Intensity Of Childhood Fears, Rebecca Leis Pederson Jan 2004

The Effects Of Family Functioning And Parent Structure On The Prevalence And Intensity Of Childhood Fears, Rebecca Leis Pederson

Masters Theses

The current study was designed to examine the relation between family factors, such as family functioning and parent structure, and the prevalence and intensity of childhood fears. One hundred and sixteen children in grades 3-12 were surveyed using the Fear Survey Schedule-II. Of the 116 children surveyed, 75 had parents who returned the Self Report Family Inventory and demographic survey. Results indicated that younger, female participants reported fears of greater prevalence and intensity than male participants. Contrary to predictions, neither family functioning or any of its associated factors were found to be related to the prevalence and intensity of childhood …

Narcissistic Self-Enhancement And Willingness To Seek Feedback On Weaknesses, Jessica J. Dhom Jan 2004

Narcissistic Self-Enhancement And Willingness To Seek Feedback On Weaknesses, Jessica J. Dhom

Masters Theses

In the current study, I investigated the relationship between narcissism level and feedback-seeking behavior. Using a dimensional approach to personality classification, I considered narcissism to be a component of normal personality and measured this construct with the Narcissistic Personality Inventory. I also investigated the willingness of narcissistic individuals to view feedback regarding their weaknesses, as well as the relationships between narcissism and different cognitive reactions to favorable and unfavorable feedback. Results indicated that, when given the opportunity, narcissistic people seek favorable feedback that pertains to their strengths, while passing on opportunities to receive feedback regarding their weaknesses. They also react …

Understanding The Variables Associated With Mathematics Achievement, Kelsie J. Buker Jan 2004

Understanding The Variables Associated With Mathematics Achievement, Kelsie J. Buker

Masters Theses

Mathematics achievement scores on standardized test batteries are a major area of concern in public schools. This study examined the relationships among different variables that may affect mathematics achievement as measured by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). Specifically, this study investigated the relationships among gender, mathematics fluency, mathematics accuracy, anxiety toward mathematics, and mathematics composite scores on the ITBS. In addition, the study assessed the effects of gender and anxiety on mathematics achievement as measured by accuracy, fluency, and ITBS math scores. One hundred fourth and sixth grade participants completed the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Anxiety Scale to measure their …

Current Preschool Screening Practices In Illinois And The Role Of The School Psychologist, Susan M. Kapper

Masters Theses

Current preschool screening practices in Illinois and the role of the school psychologist in these practices were investigated. A survey focusing on current screening practices and the role of the school psychologist in the development and implementation of screening programs was developed and sent to 200 randomly selected members of the Illinois School Psychologists Association (ISPA). Results indicate that some consistency in the procedures and administration of preschool screening do exist between programs within the state of Illinois. These consistencies include consensus on the purpose of preschool screening programs, personnel involved in the administration of these programs, assessment tools utilized …

"You Learn How To Act": The Impact Of Service With Elders On Student Learning, Ellen Deluca, Linda Andrews, Patty Hale

Service Learning, General

This paper describes a project in which faculty linked with two agencies to facilitate student learning about communication with elders. Data on student learning was collected via survey, focus groups and reflective writing. Survey results showed that the five most important benefits students rated themselves as gaining from the service learning experience were: volunteering time to help others, improving oral communication skills, developing new skills, and developing awareness of social problems. Themes derived from focus group interviews were: ''you learn how to act," and "a different dimension of a person". Analysis of data revealed that service learning assists beginning nursing …

Changing Landscapes: Enduring Values, Angela Bodino Jan 2004

Changing Landscapes: Enduring Values, Angela Bodino

Service Learning, General

The campus of Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) seems pastoral with 160 acres of woods, a pond, and gentle grassy slopes. Two miles to the west are two golf courses and farmland. Two miles east are homes built in the 17th and 18th Centuries close to the North Branch of the Raritan River, close to a colonial cemetery and the soaring spire of the Reformed Church. This setting reminds us of an early American ethic of hope and change, the promise of vast spaces, new destinies and new communities.

Research Matters, Shelley H. Billig Jan 2004

Research Matters, Shelley H. Billig

Service Learning, General

Many people are attracted to service-learning because they see what it does for students, schools, and communities. Students are more engaged in their studies, schools are revitalized, with a new sense of mission and focus, and community members, energized by working with students on service-learning projects, are more supportive of young people and their schools.

This rosy picture is the reality in some settings with well-implemented service-learning, but too often this is not the case. In fact, much service-learning practice is uneven in quality, and research shows that low-quality service-learning has little impact.

Measuring Polynomial Invariants Of Multiparty Quantum States, Matthew S. Leifer, N. Linden, A. Winter Jan 2004

Measuring Polynomial Invariants Of Multiparty Quantum States, Matthew S. Leifer, N. Linden, A. Winter

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We present networks for directly estimating the polynomial invariants of multiparty quantum states under local transformations. The structure of these networks is closely related to the structure of the invariants themselves and this lends a physical interpretation to these otherwise abstract mathematical quantities. Specifically, our networks estimate the invariants under local unitary (LU) transformations and under stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). Our networks can estimate the LU invariants for multiparty states, where each party can have a Hilbert space of arbitrary dimension and the SLOCC invariants for multiqubit states. We analyze the statistical efficiency of our networks compared …

The New Look Of Shareholder Litigation: Acquisition-Oriented Class Actions, Robert B. Thompson, Randall S. Thomas Jan 2004

The New Look Of Shareholder Litigation: Acquisition-Oriented Class Actions, Robert B. Thompson, Randall S. Thomas

Vanderbilt Law Review

Now, however, a new form of shareholder litigation has emerged that is distinct from derivative or securities fraud claims: class action lawsuits filed under state law challenging director conduct in mergers and acquisitions. The empirical data reported in this article show that these acquisition-oriented suits are now the dominant form of corporate litigation and outnumber derivative suits by a wide margin.

Are these acquisition-oriented class actions just another deadbeat in the corporate governance debate? Should policymakers take action to cut back on the development of this new form of shareholder litigation? In this paper, we argue that, just as with …

Public Confidence Laws Gone Awry: A Modern Circuit Split Reveals That Some Federal Courts Manipulate Standing Rules To Promulgate Severe First Amendment Restrictions On The Spouses And Children Of Public Employees, Nicholas R. Farrell Jan 2004

Public Confidence Laws Gone Awry: A Modern Circuit Split Reveals That Some Federal Courts Manipulate Standing Rules To Promulgate Severe First Amendment Restrictions On The Spouses And Children Of Public Employees, Nicholas R. Farrell

Vanderbilt Law Review

Federal courts in the United States have consistently upheld the constitutional doctrine that "[t]he essential rights of the First Amendment in some instances are subject to the elemental need for order without which the guarantees of civil rights to others would be a mockery." Given the central role of government workers in maintaining that order, the First Amendment rights of public employees have been particularly susceptible to restriction. For example, in 1940, Congress enacted the Hatch Act, which declared unlawful certain political activities of federal employees. Specifically, section nine of the Act prohibited officers and employees in the executive branch …

Insurance Triggers As Judicial Gatekeepers In Toxic Mold Litigation, Gregory A. Goodman Jan 2004

Insurance Triggers As Judicial Gatekeepers In Toxic Mold Litigation, Gregory A. Goodman

Vanderbilt Law Review

At the dawn of the 21st century, a new plague is leeching across the nation's legal landscape. "Some call it the Perfect Storm-a confluence of events that merged into a financial crisis for the insurance industry and a politically charged catastrophe for... homeowners, threatening disaster for the.., economy." What exactly is this Perfect Storm quickly overwhelming both the legislative and judicial systems? Mold. Not the harmless mold growing in a neglected bathtub, but toxic mold that can ravage homes and other buildings from the inside out, while allegedly causing the inhabitants to suffer nasty fates. Mold destroying dwellings is nothing …

The Misappropriation Of Trust Fund Taxes Under The Guise Of Reasonable Cause, P. Prestin Weidner Jan 2004

The Misappropriation Of Trust Fund Taxes Under The Guise Of Reasonable Cause, P. Prestin Weidner

Vanderbilt Law Review

Employers are generally required to withhold income, Social Security, and Medicare taxes from their employees' paychecks. Employers hold these taxes "in trust" until they are deposited or otherwise paid over to the government. Since one of the most common problems faced by owners and managers of businesses is the lack of adequate cash to satisfy their numerous immediate obligations, this system creates a temptation for the employer to use the withheld funds to cover its costs. Short-term bank loans are often either unavailable or unaffordable, and the employer's own debtors may be unable to pay or not yet obligated to …

Incorporating Middle School Students' Insights To Determine Appropriate Curricula In Physical Education, Kirk E. Mathias, Jim Stillwell Jan 2004

Incorporating Middle School Students' Insights To Determine Appropriate Curricula In Physical Education, Kirk E. Mathias, Jim Stillwell

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Curriculum innovation is normally driven by what is thought to be philosophically sound. The value orientation of curriculum development is typically based on teacher reflection as opposed to student opinion. Recently, studies have begun to examine the student's interests, likes, dislikes and values as a precursor to curriculum development. This coupled with the impact of physical activity involvement and its importance to one's health (USSDHS, 1996) presents physical educators with an enormous challenge. Based on the historical approach to curriculum development, students would only be presented with those activities believed to make the greatest longterm impact. This runs a tremendous …

Effective Multicultural Education: What Today's Teachers Want, Nancy P. Gallavan, Leann G. Putney Jan 2004

Effective Multicultural Education: What Today's Teachers Want, Nancy P. Gallavan, Leann G. Putney

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This article reports valuable research findings summarizing survey responses from 20 practicing pre K-12 teachers reflecting their understanding of effective multicultural education and identifying what today's teachers want. Prior to course instruction, participants were asked to define multicultural education specifying what they want for themselves as professional educators and what they want for their learners. The array of teachers' responses was synthesized into five significant, yet interconnected, themes offering a multitude of global applications. Teachers reported that effective multicultural education should: (1) offer natural and authentic learning experiences; (2) balance integration and emphasis of concepts, content, and processes; (3) create …
