Vietnam And The More Flags Campaign, 1964--1965: The Search For American Allies In The Commonwealth, Becky L Bruce
Vietnam And The More Flags Campaign, 1964--1965: The Search For American Allies In The Commonwealth, Becky L Bruce
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In April 1964, the United States initiated the More Flags campaign in an attempt to establish a western coalition force and diplomatic support system for the South Vietnamese government and for American intervention against the North. Three of the most heavily courted nations were the Commonwealth members of Australia, Great Britain, and Canada. This first in-depth study of this diplomatic effort and the comparative response of these Commonwealth nations provides insight into the U.S. efforts at coalition building, the essentially unilateralist and nationalist nature of U.S. foreign policy, and the varying U.S. relationships with these three important members of the …
Metricizing' Non-Metric Craniofacial Traits: Application Of Three Dimensional Geometric Morphometric Analysis To Ancestral Identification, Summer Joy Decker
Metricizing' Non-Metric Craniofacial Traits: Application Of Three Dimensional Geometric Morphometric Analysis To Ancestral Identification, Summer Joy Decker
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Non-metric traits are commonly used by anthropologists to distinguish between groups for such things as age, sex, and even ancestry. However, many non-metric traits cannot be measured with traditional osteological tools. While these traditional methods are useful, they do not take individual variation into account. This thesis uses geometric morphometric coordinate data to 'metricize' such traits and to evaluate their accuracy of correctly assigning unknown individuals to statistically defined groups; A 3-D digitizer was used to collect data from 39 craniofacial landmarks to capture the form of several phenotypic facial characteristics. The sample consisted of individuals from four different geographic …
Gis Analysis Of The Pre And Post-Diversion Water Balances In Owens Valley, California, Anna Corinne Draa
Gis Analysis Of The Pre And Post-Diversion Water Balances In Owens Valley, California, Anna Corinne Draa
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Owens Valley, California is located at the western border of both the Basin and Range and Great Basin Provinces. The valley is hydrologically closed; the only outflow for ground and surface waters is evaporation to the atmosphere. Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) began diverting water from Owens Valley in 1913 and has steadily increased the amount of water removed from the valley since then; LADWP has always assumed that the hydrologic system as it existed in 1913 was in equilibrium with modern climate. This study develops a geographical information systems (GIS) based model of Owens Valley to …
Pyrite Geochemistry Across The Betze-Post Deposit, Northern Carlin Trend, Nevada, Christine Ann Henkelman
Pyrite Geochemistry Across The Betze-Post Deposit, Northern Carlin Trend, Nevada, Christine Ann Henkelman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Petrographic, geochemical, and statistical analyses show that stratigraphy and structural controls promoted ore stage fluid flow. For example, ore stage pyrites occur within brecciated rocks and small-scale fractures within the Wispy Member of the Popovich Formation. Ore stage pyrites have trace element signatures that suggest that the fluid was evolving both temporally and spatially. The associated ore stage trace elements include: Au, Cu, Hg, Tl, As, and Sb. Sb has the highest concentration at North Betze and Betze, suggesting that the J-B series faults transported ore fluids that were chemically distinct. As has the highest concentration along the southern part …
Hydrocarbon Occurrences Within The La Popa Basin: Potential Source Rocks, Thermal Maturation, And Hydrocarbon Migration Along The La Popa Salt Weld, La Popa Basin, Ne Mexico, Samuel Mark Hudson
Hydrocarbon Occurrences Within The La Popa Basin: Potential Source Rocks, Thermal Maturation, And Hydrocarbon Migration Along The La Popa Salt Weld, La Popa Basin, Ne Mexico, Samuel Mark Hudson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
New geochemical data indicate the presence of hydrocarbons along the La Popa salt weld, reinforcing the idea that salt welds significantly affect the migration pathways of hydrocarbons. Geochemical testing of samples collected along the length of the weld indicate that at least some of this material is not in situ, but has migrated to its current location along the weld. Distribution of migrated hydrocarbons along the weld is not uniform, and occurs where upturned lithologies and appreciable amounts of remnant salt are present; Biomarkers within samples collected along the weld suggest a clay-rich source rock for the hydrocarbons. None of …
Angle Constrained Paths In Sensor Networks, Xiaojun Liang
Angle Constrained Paths In Sensor Networks, Xiaojun Liang
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Short-length paths in geometric graphs are not necessarily feasible in sensor networks and robotics. Paths with sharp-turn angles cannot be used by robotic vehicles and tend to consume more energy in sensor networks; In this thesis, we investigate the development of short-length paths without sharp-turn angles. We present a critical review of existing algorithms for generating angle constrained paths. We then consider the construction of routes having directional properties---d-monotone routes which are special cases of angle constrained paths. We develop a centralized algorithm for computing shortest d-monotone paths in triangulated networks. Since local computations are highly desired in sensor networks, …

Metallurgical Characterization And Residual Stress Measurements Of Target Structural Materials, Vikram Marthandam
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This investigation is focused on the evaluation of residual stresses in target structural materials due to plastic deformation and welding by using both destructive ring-core (RC) method and nondestructive techniques including positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), neutron diffraction (ND) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. Materials tested were austenitic Type 304L SS and martensitic Alloys EP-823 and HT-9. Types of specimen tested include cold-worked (CW), three-point-bent and welded specimens consisting of similar and dissimilar materials. The CW specimens showed increased residual stresses with an increase in cold reduction level. Measurements made on the welded specimens revealed higher residual stresses close to the …
Measurement Of Lignin And Organic Carbon In Lake Mead Sediment, Ekhlas Lisa Nemr
Measurement Of Lignin And Organic Carbon In Lake Mead Sediment, Ekhlas Lisa Nemr
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Lignin distribution in sediment is a useful tool for tracing the transport of land derived organic matter in an aquatic environment. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) thermochemolysis at sub-pyrolysis temperatures of 300°C followed by GC-MS analysis showed a great promise in being able to semi quantitatively assess the nature of organic carbon in sediments. TMAH chemopyrolysis produces methylated syringyl (S), vanillyl (V), and cinnamyl (C) phenols from lignin, these methylated phenols are an indirect measure of lignin in sediment. The concentration of lignin phenols is indicative of the contribution of terrestrial runoff to lake sediments because lignin is exclusively a product of …
Inadequacy, The Psychopathological Component Of Perfectionism: Validation Of The Inadequacy Scale, Brandon S Park
Inadequacy, The Psychopathological Component Of Perfectionism: Validation Of The Inadequacy Scale, Brandon S Park
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study tests a new measure of inadequacy and assesses its reliability and validity on a sample of 227 college students. The Inadequacy Scale (INAD) was compared to 2 measures of perfectionism: the Frost-Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (F-MPS) and the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (APS-R). The INAD showed equivalent or greater correlations with measures of depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and stress as compared to the full-scale measures of the F-MPS and the APS-R, as well as the subsets of their maladaptive components. The INAD was also more highly predictive of depression, anxiety, and stress (and equivalent to the F-MPS on self-esteem) than the …
Flux Profile Modelling Using Numerical Methods, Bharat Reddy Pemmireddy
Flux Profile Modelling Using Numerical Methods, Bharat Reddy Pemmireddy
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Molecular beam Epitaxy (MBE) is a physical vapor deposition system, used to grow semiconductor layers (epilayers). In order to increase the economics of MBE, the industry has increased the size and number of wafers processed in one stage. This lead to, non-uniformity in thickness of material grown. In this work a process simulation tool based on numerical methods was developed to study different parameters which affect the thickness. The process of emission in open cells was identified as free evaporation and for computer simulation of these types of cells Model I was developed. The process of emission in closed cells …
Consideration Of Race/Ethnicity In Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Outcome Studies, Marilyn J Strada
Consideration Of Race/Ethnicity In Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Outcome Studies, Marilyn J Strada
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Substance use among youth continues to be a major concern in the United States. Several treatments have been developed for youth, but their external validity racially/ethnically diverse populations have not been evaluated for use in ethnic populations. The purpose of this paper was to examine the extent to which adolescent substance use treatment outcome studies have considered race/ethnicity-related factors in the design, implementation, and evaluation of treatments to determine degree of generalizability in racially/ethnically diverse populations. The findings underscored (1) discrepancies between treatment needs of racially/ethnically diverse youth and substances targeted in treatment, (2) the urgent need to focus on …
Kytoon Observations Of The Lake Mead Boundary Layer, Daron J Tanko
Kytoon Observations Of The Lake Mead Boundary Layer, Daron J Tanko
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
On July 14--16, 1997 nearly 60 hours of kytoon sampling of the boundary layer at Lake Mead was done through a cooperative effort among the U.S. Geological Survey, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Micrometeorological data (MET) were analyzed to find boundary layer characteristics of height, precipitable water content, and precipitable water content residence time. In addition, the boundary layer precipitable water content was compared to tributary inflows in an approximated Lake Mead water compariSon The kytoon data was unique and indicated the boundary layer at Lake Mead maintained an inversion during day and night and in …
Power Aware Broadcast Trees For Sensor Networks, Sridhar Veeravalli
Power Aware Broadcast Trees For Sensor Networks, Sridhar Veeravalli
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In a sensor network with nodes distributed randomly in a two dimensional plane, the problem of constructing a power aware broadcast tree from a given source node is a difficult problem when nodes have k different levels of power. In fact, it is known that the problem of constructing a broadcast tree that minimizes total power consumption is NP-hard; We investigate the development of a good approximation algorithm for generating power reduced broadcast trees for sensor networks. We are particularly interested in the diameter of the generated broadcast tree. Both theoretical investigation and simulated results are presented. We present two …

Stratigraphic Evolution Of Las Vegas Bay, Lake Mead, Nevada: 1935--2002, Jonathan George Zybala
Stratigraphic Evolution Of Las Vegas Bay, Lake Mead, Nevada: 1935--2002, Jonathan George Zybala
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Las Vegas Bay in Lake Mead, NV provides a unique mid-scale natural laboratory to study the effects changes in lake level, sediment supply, fluvial discharge and basin physiography have had on stratigraphy of the basin. Mapping, seismic, sidescan sonar and bathymetry surveys, in conjunction with sediment cores, LPSA and 137Cs analyses were integrated to develop a temporal basin filling model for Las Vegas Bay. The evolution of the basin is divided into two periods based on lake history and stratigraphy data: an early 1935--1964, and a latter 1965--2002 period. Changes in lake history are more clearly preserved during the latter …
Culture Clash: Making The Case For A New Paradigm In Police Cultural Training, Hal S Edwards
Culture Clash: Making The Case For A New Paradigm In Police Cultural Training, Hal S Edwards
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Hiring standards in most police agencies result in most officer candidates having little, if any, meaningful exposure to the "oppositional" culture of the urban, minority poor. Given the current popularity of the Community Oriented Policing paradigm---with its emphasis on positive police/community relations---current police hiring and training practices handicap police agencies in their efforts to gain the trust of urban, minority communities. A content analysis of United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division investigations under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (42 U.S.C. 14141) was found to support the hypothesis that the interface between the police …
Modeling Consumer Choices Between Domestic And Foreign Automobiles, Cagla Hirschman
Modeling Consumer Choices Between Domestic And Foreign Automobiles, Cagla Hirschman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This paper analyzes survey data to determine the factors that impact the probability of purchasing a domestic versus foreign brand of automobile. It includes dynamic variables reflecting purchase history and thus the effect past choices may have on current behavior. Some of these factors are shown to be statistically significant. The paper also looks at key subpopulations. We see that preferences in the luxury segment are far better explained by economic, demographic, and dynamic variables than are preferences in the non-luxury market. The paper also looks at switching behavior---domestic owners who switch to foreign brands. The key finding is that …
Martyred Cars, Andrea Rose Gregovich
Martyred Cars, Andrea Rose Gregovich
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The seven story-like chapters of Martyred Cars explore the daily business and labor of a desert junk yard and its brushes with the supernatural. Each chapter takes the point of view of a different character in their own struggles with work, life, and the entities and elements that taunt them from beyond the boundaries of known science. The novel builds these layers of cosmology of archetypal universals, patterns that recur (whether it be in landscape or the pattern on a man's shirt), and a blurring of the boundary between the inanimate and animate, the spiritual and the mundane. Martyred Cars …
Roaring Orchards, Dan Ionascu
Roaring Orchards, Dan Ionascu
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The seeds of Roaring Orchards were planted during a spring drive to Williams College. In one of the outdoor malls spread along the roads that lead east from the northbound curl of the Taconic Parkway, there is on Sundays a small farmers' market. I stopped to get a carton of blueberries from the produce tent, and wandered to a table stacked with used books for sale. Most were illustrated biographies of baseball players and how-to books, but there were also a few dusty yellow paperbacks. I bought The Palm at the End of the Mind, Nostromo, and The Portable Chekov. …
Communication In The Classroom: An Interpretive Analysis Of Empowerment And Choice Theory, Judith Angela Jason
Communication In The Classroom: An Interpretive Analysis Of Empowerment And Choice Theory, Judith Angela Jason
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This analysis synthesizes the psychotherapeutic Choice theory classroom management model with a communication theory of learner empowerment. Four dimensions of learner empowerment: meaningfulness, competence, impact, and choice are illuminated as inherent in the classroom management techniques and behavioral plans within the Choice theory paradigm. This in-depth portrayal synthesizes the language employed in the implementation of the psychotherapeutic model with task assessment manipulations of each of the four learner empowerment dimensions. Linguistic and environmental strategies for cognitive manipulation of task assessments for each dimension are revealed. This interpretive analysis advances Choice theory as a method for manipulating task assessments of each …
Asynchronous Neighborhood Task Synchronization, Supriya Kamaraju
Asynchronous Neighborhood Task Synchronization, Supriya Kamaraju
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Faults are likely to occur in distributed systems. The motivation for designing self-stabilizing system is to be able to automatically recover from a faulty state. As per Dijkstra's definition, a system is self-stabilizing if it converges to a desired state from an arbitrary state in a finite number of steps. The paradigm of self-stabilization is considered to be the most unified approach to designing fault-tolerant systems. Any type of faults, e.g., transient, process crashes and restart, link failures and recoveries, and byzantine faults, can be handled by a self-stabilizing system; Many applications in distributed systems involve multiple phases. Solving these …

Thermal Analysis Of A Concentrating Photovoltaic Receiver, Isaac Mahderekal
Thermal Analysis Of A Concentrating Photovoltaic Receiver, Isaac Mahderekal
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This paper presents the theoretical and computational analysis for a photovoltaic (PV) receiver for the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) dish concentrator. During photovoltaic energy conversion, thermal energy is also generated which results in increases in cell temperature. However, as the cell temperature increases, the efficiency of the PV cells drops---a 40°C increase in temperature for this unit cuts performance by 25%. An algorithm has been developed to predict the maximum cell temperature and working fluid temperature as a function of channel size, mass flow rate, cooling configuration, fluid-to-tube heat transfer coefficient and other parameters. To evaluate the transient characteristics …
