1990s Alt Music Slang And Socioeconomic Precarity In Despentes’ "Vernon Subutex" Series, Daniel J. Lightfoot

In a time of widespread cynicism and disillusionment with the political and economic status quo in France, how can literature give a voice to those discontents while inspiring hope? My contribution will explore Virginie Despentes’ use of slang from 1990s French alternative music subcultures in her narrative depictions of contemporary economic precarity and social alienation in the Vernon Subutex series (2015-17). I will discuss how Despentes uses French slang to establish a distance between economically marginalized characters and more affluent Parisians, highlighting how the former draw on vocabulary from Anglophone indie rock and hip-hop subcultures as an expression of a …

This paper examines the usefulness of film according to the figure widely known as the father of African cinema, Ousmane Sembène. In 2008, Annett Busch and Max Annas published an edited volume of Sembène’s interviews titled Ousmane Sembène: Interviews, which compiles a wide range of conversations conducted with him during his lifetime. This compilation offers insights into his films and the stories surrounding each production. Drawing on this collection, this presentation aims to highlight the significance of film during the twentieth century, the reasons why certain films were banned, and what Sembène believed should be the purpose of filmmaking.

I would like to discuss how literature can serve as an antidote to self-isolation and how it functions as a means to create relationships between humans, thereby providing meaning for life itself. To address this topic, one could recall Judith Butler’s reinterpretation of Adriana Cavarero’s theory of inclination (2021: 46-62). In the philosophical field of ontology, inclination works as an illustration of two different ways of existing: inclined and vertical. Both positionalities correspond to two different ontologies, namely one of caring and one of self-sufficiency. Why is it so important to continue reading modern and contemporary French and Francophone literature? And what does this mean for a real relationship between author and reader that can grow and change over time? Through the literary analysis of two contemporary French novels-- Maryse Condé’s Tales from the Heart: True Stories from My Childhood (1999) and Mariama Bâ’s So Long a Letter (1979)—I demonstrate how it is each author’s use of mixed genre that allows for a connection of author to reader, but also reader to self. Archives and libraries hold significant collections of historic aerial imagery; improvements in geographic information system (GIS) technology and computer vision, a field of artificial intelligence, are dramatically expanding their research potential. This case study describes the activities of the University of Montana’s Archives and Special Collections to facilitate access to a collection of 1930s aerial images, outlines the rationale for investing time and effort in the project and offers considerations for other repositories with historic aerial photography collections. This paper examines a recent Maine Law Court decision, Kennelly v. Mid Coast, in which the Law Court held that the medical records of individuals not involved in a lawsuit, even when redacted of identifying materials, are protected from discovery orders in a malpractice lawsuit, where the records would be used to demonstrate a standard of care to be expected of the administering doctor. The global anti-money laundering (AML) regime is failing. Trillions of dollars are laundered each year, yet governments detect only a fraction of that activity, even as financial institutions spend hundreds of billions on compliance. In the United States, AML regulation has evolved from a retrospective, prosecution-oriented framework into an expansive, preventative regime that measures inputs rather than enforcement outcomes. Although artificial intelligence has demonstrated potential to improve detection, firm-siloed AI systems introduce substantial financial, technological, and systemic risks, including prohibitive development costs, data- privacy constraints, and market concentration among third-party service providers. In the time since AI chatbots and other LLMs became widely available to the public, there has been a pattern of deaths linked to interactions with this technology. While it was settled in early 2026, Garcia v. Character Technologies serves as a case study of how AI chatbots can negatively prey on vulnerable groups in the absence of interventions to mitigate harmful AI behaviors and tragic human outcomes. There is not a singular approach to regulating the harmful effects of predatory chatbots; however, this paper advocates for a harms-based regime influenced by protections in human-subject research. In a sense, AI …

Education technology (EdTech) products, like grading software and plagiarism detectors, have increasingly led to concerns over discrimination issues in schools. While, in some instances, schools can be held liable under the federal education civil rights statutes for these harms, that solution is insufficient. EdTech companies should themselves be held responsible. EdTech companies have not historically been understood to fall under these federal statutes, but this Article argues these companies can appropriately be governed by these laws as “recipients” of federal financial assistance. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that while optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites are the two most powerful remote sensing tools in military intelligence, neither is sufficient on its own. This research aims to articulate their distinct operational roles and argue that their synergistic integration, together with other intelligence assets such as unmanned aerial vehicles, signals intelligence, and human intelligence, is essential for achieving comprehensive situational awareness in modern warfare.
