Development Of An In-Situ Hydrothermal Dissolved Carbon Dioxide Sensor For Hydrothermal Environments, Brooke Love Jan 2004

Development Of An In-Situ Hydrothermal Dissolved Carbon Dioxide Sensor For Hydrothermal Environments, Brooke Love

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Hydrothermal systems at mid ocean ridges are a unique environment which connect the mantle, lithosphere, ocean, and biosphere in one complex system. Fluid chemistry is one key tool in understanding this environment, and carbon dioxide is the most abundant gas in these fluids. Its relative abundance and the information it can give about the magmatic activity, which is one of the ultimate drivers of these systems, and other processes, make it an attractive target for development of an in-situ sensor. This work has shown that attenuated total reflection (ATR) is a promising technique for in situ carbon dioxide measurements under …

The Effects Of Job Embeddedness On Organizational Citizenship, Job Performance, Volitional Absences, And Voluntary Turnover, Thomas W. Lee, Terence R. Mitchell, Chris J. Sablynski, James P. Burton, Brooks C. Holtom Jan 2004

The Effects Of Job Embeddedness On Organizational Citizenship, Job Performance, Volitional Absences, And Voluntary Turnover, Thomas W. Lee, Terence R. Mitchell, Chris J. Sablynski, James P. Burton, Brooks C. Holtom

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

This study extends theory and research on job embeddedness, which was disaggregated into its two major subdimensions, on-the-job and off-the-job embeddedness. As hypothesized, regression analyses revealed that off-the-job embeddedness was significantly predictive of subsequent "voluntary turnover" and volitional absences, whereas on-the-job embeddedness was not. Also as hypothesized, on-the-job embeddedness was significantly predictive of organizational citizenship and job performance, whereas off-the-job embeddedness was not. In addition, embeddedness moderated the effects of absences, citizenship, and performance on turnover. Implications are discussed.

The Relationship Of Consideration And Structure Leadership Styles To Employee Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Child Care Organizations, Stephanie L. Brooke Jan 2004

The Relationship Of Consideration And Structure Leadership Styles To Employee Job Satisfaction In Nonprofit Child Care Organizations, Stephanie L. Brooke

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study examined the relationship between leadership style, as measured by the Leadership Opinion Questionnaire, and job satisfaction, global job satisfaction, and satisfaction with supervision, as measured by the Job Satisfaction Survey. Past research suggests that leaders with a considerate style of leadership are associated with greater job satisfaction compared to leaders who initiate structure. Although many studies of leadership style have been conducted in for-profit organizations, the objective of this research was to better understand the relationship of leadership style to job satisfaction in nonprofit child care centers. Eight directors in nonprofit child care centers in Rochester, New York, …

A Narrative Exploration Of Personal Factors And Organizational Contexts In The Development Of Local Leadership, Kristine Leigh Chadwick Jan 2004

A Narrative Exploration Of Personal Factors And Organizational Contexts In The Development Of Local Leadership, Kristine Leigh Chadwick

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation analyzed the factors contributing to the development of leadership in voluntary community organizations, created as part of a community-level substance abuse prevention project known as the Partnership, and explored the role of intermediary support organizations in nurturing the development of community leaders. Through interviews with team leaders and staff from the support organization, and analysis of program records, this research examined the empowering of individuals and the development of empowering organizations. The development of local leaders in neighborhood, grassroots, or other voluntary organizations has received little attention until recently. Previous studies of empowerment of local leaders have noted …

Macrozooplankton And Micronekton In The Arabian Sea Oxygen Minimum Zone, Mary Rapien Jan 2004

Macrozooplankton And Micronekton In The Arabian Sea Oxygen Minimum Zone, Mary Rapien

Open Access Dissertations

As part of the U.S. Joint Global Ocean Flux Study, zooplankton were collected day and night in vertically stratified MOCNESS net tows at six stations, during four seasonal cruises in the Arabian Sea. Organisms comprising the large size fraction, primarily fish, shrimp, amphipods, and euphausiids (macrozooplankton and micronekton), were identified and enumerated, and their abundance and distributions from 300-1000 m were examined in relation to environmental factors including the OMZ and the monsoon cycle. Contributions to carbon cycling were also estimated for several taxa. Few animals showed significant seasonal differences in abundance. Abundances and distributions of many taxa varied geographically, …

Queer Times: Christopher Isherwood's Modernity, Jamie M. Carr Jan 2004

Queer Times: Christopher Isherwood's Modernity, Jamie M. Carr

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation maps Christopher Isherwood's intellectual and aesthetic reflections from the late 1930s through the late 1970s. Drawing on the queer theory of Eve Sedgwick and the ethical theory of Michel Foucault, I illuminate Isherwood's post-war development of a queer ethos through his focus on the aesthetic, social, and historical politics of the 1930s in his novels Prater Violet (1945), The World in the Evening (1954), and Down There on a Visit (1962), and in his memoir, Christopher and His Kind: 1929-1939 (1976). Though he was a leftist writer in the 1930s, after this decade Isherwood comes to reflect on …

Development And Validation Of The Proactive Health Lifestyle Measures, Norma Jean Perez

Open Access Dissertations

This research project targets the three leading causes of death in the U.S., cardiovascular disease, cancer, and stroke through the successful development and validation of six culturally sensitive Proactive Healthy Lifestyle measures (Stage of Change, Decisional Balance, Self-Efficacy, Skills, Relapse, and Processes of Change) targeting diet, exercise, and smoking. 574 college students were recruited and completed self-report surveys. Data from 418 non-Hispanics was used to develop (N = 209) and validate (N = 209) each of the measures. Data from 155 Hispanics was used to further successfully validate the measures, and explore differences in this group with the non-Hispanic group. …

Trip-Ping Over Business Method Patents, Vincent Chiappetta Jan 2004

Trip-Ping Over Business Method Patents, Vincent Chiappetta

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Professor Chiappetta argues that the current effort to expand substantive international patent law harmonization to include business method patenting is ill-conceived and unsupportable. Such patents cannot be justified on the economic incentive grounds supporting the Western regimes. They are not part of the existing TRIPS agreement, and under present circumstances they should not be added. Any future agreement, bi-lateral or multi-lateral (including an extension of TRIPS), must be based on a better calibrated form of protection (less than patent) and should occur only after the persistent normative differences and the distributional consequences of international substantive harmonization have been addressed.

Equivalence At Law (And Society): Social Status In Korea, Race In America, Ilhyung Lee Jan 2004

Equivalence At Law (And Society): Social Status In Korea, Race In America, Ilhyung Lee

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Professor Lee's Article uses a comparison between the evolving role of social status in Korean society and that of race in the United States to explore Korean society and its legal system. Tracing the historical origins of status consciousness from the Confucianism of the Chosun dynasty to its vestiges in contemporary Korean society, Professor Lee notes several important parallels between social status in Korea and race in the United States. Emphasizing that there remain significant differences between the ways each functions in relation to law, Professor Lee argues that considering the two in equivalence is nonetheless analytically useful in both …

Aids Is Risky Business: Examining The Effect Of The Aids Crisis On Publicly Traded Companies In South Africa And The Implications For Both South African And U.S. Investors, Martha L. Salomon Jan 2004

Aids Is Risky Business: Examining The Effect Of The Aids Crisis On Publicly Traded Companies In South Africa And The Implications For Both South African And U.S. Investors, Martha L. Salomon

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The Author explores the implications of the AIDS epidemic for South African businesses. She discusses the financial impact of the disease on shareholder investments and what measures can, and should, be taken by South African businesses to assess the extent of the financial damage and to help prevent and treat infected individuals. The Author focuses on a new listing requirement recently passed by the Johannesburg Securities Exchange in South Africa that requires companies to implement corporate governance and responsible HIV/AIDS policies as a prerequisite for listing on the Exchange. In addition, she discusses a new "Socially Responsible Investment" index that …

Visuoconstructional Impairment: What Are We Assessing, And How Are We Assessing It?, Jessica Somerville Ruffalo Jan 2004

Visuoconstructional Impairment: What Are We Assessing, And How Are We Assessing It?, Jessica Somerville Ruffalo

Open Access Dissertations

Visuoconstruction (VC) is a commonly-assessed neuropsychological domain that involves the ability to organize and manually manipulate spatial information to make a design. Tests used to measure VC are considered multifactorial in nature given their multiple demands (e.g., visuospatial, executive, motor), and therefore, interpretation of VC impairment can be difficult. Additionally, a wide variety of tests and methods are used to measure VC, further complicating interpretation of results. Although clinicians and researchers spend a great deal of time studying "VC," there has been much confusion about what it is, what is being measured, and how to best measure it. The following …

A Certain Comfort: Betty Ford As First Lady, Nichola D. Gutgold, Linda B. Hobgood

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Her White House stay was short-lived, but the lessons of Betty Ford's experience remain vividly instructive. By accident of a national political crisis which catapulted her to the rank of the first lady in 1974, Mrs. Ford's tenure lasted a brief two years until her husband, Gerald R. Ford lost his bid for reelection. During that time, she developed a relationship of candor with the press and public. She spoke her mind on social and moral issues that were at the forefront of public debate. The positions she took were not always popular with the majority of Americans, many of …

Antioxidants As Risk Factors For Gingival Bleeding, Hee-Jeong Bahng

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Studies of gingival bleeding and the effects of antioxidants on extracellular matrix and immunologic and inflammatory responses provide a rationale for hypothesizing that antioxidants reduce the risk for gingival bleeding. Methods: This study evaluated the role of antioxidants as contributing risk factors for gingival bleeding utilizing the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NAHNES III). A sample of 18,825 adults (20 to ≥ 90 years of age), with dental measurement and assessment of serum levels of antioxidants were included in the study. Gingival bleeding was defined as those who had more than 30 percent of gingival bleeding in 28 …
