The Pending Reinvigoration Of Boyd: Personal Papers Are Protected By The Privilege Against Self-Incrimination, Aaron M. Clemens Nov 2004

The Pending Reinvigoration Of Boyd: Personal Papers Are Protected By The Privilege Against Self-Incrimination, Aaron M. Clemens

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article delineates the extent that personal papers and diaries are protected against being used to incriminate a person who had been compelled to produce them. It examines the way the Fifth Amendment privilege has been interpreted by the United States Supreme Court in relation to personal papers, places this jurisprudence in context, and posits a conclusion based on the Court's recent trends. It concludes that the Court should not allow American law enforcement officials to compel examination of a person's personal papers yet prosecute this person based on these compelled disclosures.

Undergraduate Borrowing: A Study Of Debtor Students And Their Ability To Retire Undergraduate Loans, Steven A. Harrast Nov 2004

Undergraduate Borrowing: A Study Of Debtor Students And Their Ability To Retire Undergraduate Loans, Steven A. Harrast

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This study finds that at one university, college major, ethnicity, grade point average, age, and number of semesters required to complete a degree are relevant in determining the student loan debts of recent college graduates. Gender is found to be irrelevant in determining student loan balances. A large percentage of recent graduates have student loans in excess of lender-recommended levels leading to concerns that the benefits of higher education are being slowly eroded by the increasing debt burdens of graduates.

System–On–A–Programmable–Chip Development Platforms In The Classroom, Tyson S. Hall, James O. Hamblen Nov 2004

System–On–A–Programmable–Chip Development Platforms In The Classroom, Tyson S. Hall, James O. Hamblen

Faculty Works

This paper describes the authors’ experiences using a system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) approach to support the development of design projects for upper-level undergraduate students in their electrical and computer engineering curriculum. Commercial field-programmable gate-array (FPGA)-based SOPC development boards with reduced instruction set computer (RISC) processor cores are used to support a wide variety of student design projects. A top-down rapid prototyping approach with commercial FPGA computer-aided design tools, a C compiler targeted for the RISC soft-processor core, and a large FPGA with memory is used and reused to support a wide variety of student projects.

Re-Reifying Data, James Gibson Nov 2004

Re-Reifying Data, James Gibson

There's a war on between those who view digital technology as a reason to expand intellectual property law and those who oppose this expansion. One front in the war is technological: the pro-expansionists enclose their products in restrictive code, which the anti-expansionists circumvent and hack. A second is legislative: the pro-expansionists seek extended copyright duration, favorable changes to contract law, and other new legal entitlements, while the anti-expansionists lobby for the opposite. And a third front is a combination of the first two: it is technological. On this battlefield, the pro-expansionists use the law to fortify their technological protections. But …

Saudi Medical Journal

The current study reports the first family with confirmed myofibrillar myopathy MFM in the Middle East and the third family worldwide. This study highlights the importance of considering MFM in young patients presenting with idiopathic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia or atrioventricular block in the Gulf states. This is the first report that presented 2 different types of cardiomyopathy and 2 different indications of permanent pacemaker placement in the same generation of a family with MFM. This report studies a Qatari family consisting of one brother and 3 sisters. The brother had restrictive cardiomyopathy at the age of 16 years. One sister underwent …

Little is known regarding risk factors for stroke among the Arabic population in Gaza. To identify potential risk factors we investigated compliance with the therapeutic regimen and life style factors which may increase the risk for stroke. METHODS: To research this study question, a pair matched case control study was conducted in Gaza Strip (Shefa Hospital, Nasser Hospital, Khan Younis Hospital, and related primary health care clinics) in 2001 (from January through to December) among …

Combined Parathyroid Adenoma And An Occult Papillary Carcinoma, Abdul-Wahed N. Meshikhes, Mohammed S. Butt, Basima A. Al-Saihati Nov 2004

Combined Parathyroid Adenoma And An Occult Papillary Carcinoma, Abdul-Wahed N. Meshikhes, Mohammed S. Butt, Basima A. Al-Saihati

Saudi Medical Journal

Although the pathological association of thyroid and parathyroid disease is common, the association of both parathyroid adenoma and thyroid cancer is rare. We report here a case of a 45-year-old Saudi woman who was diagnosed to have primary hyperparathyroidism due to a single parathyroid adenoma as confirmed biochemically and radiologically. At operation, the adenoma was found to be an intrathyroid and therefore a thyroid lobectomy was performed. Histology of the excised lobe revealed in addition to the intrathyroid parathyroid adenoma a concurrent occult thyroid papillary carcinoma. This interesting association is discussed based on a literature review.

The Effect Of Income Taxation On Consumption And Labor Supply, James P. Ziliak, Thomas J. Kniesner Nov 2004

The Effect Of Income Taxation On Consumption And Labor Supply, James P. Ziliak, Thomas J. Kniesner

Center for Policy Research

We estimate the incentive effects of income taxation in a life-cycle model of consumption and labor supply that relaxes the standard assumption of strong separability within periods. Our model permits identification of both within-period preference parameters and lifecycle preference parameters such as the inter-temporal substitution elasticity. Results indicate that consumption and hours worked are direct complements in utility, and both increase with an increase in the after-tax share and with a compensated increase in the net wage. The compensated net wage elasticity is about 0.3, nearly double the standard estimates for men in the United States that ignore within-period non-separability …
