Nietzsche On Truth And The Will, Steven Michels Nov 2004

Nietzsche On Truth And The Will, Steven Michels

Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications

The fundamental — and many would say lingering — challenge to Nietzsche concerns how he can ground the will to power, given what he says about metaphysics as a philosophic prejudice. Does his teaching not topple of its own weight/lessness? It is the standard objection to which all postmodern philosophers must respond. This article examines what Nietzsche says about the limits of truth and the role that experience and perspective have in setting standards by which we might live correctly. The will to power, Nietzsche instructs, is a claim on truth, confirmed only to the extent that it serves life …

Long-Residency Hydration, Cation Binding, And Dynamics Of Loop E/Helix Iv Rrna-L25 Protein Complex, Neocles B. Leontis, Kamila Réblová, Nad'a Špačková, Jaroslav Koča, Jiří Šponer

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Molecular dynamics simulations of RNA-protein complex between Escherichia coli loop E/helix IV (LE/HeIV) rRNA and L25 protein reveal a qualitative agreement between the experimental and simulated structures. The major groove of LE is a prominent rRNA cation-binding site. Divalent cations rigidify the LE major groove geometry whereas in the absence of divalent cations LE extensively interacts with monovalent cations via inner-shell binding. The HeIV region shows bistability of its major groove explaining the observed differences between x-ray and NMR structures. In agreement with the experiments, the simulations suggest that helix-alpha1 of L25 is the least stable part of the protein. …

The Welcome Theory: An Explanation For The Decreasing Number Of African Americans In Baseball, David C. Ogden Nov 2004

The Welcome Theory: An Explanation For The Decreasing Number Of African Americans In Baseball, David C. Ogden

Communication Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The percentage of African Americans on the rosters of major league baseball teams is at a 30-year low, while the percentage of Caucasian players in the major leagues has remained relatively stable. Research indicates that the number of African Americans will continue to drop. The Welcome Theory uses several theoretical perspectives to explore why African Americans have turned away from baseball and embraced other sports, such as basketball. The theory has implications for designing sports programs that socialize youth into sports.

The Effect Of The Walking Speed On The Stability Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficient Knee, Nikolaos Stergiou, Constantina O. Moraiti, Giannis Giakas, Stavros Ristanis, Anastasios D. Georgoulis Nov 2004

The Effect Of The Walking Speed On The Stability Of The Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficient Knee, Nikolaos Stergiou, Constantina O. Moraiti, Giannis Giakas, Stavros Ristanis, Anastasios D. Georgoulis

Journal Articles

Background. The reasons behind the development of future pathology in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament deficiency are unknown. This is due to the lack of appropriate methods to assess functional dynamic knee stability. In this study, we investigated the effect of walking speed on the functional dynamic stability of the anterior cruciate ligament deficient knee. We defined functional dynamic stability as local stability or the sensitivity of the knee to small perturbations. The natural stride-to-stride variations that exist during locomotion reflect exactly the presence of these perturbations. We hypothesized that speed will affect local stability in the deficient knee, …

Madison Christian School Administrative Database, Pamela Rowland Nov 2004

Madison Christian School Administrative Database, Pamela Rowland

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

The need for a database system at Madison Christian School (MCS) is examined. An investigation of current processes identifies the need for stored data that is easy to access and easy to use. Currently paper data is stored in a file cabinet. It is not easy to manipulate, and reports must be generated by hand. MCS needed a database that a teacher with little computer skills could easily access and use while considering that an administrator would use the database for data manipulation and storage. Microsoft Access is used to develop the database as it is an easy-to-use interface that …

Sustained Growth In Nebraska, Saeed Ahmad, John Austin, Tom Doering, Ernie Goss, Bruce Johnson, Mike Lundeen, Donis Petersan, Franz Schwarz, Eric Thompson, Keith K. Turner

Economics Faculty Publications

National Macroeconomic conditions are favorable for future expansion of income, employment, and revenue in Nebraska. In particular, the U.S. economy is now in the heart of an expansion expected to persist over the three year forecast period. The principal engine of growth will be a sustained expansion in private sector investment and consumption demand. However, the rate of growth in the national economy likely will be moderate rather than rapid. At least three factors will act to moderate growth. The first is higher energy prices. Rapid growth in global demand is expected to keep prices for oil and natural gas …

Nebraska’S Community Airports: A Study Of Organizational, Financial, And Management Practices: Summary Report, Jerry Deichert, David J. Drozd, Robert F. Blair, Aleksandra Tepedelenova

Past Publications

Rural and non-metropolitan public-use and general aviation airports play a critical role in the economic development of communities in agricultural states and states with dispersed populations. Not only do they serve as a vital link to markets and resources for both agricultural and non-agricultural businesses operating in the community, small airports provide needed transportation options for area residents. These airports also perform an important function in providing needed health and medical transport services in non-metropolitan locations. Airports can be described as critical “public assets” with needed services to the local community (Penney 2003).

Phlebotomine Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) Collected In Mukusu, Machakos District, Kenya And Their Nocturnal Flight Activity, Eiko Kan, Christopher O. Anjili, Rajindar K. Saini, Toshitaka Hidaka, John I. Githure

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

This is the first report on the nocturnal flight activity of the phlebotomine sandflies in the field by trap collection in Mukusu, Masinga, the kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis in humans) area in Kenya. A total of 514 sandflies were collected with three different types of traps (sticky traps, CDC light traps and a goat-baited trap), and seven species of two genera (Sergentomyia and Phlebotomus) were identified. The number of Sergentomyia bedfordi Newstead individuals captured was the largest among these seven species. This suggests that S. bedfordi is the most common among the seven species in Mukusu. The result of the sticky …

The Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium At Yale: Advancing The Study Of Industry And Environment, Marian Chertow, Weslynne Ashton, Radha Kuppalli

Yale School of the Environment Publications Series

Industrial symbiosis (IS), a sub-field of industrial ecology, is principally concerned with the cooperative management of resource flows through networks of businesses as a means of approaching ecologically sustainable industrial activity. Isolated researchers in a broad range of disciplines have investigated industrial symbiosis from a variety of starting points without a common agenda. The Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium was held in January 2004 at Yale University, bringing together more than 30 experts from 15 countries to discuss critical questions and issues in this emerging area. The purpose of the Symposium was to give researchers an opportunity to share their knowledge and …

Foraging Patterns Of Male Tiaris Olivacea (Yellow-Faced Grassquits) In Different Flock Sizes, November 2004, Chai Blair-Stahn Nov 2004

Foraging Patterns Of Male Tiaris Olivacea (Yellow-Faced Grassquits) In Different Flock Sizes, November 2004, Chai Blair-Stahn

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Flock sizes can have both positive and negative consequences on foraging time of birds. It has been shown that increased flock size decreases any given bird’s time spent scanning for predators and will allow them to increase their foraging time. In this paper I study male Tiaris olivacea (Yellow-faced Grassquits) in different flock sizes in the San Luis Valley, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. A total of 21 groups of T. olivacea were recorded in sizes of 1-50. No significant correlation was found between group size and time spent foraging by males when all data points were analyzed (p = 0.0553, R …

Trail Fidelity In Atta Cephalotes, November 2004, Amy Romer Nov 2004

Trail Fidelity In Atta Cephalotes, November 2004, Amy Romer

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Trail fidelity in Atta cephalotes was tested through marking experiments by comparing the movement of 500 marked workers that were removed but replaced on the same trail with the movement of a separate group of 500 marked workers that were displaced to a new trail. Trail fidelity was very high for replaced workers: 94% of workers observed at a census 24 hours after marking remained on the original trail. Trail fidelity was such a strong force in displaced ant behavior that by 24 hours after marking 74% had returned to their original trail. This indicates that worker ants are orientated …

High Variation In Impact In Point Source Pollution On Water Quality And Macroinvertebrate Communities In A Tropical Highland Stream, November 2004, Sarah A. Gruber Nov 2004

High Variation In Impact In Point Source Pollution On Water Quality And Macroinvertebrate Communities In A Tropical Highland Stream, November 2004, Sarah A. Gruber

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study measured the water quality around four different point sources of pollution along the Río Guacimal in Monteverde, Costa Rica. To get a complete view of the water quality both biotic and abiotic factors were measured: by collecting macroinvertebrates and testing for seven different biochemical properties. The macroinvertebrate community makeup of the Río Guacimal was dominated by flatworms and commonly included segmented worms, which are absent in pristine streams of the Monteverde area (Moore 2004). A Family biotic index (FBI) (Resh et al. 1996) was used to determine the health of the water according to the macroinvertebrate composition. The …

Worker Size, Load Mass, Speed, And Foraging Efficiency In Atta Cephalotes, November 2004, Zaynab Rezania Nov 2004

Worker Size, Load Mass, Speed, And Foraging Efficiency In Atta Cephalotes, November 2004, Zaynab Rezania

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Optimal foraging models have been utilized extensively in the analysis of foraging behavior. Applied to the leaf-cutter ants, Atta cephalotes, these models may identify variables that affect individual and colony foraging efficiency. One colony of A. cephalotes in Cañitas, Costa Rica, was studied to determine the relationships between ant size, load mass, foraging speed, and efficiency. Head width, foraging speed, and load mass were measured for 150 individuals, and efficiency and load/ant size ratio were calculated. The relationships between these variables were analyzed using linear and logarithmic regressions. Ant head width and load mass showed a positive relationship (p < 0.0001), as did head width and foraging speed (p < 0.0001). There was no significant relationship between load mass and speed when individuals of all head sizes were included in a linear regression, however, when separated into small, medium, and large head size groups, linear regressions showed a significant relationship for the small (p < 0.0001) and medium size groups ( p = 0.0007). There were positive correlations between ant head size and efficiency (p < 0.0001), as well as between load mass and efficiency (p < 0.0001). Ant head size and the load/ant size ratio also showed a positive relationship (p < 0.0001). These results indicate that larger ants achieve greater foraging efficiency than smaller ants. In addition, it may be more efficient to transport heavier loads, despite their negative effect on foraging speed. There are many compromises involved in optimal foraging models, as increasing one aspect of efficiency may reduce another.

The Miami Barrel: An Innovation In Forensic Firearms Identification, Thomas G. Fadul Jr. Nov 2004

The Miami Barrel: An Innovation In Forensic Firearms Identification, Thomas G. Fadul Jr.

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The scientific foundation in firearm and tool mark identification is that each firearm/tool produces a signature of identification (striation/impression) that is unique to that firearm/tool, and through examining the individual striation/impressions; the signature can be positively identified to the firearm/tool that produced it. There is no set number of matching striations that are needed for concluding an identification. The inability to identify fired bullets to individual Glock pistols resulted in an in-depth study of Glock's polygonal rifled barrels, which resulted in the manufacturing of the Miami/EBIS Gun Barrel. This research study provided the scholarly research that was needed to determine …

Valorizing Racial Boundaries: Hegemony And Conflict In The Racialization Of Filipino Migrant Labour In The United States, Richard Baldoz Nov 2004

Valorizing Racial Boundaries: Hegemony And Conflict In The Racialization Of Filipino Migrant Labour In The United States, Richard Baldoz

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This article examines the role of the “racial state” in delimiting the socio-economic mobility of Filipino immigrants in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. I illustrate how racial statecraft was deployed to restrict the access of Filipino immigrants to citizenship, family formation and land ownership through exclusionary racial criteria. I argue that the state instituted ascribed racial categories as the principal means of differentiating the civic status and social resources available to racialized collectivities. Filipino immigrants in the United States offer an interesting case study because of their status as colonial subjects of the United …
