Effects Of Shift Work On Employee Retention: An Examination Of Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment, And Stress-Based Explanations, Kristin Elizabeth Charles Nov 2004

Effects Of Shift Work On Employee Retention: An Examination Of Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment, And Stress-Based Explanations, Kristin Elizabeth Charles

Dissertations and Theses

Shift work is becoming increasingly prevalent in our society, with 17% of the full-time work force and 36% of the part-time work force working non-standard shifts (Beers, 2000). The goal of this study was to explore the relationships between several shift work variables and retention of employees working in a retail organization that is open 24-hours a day. Results indicated no significant differences between workers in fixed versus mixed shift schedules on job satisfaction or role stress. Contrary to my hypothesis, mixed shift workers reported higher levels of commitment and remained with the organization longer than fixed shift workers. As …

Periodic Autonomic Dysfunction Without Pain In A Patient With Cluster Headache, Avi Ashkenazi, Stephen Silberstein Nov 2004

Periodic Autonomic Dysfunction Without Pain In A Patient With Cluster Headache, Avi Ashkenazi, Stephen Silberstein

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Cluster headache (CH) is characterized by episodes of severe unilateral headache accompanied by symptoms of cranial parasympathetic hyperactivity and sympathetic dysfunction that occur in cluster periods. Positron emission tomography (PET) studies have demonstrated evidence of a central generator of CH attacks located in the posterior-inferior hypothalamus. It has been suggested that the autonomic symptoms in CH result from reflex activation of the superior salivatory nucleus secondary to activation of the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC). However, several cases of CH-like symptoms with no head pain have been documented.

We describe a patient who had suffered from typical episodic CH for two …

Dynamic Mechanical (Brush) Allodynia In Cluster Headache, Avi Ashkenazi, William B. Young Nov 2004

Dynamic Mechanical (Brush) Allodynia In Cluster Headache, Avi Ashkenazi, William B. Young

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Cutaneous allodynia is the perception of pain when a non-noxious stimulus is applied to normal skin. It has been described in patients with migraine. Cutaneous allodynia is caused by sensitization of central nervous system neurons that receive convergent sensory input from both skin and intracranial structures. This phenomenon has not been previously described in patients with cluster headache. Although migraine and cluster headache (CH) may share some clinical features, the pathogenesis of these two primary headaches is different. The aim of this study was to examine the occurrence of dynamic mechanical (brush) allodynia (BA) in patients with CH.

Estimating Survival Probabilities Of Unmarked Dependent Young When Detection Is Imperfect, Paul M. Lukacs, Victoria J. Dreitz, Kenneth P. Burnham, Fritz L. Knopf Nov 2004

Estimating Survival Probabilities Of Unmarked Dependent Young When Detection Is Imperfect, Paul M. Lukacs, Victoria J. Dreitz, Kenneth P. Burnham, Fritz L. Knopf

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

We present a capture-recapture modeling approach to the estimation of survival probability of dependent chicks when only the attending adult bird is marked. The model requires that the bird's nest is found prior to hatching and that the number of eggs that hatch are counted. Subsequent data are sightings of the marked adult and a count of chicks with the adult. The model allows for imperfect detection of chicks, but the number of chicks can never exceed the number of eggs in the nest (i.e., adults cannot adopt chicks). We use data from radio-tagged adult Mountain Plovers (Charadrius montanus …

Perceptions Of Terrorism And Disease Risks: A Cross-National Comparison, Neal Feigenson, Daniel Bailis, William Klein

Missouri Law Review

This article seeks to demonstrate why is important for policy makers to understand how people evaluate health and safety risks. This type of understanding is essential to communicate policy and to anticipate public reactions. Current events have caused many people across the globe to feel more at risk than previous generations, making this inquiry especially relevant.

Fear, Irrationality, And Risk Perception, Henry L. Chambers Jr. Nov 2004

Fear, Irrationality, And Risk Perception, Henry L. Chambers Jr.

Missouri Law Review

This brief commentary makes two points. The first is that fear can play multiple roles in any decision-making process. The second is that accurately determining whither reactions to fear are irrational is a complex task. Though neither point necessarily requires that symposium participants abandon their position, together they suggest that extreme care is necessary in developing policy prescriptions based on the claim that fear can trigger irrationality.

War Fever Symposium:, Geoffrey R. Stone Nov 2004

War Fever Symposium:, Geoffrey R. Stone

Missouri Law Review

As Justice Robert Jackson observed more than half a century ago, “[i]t is easy, by giving way to the passion, intolerance and suspicion of wartime, to reduce our liberties to a shadow, often in answer to exaggerated claims of security.” Indeed, the United States has a long and unfortunate history of overreacting to the dangers of wartime. Again and again, Americans have allowed fear to the better of them. Some measure of fear, of course, is inevitable—even healthy—in time of war. Otherwise, it would be difficult, if not impossible, for a nation to make the sacrifices war demands. An essential …

The appeal rate is 39.6 percent in tried cases compared to 10.0 percent of nontried cases. For cases with definitive judgments, the appeal filing rate is 19.0 percent in nontried cases and 40.9 percent in tried cases. The Pluralistic Foundations Of The Religion Clauses, Steven H. Shiffrin Nov 2004

The Pluralistic Foundations Of The Religion Clauses, Steven H. Shiffrin

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Contemporary Supreme Court interpretations suggest that the religion clauses are primarily rooted in the value of equality. The United States Supreme Court has argued that in the absence of discrimination against religion (or the presence of other constitutional values), there is no violation of the Free Exercise Clause when a statute inadvertently burdens religion. Similarly, equality values have played a strong role in the Court's Establishment Clause jurisprudence. Many distinguished commentators have pointed to the equality focus and have argued that it gives insufficient attention to the value of religious liberty. Professor Shiffrin argues that these commentators are right in …

Missouri's Requirements For Federal Habeas Corpus Review: An Analysis Of Exhaustion And Tolling Of Statutes Of Limitations, Aubree J. Jehle Nov 2004

Missouri's Requirements For Federal Habeas Corpus Review: An Analysis Of Exhaustion And Tolling Of Statutes Of Limitations, Aubree J. Jehle

Missouri Law Review

This summary contends that exclusion of discretionary review by the Missouri Supreme Court from the available list of remedies will not impart the statute of limitation for two reasons. First, in Missouri, the right to apply for discretionary transfer is guaranteed by the state constitution. If the statute of limitation for federal habeas corpus petitions were not tolled by a prisioner’s pending application for discretionary transfer, state prisoners would be forced unfairly to choose between state and federal constitutional rights. Second, the characterization of a particular state remedy as “extraordinary” for exhaustion purposes should not affect its character as “direct” …

The Role Of Silence And Avoidance In Interpersonal Conflict, Alexia Georgakopoulos Nov 2004

The Role Of Silence And Avoidance In Interpersonal Conflict, Alexia Georgakopoulos

Peace and Conflict Studies

Conflict is an inevitable process in relationships. Effective strategies must be used to manage conflict accordingly. If one is to understand how to incorporate effective strategies when dealing with conflict, the emotional experience related to conflict must be understood. The expression of anger is the emotion most associated with conflict; therefore, anger is an important emotion in the assessment of conflict. Anger is associated with arousal that may be traced to have its roots in the evolution of humankind. The emotion of anger is in part biological which links it to dispositional properties and to another extent largely communicative as …
