Exploring The Relationship Between Critical Resource Variables And School Performance In Secondary Schools Of Mukono Uganda, Christopher Byalusago Mugimu Nov 2004

Exploring The Relationship Between Critical Resource Variables And School Performance In Secondary Schools Of Mukono Uganda, Christopher Byalusago Mugimu

Theses and Dissertations

While good facilities and resources are assumed to affect the quality of teaching and school performance, findings of the growing body of research about resources and school performance remain obscure and highly contested. A central question in effective schooling research is to what extent do resources translate into school performance particularly in impoverished communities of the developing countries. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between school-level financial, physical, and human resources on school performance as measured by aggregated UCE exam scores in 63 secondary schools. This study is grounded in the strategic theoretical perspective of …

Low Power Technology Mapping And Performance Driven Placement For Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Hao, Li Nov 2004

Low Power Technology Mapping And Performance Driven Placement For Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Hao, Li

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As technology geometries have shrunk to the deep sub-micron (DSM) region, the chip density and clock frequency of FPGAs have increased significantly. This makes computer-aided design (CAD) for FPGAs very important and challenging. Due to the increasing demands of portable devices and mobile computing, low power design is crucial in CAD nowadays. In this dissertation, we present a framework to optimize power consumption for technology mapping onto FPGAs. We propose a low-power technology mapping scheme which is able to predict the impact of choosing a subnetwork covering on the ultimate mapping solution. We dynamically update the power estimation for a …

An Event Driven Single Game Solution For Resource Allocation In A Multi-Crisis Environment, Rashmi S. Shetty Nov 2004

An Event Driven Single Game Solution For Resource Allocation In A Multi-Crisis Environment, Rashmi S. Shetty

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The problem of resource allocation and management in the context of multiple crises occurring in an urban environment is challenging. In this thesis, the problem is formulated using game theory and a solution is developed based on the Nash equilibrium to optimize the allocation of resources to the different crisis events in a fair manner considering several constraints such as the availability of resources, the criticality of the events, the amount of resources requested etc. The proposed approach is targeted at managing small to medium level crisis events occurring simultaneously within a specific pre-defined perimeter with the resource allocation centers …

Metacow: A Public-Domain, High-Resolution, Fully-Digital, Noise-Free, Metameric, Extended-Dynamic-Range, Spectral Test Target For Imaging System Analysis And Simulation, Mark Fairchild, Garrett Johnson

Presentations and other scholarship

Standard, easily accessible, test targets have long served the field of color imaging as a foundation for comparison of the performance of various imaging systems and algorithms and the open and meaningful exchange of research results. This paper details the creation and application of a new digital color test target useful for research and development of color imaging systems. The target has several advantages over previous types of targets that include spatial resolution, dynamic range, spectral resolution, metameric properties, lack of noise, and continuous tonal variations. All these features can be important for visual assessment, computational analysis, and colorimetric evaluation. …

3d Simulation Of Prints For Improved Soft Proofing, Rohit Patil, Mark Fairchild, Garrett Johnson Nov 2004

3d Simulation Of Prints For Improved Soft Proofing, Rohit Patil, Mark Fairchild, Garrett Johnson

Presentations and other scholarship

A display tool has been developed to perform simulation and three-dimensional rendering of prints in the quest towards achieving improved soft proofing capabilities. It was desired through this 3D simulation that the gloss and surface properties of hard-copy prints be represented on a display, which are absent in current 2D soft proofing workflows. The procedure is described along with the relevant historical work. The major components of the workflow are identified as: the gloss prediction model, and the representation of this gloss on a display using computer graphics rendering techniques. Psychophysical experiments were carried out to evaluate the usefulness of …

Testing Hdr Image Rendering Algorithms, Jiangtao Kuang, Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Garrett Johnson, Mark Fairchild

Presentations and other scholarship

Eight high-dynamic-range image rendering algorithms were tested using ten high-dynamic-range pictorial images. A large-scale paired comparison psychophysical experiment was developed containing two sections, comparing the overall rendering performances and grayscale tone mapping performance respectively. An interval scale of preference was created to evaluate the rendering results. The results showed the consistency of tone-mapping performance with the overall rendering results, and illustrated that Durand and Dorsey’s bilateral fast filtering technique and Reinhard’s photographic tone reproduction have the best rendering performance overall. The goal of this experiment was to establish a sound testing and evaluation methodology based on psychophysical experiment results for …

Counting Of Mostly Static People In Indoor Conditions, Amit A. Khemlani Nov 2004

Counting Of Mostly Static People In Indoor Conditions, Amit A. Khemlani

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The ability to count people from video is a challenging problem. The scientific challenge arises from the fact that although the task is pretty well defined, the imaging scenario is not well constrained. The background scene is uncontrolled. Lighting is complex and varying. And, image resolution, both in terms of spatial and temporal is usually poor, especially in pre-stored surveillance videos. Passive counting of people from video has many practical applications such as in monitoring the number of people sitting in front of a TV set, counting people in an elevator, counting people passing through a security door, and counting …

On Kamisar, Killing, And The Future Of Physician-Assisted Death, Norman L. Cantor Nov 2004

On Kamisar, Killing, And The Future Of Physician-Assisted Death, Norman L. Cantor

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

In a famous 1958 article, Yale Kamisar brilliantly examined the hazards of abuse and of slippery slope extensions that subsequently, for 46 years, served to thwart legalization of physician-assisted death (PAD). This paper shows that during the same period law and culture have effectively accepted a variety of ways for stricken people to hasten death, with physicians involved in diverse roles. Those ways include rejection of nutrition and hydration, terminal sedation, administration of risky analgesics, and withholding or withdrawal of medical life support.

If these existing lawful modes of hastening death were widely acknowledged, the pressure to legalize voluntary active …

Modelling Distance Functions Induced By Face Recognition Algorithms, Soumee Chaudhari Nov 2004

Modelling Distance Functions Induced By Face Recognition Algorithms, Soumee Chaudhari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Face recognition algorithms has in the past few years become a very active area of research in the fields of computer vision, image processing, and cognitive psychology. This has spawned various algorithms of different complexities. The concept of principal component analysis(PCA) is a popular mode of face recognition algorithm and has often been used to benchmark other face recognition algorithms for identification and verification scenarios. However in this thesis, we try to analyze different face recognition algorithms at a deeper level. The objective is to model the distances output by any face recognition algorithm as a function of the input …

P. Herc. 1570 Pieces 4, 5, 6a, 6b: [Philodemi] [De Divitiis], Joseph Anton Ponczoch Nov 2004

P. Herc. 1570 Pieces 4, 5, 6a, 6b: [Philodemi] [De Divitiis], Joseph Anton Ponczoch

Theses and Dissertations

P. Herc. 1570 is an unedited papyrus extant in seven pieces that together measure ca. 1.6 m. long; these are contained in five frames in the Officina dei Papiri Ercolanesi “Marcello Gigante” at the Biblioteca Nazionale “Vittorio Emanuele III&rduo; in Naples, Italy. Like many of the Herculaneum papyri, P. Herc. 1570 has remained unedited largely because of the great difficulty with which traces of letters can be discerned on its surface. It was unrolled more than fifty years after its discovery, as one of ca. 1,100 papyri that were unearthed during the excavation of first-century Herculaneum (1752-1754); but it was …
