Combination Of Cdf And D0 Results On The W Boson Mass And Width, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

The results based on 1992–95 data (Run 1) from the CDF and D0 experiments on the measurements of the W boson mass and width are presented, along with the combined results. We report a Tevatron collider average MW =80.456±0.059 GeV. We also report the Tevatron collider average of the directly measured W boson width ΓW=2.115±0.105 GeV. We describe a new joint analysis of the direct W mass and width measurements. Assuming the validity of the standard model, we combine the directly measured W boson width with the width extracted from the ratio of W and Z boson …

Developing Design Agencies' Competences: From Craftsmanship To Consulting., Anssi Tuulenmaki Nov 2004

Developing Design Agencies' Competences: From Craftsmanship To Consulting., Anssi Tuulenmaki

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper focuses on the relationship between design agencies and their clients. The paper aims to reveal how such relationships have developed towards higher levels of value creation. What kind of knowledge and processes are needed from agencies’ point of view in order to improve their service offerings? How could they move from limited execution role, i.e. craftsmanship, more towards the business development and business-consulting role? To address the topic we interviewed senior executives of six major Finnish design agencies, one international design agency and 23 of agencies’ present or potential clients. Interviews lasted 60-120 minutes each; all of them …

Bridging Cultures In Electronic Communication New Multiliteracy Models For Interaction Design., Patricia Search Nov 2004

Bridging Cultures In Electronic Communication New Multiliteracy Models For Interaction Design., Patricia Search

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In my research I am developing new multiliteracy models for computer interface design. These design models are derived from dynamic, time-based communication structures used in oral communication in Indigenous cultures. The research uses visual patterns to represent the changing semantic structures in an interactive information space where there are numerous networks of associations. These multiliteracy models integrate the semiotics of early oral cultures with the semiotics of modern electronic communication. They reflect pluralistic, aural-visual, community-based communication styles that differ from Western perspectives of temporal sequencing, logical analysis, and fixed hierarchies. For these reasons these designs have important implications for improving …

The Design Of The Edge As Cultural Activity: Towards A Dislocation Of The Greek Logos., Konstantinos Ioannidis Nov 2004

The Design Of The Edge As Cultural Activity: Towards A Dislocation Of The Greek Logos., Konstantinos Ioannidis

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The vital relation between coastline and human emotion has been projected within every possible rhetoric means (from poetry and painting to literature and cinema) but never before had this relation played the most affective role to our behavior than nowadays where cities are determined to return these areas back to citizens and restore all these notions-meanings that have, so violently, been removed from the urban waterfront as a result of the socio-economic changes of the last decades. But in most times this effort is muddied by amateurish attempts at generalization with standardized architectural practices which develop more or less customary …

Urban Design: Not Just 'Delight', But 'Commodity' And 'Firmness' As Well., Ina Klaasen Nov 2004

Urban Design: Not Just 'Delight', But 'Commodity' And 'Firmness' As Well., Ina Klaasen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In 1961, in The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs stated 'A city can not be a work of art'. 40 years later this message has not yet reached most urban designers. Influenced by the discipline of architecture the achievement of experiential value, particularly in cultural and aesthetic respects, guided by personal form concepts, is the central issue. The focus is on final processes with a relatively large temporal grain: the transformation of urban area (counted in years or decades). (http://www.bk.tudelft.nl/onderzoek/portfolio/ (Research Theme Urbanisme 02-2004). The New Charter of Athens (The European Council of Town Planners, 2003) …

Ecological Sustainability Integration In Australian Industrial Design Education., Mariano Ramirez Nov 2004

Ecological Sustainability Integration In Australian Industrial Design Education., Mariano Ramirez

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Industrial designers play a significant role in seeking out alternative solutions to the wasteful lifestyles of contemporary society. But how has the design education community responded to the challenge? Is ecological sustainability now sufficiently integrated within industrial design academic programs? Do studio projects engage students into long-term visioning into the environmental implications of their design outcomes? Does mainstream studio thinking include the minimization of ecological impacts of the products and systems that are created? Are academics and students adequately informed of strategies for ecological product development (ecodesign), and if they are, do they apply those in their design endeavours? Are …

The London Coffee Bar 'Problem' Of The 1950s - An Eclectic Design Challenge To The Universalism Of Modernism., Matthew Partington Nov 2004

The London Coffee Bar 'Problem' Of The 1950s - An Eclectic Design Challenge To The Universalism Of Modernism., Matthew Partington

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In his 1957 article, ‘Shoes, Hair and Coffee’, Toni del Renzio identified London coffee bars as one of the places where, ‘a real and genuine popular modern architecture is being created, as outstanding and as anonymous as the gipsy baroque of the fairground used to be. It is in undeniable opposition to the timid, dull and understated pretentiousness that does duty for modern English architecture.' This paper will compare this description of a ‘genuine popular modern architecture’ with other articles about coffee bars in the design and architecture journals of the mid nineteen fifties4.

Embodied Interaction - Designing Beyond The Physical-Digital Divide., Pelle Ehn, Per Linde Nov 2004

Embodied Interaction - Designing Beyond The Physical-Digital Divide., Pelle Ehn, Per Linde

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The physical and digital worlds are wide apart. Each has its own design professionals: product designers and human-computer interaction experts. However, as computers are becoming ubiquitous, embedded in our everyday objects and environments and embodied in the way we experience them in our everyday lives, this divide becomes problematic. This dilemma is accentuated by the parallel threat of demassification, the potential loss of material and social properties when artefacts become digital. In this paper we argue for embodied interaction as a useful stance for designing beyond this physical-digital divide. This term has been coined by Paul Dourish in the phenomenological …

Socially Responsible Branding., Debra Satterfield Nov 2004

Socially Responsible Branding., Debra Satterfield

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This research examines the relationship between branding elements, product identifiers, and other design elements and the consumers’ ability to make accurate product selections. It will consider the role of design variables such as form, color, position, proximity, unity and variety in helping consumers discriminate between brand-related products.

A Framework For The Visual Representation Of Spatial Information On The Web., Chun-Wen Chen, Manlai You, Sang-Chia Chiou Nov 2004

A Framework For The Visual Representation Of Spatial Information On The Web., Chun-Wen Chen, Manlai You, Sang-Chia Chiou

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Map is a natural way to represent spatial information. Nowadays it’s also very popular to get map service on the Web. Although such maps are mainly to provide information about places for people’s daily life, they may not be well designed to fulfill the functions. Most electronic maps on the Web, or so-called Web maps, follow the forms of traditional topographic maps, not like the pictorial maps in our daily life. For the limitation of screen resolution and file size on the web, it’s not even feasible to transfer large high-resolution illustration-like map to the Web. We would like to …

Kinds Of Anthropomorphic Form., Carl Disalvo, Jodi Forlizzi, Francine Gemperle Nov 2004

Kinds Of Anthropomorphic Form., Carl Disalvo, Jodi Forlizzi, Francine Gemperle

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper is a report on ongoing basic design research into anthropomorphic forms in design. With this research, we are building a core of design knowledge to inform both design studies and design practice. Our intention is to present an understanding of anthropomorphic forms that can be used for the interpretation and critique of existing forms and provide guidance in the use of anthropomorphic forms in new products. Towards these ends we are interested in three fundamental questions; what are the kinds of anthropomorphic forms, how are anthropomorphic forms created, and how are anthropomorphic forms used. In this paper we …

Models Of Design Intervention., Gisele Raulik Nov 2004

Models Of Design Intervention., Gisele Raulik

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper investigates National/Regional design initiatives and specifically those aimed at the small and medium business sector (SMEs)a. The role of such SME organisations is generally seen as critical to both economic and social development of their countries. The term ‘Design Intervention’ has been coined to express that area of ‘Design Initiative or Advisory Activity’, which actually delivers or acts as what we believe can be easily comprehended as a “bridge” between companies and design resources. The aim of this study is to understand how this bridge has been set up by various initiatives, what key issues are common faced, …

The Appropriateness Of Things., Norman Lawrence, Ian Montgomery Nov 2004

The Appropriateness Of Things., Norman Lawrence, Ian Montgomery

This paper discusses the concept of design appropriateness as a multisensory and multiperceptory experience. It presents examples and examines key issues related to the perception of design in controlled and free environments. It also comments upon the role of memory in perceived appropriateness.

Invisibility Of Design Research In Practice., Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl Nov 2004

Invisibility Of Design Research In Practice., Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Communities of practice that focus on research or professional practice within the same discipline are often distinct and can easily fail to intersect. Each forms its own discourse and protects specific territory. An example of such a separation is research and practice in design. With the growth of graduate programs and particularly Ph.D.s in design, it is reasonable to expect the development of research useful to design and expect an increase in sophisticated performance-in-practice based on research. Or is it? Varieties of research are not only based on different presuppositions, they also function in different ways. Research based on history …

Comparing Human-Centered Design Methods From Different Disciplines: Contextual Design And Principles., Mark Notess, Eli Blevis Nov 2004

Comparing Human-Centered Design Methods From Different Disciplines: Contextual Design And Principles., Mark Notess, Eli Blevis

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The human-computer interaction (HCI) community has developed primarily among those trained in computer science and psychology. Design methodologies within HCI tend to address the needs and interests of those who have been trained in cognitive science, human factors, or software engineering. This paper illuminates the similarities, distinctions and opportunities existing between one of the better known HCI methodologies, Contextual Design, and an encapsulation of the oral tradition of studio-based design methods that we call PRInCiPleS. PRInCiPleS forms part of the curriculum in HCI design at the Indiana University School of Informatics. We present a case study wherein both methods were …

Design How-To-Know: Towards A Domain-Specific Ontology., Frances Joseph Nov 2004

Design How-To-Know: Towards A Domain-Specific Ontology., Frances Joseph

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The title of this paper implies a repositioning of the notion of ‘design know how’ as tacit knowledge developed through practical experience into a questioning of the identity and being of design. This is not to valorise one form of knowing (through practice) over another (through cognition), but to imply a certain fuzziness about the definition, purpose and meaning of design. While this paper addresses issues of design, ontology and computation in relation to certain philosophical and theoretical positions, it is important to emphasise that my engagement comes from a practical involvement and concern with ‘design problems’ arising from the …

Translating And Extending Gestalt Grouping Principles To Include Time To Establish A Research Framework In Which To Study Motion., Jinsook Kim, Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl Nov 2004

Translating And Extending Gestalt Grouping Principles To Include Time To Establish A Research Framework In Which To Study Motion., Jinsook Kim, Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper introduces the grouping principles of Gestalt in motion. The motion attributes of speed, direction and duration are embedded in two events: transformation, meaning the act of changing in appearance, and transposition, meaning the act of moving position in space. In extending Gestalt principles from 2D, the following investigations will be visually demonstrated. 1 What is “closeness” in time that can explain proximity in motion? 2 What is “likeness” in time that can explain similarity in motion? 3 What is “absence but presence” in time that can explain closure in motion? 4 What is “correspondence” in time that can …

Colour Emotions For Real Objects., Li-Chen Ou, Ming Ronnier Luo, Andrée Woodcock Nov 2004

Colour Emotions For Real Objects., Li-Chen Ou, Ming Ronnier Luo, Andrée Woodcock

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Colour patches have been widely used by designers in developing colour schemes and sometimes by customers in colour selection. It is important to clarify whether colour patches show the same emotional effect as those by real objects. In our previous study, several colour science based colour-emotion models were developed for colour patches. To see whether these models can be applied to real objects, a psychophysical experiment was carried out in a real-sized room where the following four items were presented: coloured vases, coloured walls, tablecloth, and carpet. The experiment was divided into ten sessions and the walls were painted ten …

A Comparative Study On Colors In Traditional Palaces Of Korea, China And Japan., Young-Soon Park, Hyun-Jung Lee, Eun-Jeong Kim Nov 2004

A Comparative Study On Colors In Traditional Palaces Of Korea, China And Japan., Young-Soon Park, Hyun-Jung Lee, Eun-Jeong Kim

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of colors in the traditional palaces in Korea, China and Japan. The architectural skills of Korea and Japan were primarily originated from China, but the architectural forms and skills of three nations are very different from each other. Therefore it is very meaningful to study the characteristics of traditional architectures among three nations. It is to be noticed that the common characteristics of the three palaces were natural colors from their own environments and culture based on humanism. However the color styles were revealed very different from each other. …
