Reflections On Contemporary Design Education: The Green Map System As A Tool For A Better Understanding Of Sustainable Practices., Paulo Souza, Alessandro Dos Santos Faria Nov 2004

Reflections On Contemporary Design Education: The Green Map System As A Tool For A Better Understanding Of Sustainable Practices., Paulo Souza, Alessandro Dos Santos Faria

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The main focus of this paper is Design Education and the need for implementing sustainability concepts within design disciplines. This approach reflects the urgently need of searching new methodologies in order to find the needs of the present without compromising the future generations ability in finding their own needs, according to the World Commission on Development and Environment, 1987. In this sense, some changes in design methodologies, particularly in design education, are discussed and pointed out as a matter of priority. The perspective of sustainability imposes new concepts of development, new social behavior and new cultural paradigms, which can be …

Cyber-Rates: A Platform For Understanding Designer's Kansei., Jorge C Sanabria Nov 2004

Cyber-Rates: A Platform For Understanding Designer's Kansei., Jorge C Sanabria

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The objective of this research was to categorize Internet users by identifying their cyber-rate (abilities and activities when browsing on the Internet) and use this categorization as a platform for exploring designers’ perception abilities and therefore improve information-design on the Internet. Comparing low and high ranking subjects might be a window for understanding the way kansei (Japanese for emotions, feelings, perception, etc.) acts in the brain. In the first stage, Internet users were interviewed about their abilities and categories were obtained. Based on the Protocol Analysis Method, subjects were asked to execute eight tasks on the Internet and were recorded …

Grounding Knowledge From Other Fields In Communication Design., Peter Storkerson Nov 2004

Grounding Knowledge From Other Fields In Communication Design., Peter Storkerson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper presents a model for framing knowledge based on the needs of communication design (design) and a way of using knowledge from other fields to develop an integrated body of design knowledge including both theory and findings. It focuses on the challenges of appropriating and translating knowledge from other fields into design knowledge. It uses theory and experiment to examine: 1 A notion of knowledge that is appropriate to design. 2 The use of findings and research methods from other fields within design. 3 Developing a specific, design oriented body of knowledge starting with insights and research findings from …

The Difference Between In-House And Contracted Industrial Designers: An Australian Perspective., Erik Bohemia Nov 2004

The Difference Between In-House And Contracted Industrial Designers: An Australian Perspective., Erik Bohemia

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper discusses the results of a sub-section of a larger survey that measured the performance of employed and contracted industrial designers on 25 functional areas, as well as the importance of these functions to the organisations. The study found that perceptions varied between organisations that used in-house and those that contracted out industrial designers on various measures. For example, the contracted industrial designers significantly under-performed on seven functions compared to in-house industrial designers. They have not performed significantly better than in-house industrial designers on any function. The results of this research could be used to guide educational institutions in …

Context-Sensitive Design: Bridging Viewpoints For Human-Centered Design., Keiichi Sato Nov 2004

Context-Sensitive Design: Bridging Viewpoints For Human-Centered Design., Keiichi Sato

DRS Biennial Conference Series

As new technologies such as wireless networking and ubiquitous computing are implemented in various application areas, it enables to form seamless technological environments to support our work and daily life. While such technologies provide possibilities for developing new categories of products and systems, understanding contexts of use is becoming increasingly important to predict how new products can be accepted, understood, incorporated, used, and valued in people's lives. The term ‘context’ has been loosely defined and inconsistently used in design practice to represent various factors and conditions surrounding and influencing the use of the system. The performance of interactive systems is …

Variation In The Experience Of Teaching Design: The Community Of Practice Dimension., Linda Drew Nov 2004

Variation In The Experience Of Teaching Design: The Community Of Practice Dimension., Linda Drew

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper explores conceptions of teaching held by academics in departments of design and explores links between those conceptions and the communities of practice associated with the subject context. This paper explores the qualitatively different ways that teachers of design experience their teaching. The study focuses on teachers of practice based subjects in design. Much of the work which has examined teachers’ conceptions built on research frameworks that also explored students conceptions and approaches to learning. Studies of conceptions of teaching have ranged from the phenomenographic (e.g. Martin and Balla, 1991; Prosser et al 1994) to those studies of belief …

Meta-Design: Putting Owners Of Problems In Charge., Gerhard Fischer Nov 2004

Meta-Design: Putting Owners Of Problems In Charge., Gerhard Fischer

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Meta-Design is a design methodology which has the potential to transform many application areas, including: system design (customization, personalization, tailorability, end-user development, open source and open systems, living systems); architectural design (underdesign, support for “unself-conscious culture of design”); teaching and learning (teachers as facilitator, learning communities, courses-as-seeds, self-directed learning, the emergent is a necessity); and, interactive art (collaboration, co-creation, put the tools rather than the object of design in the hands of users).

Building Research Across The Marketing-Psychology-Design Trilogy., Daniela Buchler, Philippa Ashton Nov 2004

Building Research Across The Marketing-Psychology-Design Trilogy., Daniela Buchler, Philippa Ashton

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper seeks to find links between concepts and research methods in Marketing, Psychology and Design using product differentiation as the central theme of the investigation. It focuses on the possibilities of cross–paradigm research and shows linking differentiation and perception is both original and lacking: “although many writers seem to imply that differentiation is based on customer perceptions, the connection between the intentions of the firm, and the subsequent perceptions of the customer is not well explained” (McGovern, 1987:5). Design in this context is the ‘hub’ that, by giving meaning to products, links aspects of marketing and psychology. One study …

The Study Of Taiwan Aboriginal Culture On Product Design., Tyan-Yu Wu, Chi-Hsien Hsu, Rungtai Lin Nov 2004

The Study Of Taiwan Aboriginal Culture On Product Design., Tyan-Yu Wu, Chi-Hsien Hsu, Rungtai Lin

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Taiwan aboriginal art and craft is one of the most beautiful and primitive cultures, which displays a strong characteristic within Taiwan art, especially in its primitive form and symbolic meaning. These characteristics have a potential to generate a unique product to enhance the significant localized culture, among Global market. However, the decline of Taiwan aboriginal cultures makes us rethink its perspective in design for the extension of aboriginal culture. The motive of this study attempts to extend the Taiwan aboriginal culture by adding cultural value into consumer products and, furthermore to promote its cultural identity in the global market.

Grounding Design In Complexity., Silvia Pizzocaro Nov 2004

Grounding Design In Complexity., Silvia Pizzocaro

DRS Biennial Conference Series

As the frontier of present interdisciplinary sciences, complexity thinking can provide models to approach design research issues. Adaptation to the demands of a complex world requires to generate knowledge, and design knowledge, operating within a context of complexity, more than ever requires expanded and integrated ways of thought. Although the relationship between design and complexity has been explored for decades, the theory of complexity has only recently started to influence the debate in the professional community. Considering design as a wide dimension of making and planning disciplines, here it will be assumed not only that design theory and design thinking …

The Role Of Asynchronous Communication In Mediated Team Design., Andrée Woodcock, Stephen Ar Scrivener, L C Chen Nov 2004

The Role Of Asynchronous Communication In Mediated Team Design., Andrée Woodcock, Stephen Ar Scrivener, L C Chen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Research in CSCW has focused largely on synchronous forms of communication. However, there are strong arguments for suggesting that domains such as design, where there is a need for globalisation and to produce designs quickly and cheaply, will continue to rely on asynchronous communication. The survey of practicing designers reported here revealed that computer-mediated asynchronous communication forms a significant component of both local and remote design communication, is superceding conventional modes of remote communication and is likely to become increasingly important. In this paper we explore the affordances of asynchronous communication over synchronous modes and postulate ways in which the …

Detection Of Bacterial Cells And Antibodies Using Surface Micromachined Thin Silicon Cantilever Resonators, Demir Akin, Amit Gupta, Rashid Bashir

Other Nanotechnology Publications

This article describes a surface micromachined cantilever beam-based resonator for biological sensing applications. The study used a novel microfabrication technique of merged epitaxial lateral overgrowth (MELO) and chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) to fabricate thin, low stress, single-crystal silicon cantilever beams. The vibration spectra of the cantilever beams, excited by thermal and ambient noise, was measured in air using a Dimension 3100 Series scanning probe microscope (SPM), and in certain cases, a Polytec MSV300 laser Doppler vibrometer. The sensors were used to detect the mass of Listeria innocua bacteria by applying increasing concentration of bacteria suspension on the same cantilever beams …

Putting Humpty Dumpty Back Together: Pricing In Anticommons Property Arrangements, Ben Depoorter, Sven Vanneste Nov 2004

Putting Humpty Dumpty Back Together: Pricing In Anticommons Property Arrangements, Ben Depoorter, Sven Vanneste

George Mason University School of Law Working Papers Series

Recently, a new theory has drawn considerable attention in the literature on common property. A number of scholars have pointed to the danger of excessive propertization in the context of what are termed "anticommons" property regimes. Although this theory has found its way into numerous legal and economic applications, the empirical and cognitive foundations of the theory of fragmentation remain unexplored. Based on experimental data, this Article conducts an investigation into the social and personal processes involved in the anticommons.

The results confirm the theoretical proposition that anticommons deadweight losses increase with the degree of complementarity between individual parts and …
