Deminer [the Victim] started demining in his lane no. 47. He set off a P4 MK1 antipersonnel mine with his right foot by stepping on it 07:10 am. Explosion occurred 2 meters from the end of the 27 meter long cleared lane in already cleared area. Deminer fell down to his front. He was not injured except for small scratch in his little finger due to falling. His boots did not suffer any damage.

Reconstitution Of Copii Vesicle Fusion To Generate A Pre-Golgi Intermediate Compartment, Dalu Xu, Jesse C. Hay Nov 2004

Reconstitution Of Copii Vesicle Fusion To Generate A Pre-Golgi Intermediate Compartment, Dalu Xu, Jesse C. Hay

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

What is the first membrane fusion step in the secretory pathway? In mammals, transport vesicles coated with coat complex (COP) II deliver secretary cargo to vesicular tubular clusters (VTCs) that ferry cargo from endoplasmic reticulum exit sites to the Golgi stack. However, the precise origin of VTCs and the membrane fusion step(s) involved have remained experimentally intractable. Here, we document in vitro direct tethering and SNARE-dependent fusion of endoplasmic reticulum-derived COPII transport vesicles to form larger cargo containers. The assembly did not require detectable Golgi membranes, preexisting VTCs, or CON function. Therefore, COPII vesicles appear to contain all of the …

Nonlinear Parallel And Perpendicular Diffusion Of Charged Cosmic Rays In Weak Turbulence, Andreas Schalchi, John William Bieber, William H. Matthaeus, Gang Qin Nov 2004

Nonlinear Parallel And Perpendicular Diffusion Of Charged Cosmic Rays In Weak Turbulence, Andreas Schalchi, John William Bieber, William H. Matthaeus, Gang Qin

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The problem of particle transport perpendicular to a magnetic background field is well known in cosmic-ray astrophysics. Whereas it is widely accepted that quasi-linear theory (QLT) of particle transport does not provide the correct results for perpendicular diffusion, it was assumed for a long time that QLT is the correct theory for parallel diffusion. In the current paper we demonstrate that QLT is in general also incorrect for parallel particle transport if we consider composite turbulence geometry. Motivated through the recent success of the so-called nonlinear guiding center theory of perpendicular diffusion, we present a new theory for parallel and …

The Practice Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann Nov 2004

The Practice Of The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This paper

This paper lays out some of the basics of a language-based, person-centered, or agentic model of practice for nonprofit organizations, voluntary action and philanthropy within the emerging domain of commons theory. Six principles are identified for the practice of commons. Two threats to the production of common goods - bureaucratization and colonization of the life world - are discussed and evaluated as limitations of the practice of commons.

Keller, Bernard, Bronx African American History Project Nov 2004

Keller, Bernard, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Bernard Keller was born on November 14 1952 and he lived in Washington Houses on 99th street until he was 8. His parents were Mable and Howard senior. He has two brothers and two sisters. His ancestry on both sides is African-American, not carribean. His father worked in the Housing Authority and his mother, once he and his siblings had grown up, worked as a school aid. However, both his mother and his father had only a rudimentary education, though this did not prevent them from encouraging their children to do well in school and go to college. When …

The Nuclear Reddening Curve For Active Galactic Nuclei And The Shape Of The Infrared To X-Ray Spectral Energy Distribution, C. Martin Gaskell, René W. Goosmann, Robert R. J. Antonucci, David H. Whysong Nov 2004

The Nuclear Reddening Curve For Active Galactic Nuclei And The Shape Of The Infrared To X-Ray Spectral Energy Distribution, C. Martin Gaskell, René W. Goosmann, Robert R. J. Antonucci, David H. Whysong

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present extinction curves derived from the broad emission lines and continua of samples of 72 radio-loud and 1018 radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The curves are significantly flatter in the UV than curves for the local interstellar medium. The reddening curves for the radio-quiet Large Bright Quasar Survey quasars are slightly steeper than those of the radio-loud quasars in the UV, probably because of additional reddening by dust farther out in the host galaxies of the former. The UV extinction curves for the radio-loud AGNs are very flat. This is explicable with slight modifications to standard Mathis-Rumpl-Nordsieck dust models: …

Mechanism And Control Of High-Intensity-Laser-Driven Proton Acceleration, T. Lin, K. Flippo, M. Rever, Anatoly Maksimchuk, Donald P. Umstadter Nov 2004

Mechanism And Control Of High-Intensity-Laser-Driven Proton Acceleration, T. Lin, K. Flippo, M. Rever, Anatoly Maksimchuk, Donald P. Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

We discuss the optimization and control of laser-driven proton beams. Specifically, we report on the dependence of high-intensity laser accelerated proton beams on the material properties of various thin-film targets. Evidence of star-like filaments and beam hollowing (predicted from the electrothermal instability theory) is observed on Radiochromic Film (RCF) and CR-39 nuclear track detectors. The proton beam spatial profile is found to depend on initial target conductivity and target thickness. For resistive target materials, these structured profiles are explained by the inhibition of current, due to the lack of a return current. The conductors, however, can support large propagating currents …

Consultation With School Personnel, Susan M. Sheridan, Richard J. Cowan Nov 2004

Consultation With School Personnel, Susan M. Sheridan, Richard J. Cowan

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Consultation services in school settings is gaining increased recognition in research, training and practice, and is expanding to include a variety of related professionals as consultants (e.g., special educators, counseling psychologists, community psychologists, speech pathologists; Gutkin & Curtis, 1999). There also appears to be a trend in increased consultation between medical professionals (e.g., general physicians, pediatricians, psychiatrists) and school personnel. Whereas the term consultation may have broad meanings across educational, medical, and psychological practice, one common feature is that consultation generally consists of two or more people working together to address concerns regarding a third-party client (Sheridan & Kratochwill, 1991). …

Squared Extrapolation Methods (Squarem): A New Class Of Simple And Efficient Numerical Schemes For Accelerating The Convergence Of The Em Algorithm, Ravi Varadhan, Ch. Roland Nov 2004

Squared Extrapolation Methods (Squarem): A New Class Of Simple And Efficient Numerical Schemes For Accelerating The Convergence Of The Em Algorithm, Ravi Varadhan, Ch. Roland

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We derive a new class of iterative schemes for accelerating the convergence of the EM algorithm, by exploiting the connection between fixed point iterations and extrapolation methods. First, we present a general formulation of one-step iterative schemes, which are obtained by cycling with the extrapolation methods. We, then square the one-step schemes to obtain the new class of methods, which we call SQUAREM. Squaring a one-step iterative scheme is simply applying it twice within each cycle of the extrapolation method. Here we focus on the first order or rank-one extrapolation methods for two reasons, (1) simplicity, and (2) computational efficiency. …
