Visiones Del Desencanto: Nostalgia Y Melancolía En El Cine De Fernando Fernán-Gómez Y José Luis Garci, Oscar Pereira Zazo

September 11, 2001: An Individual Media Dependency Perspective, Tyrone Hamilton Glade Nov 2004

September 11, 2001: An Individual Media Dependency Perspective, Tyrone Hamilton Glade

Theses and Dissertations

This study uses individual media dependency (IMD) to examine student dependency on the media before and during the attacks of September 11. A content analysis of media journals kept by a group of university students during the week of September 11 confirmed the existence of the IMD relationship, a finding that adds to the methodological breadth of IMD research. Goal scope, which is composed of the understanding, orientation, and play goals narrowed to the goal of social understanding on September 11 only to expand outwards to pre-September 11 levels by the end of that week. The theory postulates goal scope …

Facts: Shortly before the election for Prime Minister in 2001, the Knesset passed a law that gave certain persons an entitlement to grants for the purchase or extension of an apartment in Jerusalem. After the election, some six weeks later, the Knesset suspended the grants, and went so far as to include a provision to the effect that the suspension of the grants was retroactive, from the date on which the grants originally came into effect. The petitioners challenged this retroactive suspension of the grants, on the grounds that they had relied on the grants and undertaken to buy or …

Control Of Mitochondrial Motility And Distribution By The Calcium Signal: A Homeostatic Circuit., Muqing Yi, David Weaver, György Hajnóczky

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles in cells. The control of mitochondrial motility by signaling mechanisms and the significance of rapid changes in motility remains elusive. In cardiac myoblasts, mitochondria were observed close to the microtubular array and displayed both short- and long-range movements along microtubules. By clamping cytoplasmic [Ca2+] ([Ca2+]c) at various levels, mitochondrial motility was found to be regulated by Ca2+ in the physiological range. Maximal movement was obtained at resting [Ca2+]c with complete arrest at 1-2 microM. Movement was fully recovered by returning to resting [Ca2+]c, and inhibition could be repeated with no apparent desensitization. The inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate- or …

Local Optical Properties, Electron Densities, And London Dispersion Energies Of Atomically Structured Grain Boundaries, Roger H. French Nov 2004

Local Optical Properties, Electron Densities, And London Dispersion Energies Of Atomically Structured Grain Boundaries, Roger H. French

Faculty Scholarship

Quantitative analysis of spatially resolved valence electron energy-loss spectra shows strong physical property contrasts for Σ5 and near Σ13 grain boundaries in Fe-doped SrTiO3, resulting in London dispersion interaction energies of 14 to 50mJ/m2 between the adjacent grains. The determination of local physical properties of grain boundary cores and the appreciable contribution of long-range London dispersion to interface energies provides new information on formation and control of interfaces in materials.

Three Strikes And You're Outside The Constitution: Will The Guantanamo Bay Alien Detainees Be Granted Fundamental Due Process?, Michael Greenberger

Faculty Scholarship

The United States Supreme Court has agreed to take up its first case arising from the War on Terror by hearing the consolidated appeals of two groups of foreign aliens who are or who had been detained at the United States Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba: Rasul v. Bush (No. 03-334) and Al Odah v. United States (No. 03-343). The cases stem from the United States' capture of several hundred prisoners in Afghanistan and Pakistan and their subsequent imprisonment at Guantanamo Bay. The prison began operation in January 2002, and approximately 90 detainees have been freed up to this time, …

The Structures Of C-C4F8 And C-C4F8¯ And The Adiabatic Electron Affinity Of C-C4F8, Gordon A. Gallup Nov 2004

The Structures Of C-C4F8 And C-C4F8¯ And The Adiabatic Electron Affinity Of C-C4F8, Gordon A. Gallup

Gordon Gallup Publications

Calculations at the 6311G(dps) level have been used to elucidate the structures of octafluorocyclobutane c-C4F8 and its negative ion c-C4F8¯. With no empirical adjustments, we obtain 0.640 eV for the adiabatic electron affi nity of c-C4F8. This may be compared with an experimental value of 0.63 ± 0.05 eV from the FALP method. c-C4F8 has unusual features in that there is an increase in symmetry, D2d to D4h, in going from the neutral molecule to the negative ion, and …

Condition Monitoring Of Squirrel-Cage Induction Motors Fed By Pwm-Based Drives Using A Parameter Estimation Approach, Behrooz Mirafzal, F. Fateh, Chia-Chou Yeh, Richard J. Povinelli, Nabeel Demerdash

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Abstract:

A rotor condition monitoring technique is presented in this paper based on a parameter estimation approach. In this technique, the stator currents, voltages and motor speed are used as the input signals, where the outputs will be the rotor's inductance, resistance and consequently rotor time constant. This approach is verified by simulation of two different induction motor cases. These simulations are buttressed by experimental data obtained for a 2-hp induction motor in the case of healthy as well as one, three and five rotor bar breakages. In these tests, the induction motor was energized from a PWM-based drive, in …

Paying The Price For Our Children’S Torts: Exploring Parental Liability Statutes Employed In The South, John Kevin Phillips Nov 2004

Paying The Price For Our Children’S Torts: Exploring Parental Liability Statutes Employed In The South, John Kevin Phillips

ExpressO

The accompanying manuscript explores the historical foundations for the common law imposition of liability upon parents for their child’s torts. The manuscript explores the adoption of the common law rules by Southern states with the exception of Louisiana and illustrates the different approaches employed in the common law versus the civil code. The manuscript then explores the growth of parental liability statutes and the alarming trend towards raising the amount of compensation even to unlimited liability coupled with almost strict liability in some Southern states.

Parental liability statutes continue to grow in importance and controversy. The present manuscript is especially …
