Ip Algorithm Applied To Proteomics Data, Christopher Lee Green Nov 2004

Ip Algorithm Applied To Proteomics Data, Christopher Lee Green

Theses and Dissertations

Mass spectrometry has been used extensively in recent years as a valuable tool in the study of proteomics. However, the data thus produced exhibits hyper-dimensionality. Reducing the dimensionality of the data often requires the imposition of many assumptions which can be harmful to subsequent analysis. The IP algorithm is a dimension reduction algorithm, similar in purpose to latent variable analysis. It is based on the principle of maximum entropy and therefore imposes a minimum number of assumptions on the data. Partial Least Squares (PLS) is an algorithm commonly used with proteomics data from mass spectrometry in order to reduce the …

Heated Bridge Deck System And Materials And Method For Constructing The Same, Christopher Y. Tuan, Sherif Yehia, Bing Chen,, Lim Nguyen Nov 2004

Heated Bridge Deck System And Materials And Method For Constructing The Same, Christopher Y. Tuan, Sherif Yehia, Bing Chen,, Lim Nguyen

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Aheated bridge deck (20) uses electrodes (24,26) embedded within conductive concrete and connected to a power Source to remove Snow and ice accumulation. A cement-based mixture containing optimal amounts of conductive materials is molded into pre-formed slabs (22) placed atop the paved Surface of a bridge deck. Alternatively, the conductive concrete may be cast in place on top of an existing bridge deck. A control unit with temperature and moisture Sensors may be coupled to the heated bridge deck.

Cooling Load Reduction And Air Conditioner Design In A 19th Century Florida House Museum, Florida Solar Energy Center, Dave Chasar Nov 2004

Cooling Load Reduction And Air Conditioner Design In A 19th Century Florida House Museum, Florida Solar Energy Center, Dave Chasar

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Restoration plans at the H.S. Williams house included the installation of a space conditioning system. This contract report details how building envelope construction and air conditioner design were optimized as a system. Many aspects of the effort lent themselves to maintaining important "character-defining" features of the building including the resurrection of passive cooling attributes like light colored exterior paint and operable storm shutters. In addition, outside air infiltration was measured on the Williams house and six other balloon-frame homes to document this often significant cooling load component.

Using A Reply Path And Handshaking Protocol To Allow For Incentives With Mix-Net Servers, Timothy J. Atkinson, Marius C. Silaghi Nov 2004

Using A Reply Path And Handshaking Protocol To Allow For Incentives With Mix-Net Servers, Timothy J. Atkinson, Marius C. Silaghi

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Sending a message to a destination anonymously so that the destination cannot figure out who the originator was, and ensuring that the message reaches the destination untampered with, can be a difficult problem. Chaum's mix-net solves this problem but offers little motivation for a person to set up a mix-net server. This paper discusses a method that not only allows monetary payments as an incentive to create a public mix-net server, but also provides some fraud detection at the time a message is being sent. Also compared with other methods, the method described here can be considered reasonable from the …

Assessing Student Reading Progress: A Comparison Of Generic And Basal Curriculum-Based Reading Probes, Kelli S. Henson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to clarify and extend previous research on the comparibility of curriculum-based measurement oral reading fluency results using reading materials from outside of the students’ curriculum for repeated measurement over time. Specifically, this study evaluated the use of generic measurement materials for monitoring student reading growth and expected gains in words read correctly per minute over time at different grade levels. Sixty-four first through third grade students were assessed twice weekly using both AimsWeb and Open Court reading probes. The dependent variables in this study were the level, which is defined as the mean of …

The Nfl And Its Money, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Now that the NFL has refocused following Towelgate in the midst of what is developing as a most interesting season on the field, it might be worth going back to two stories that flew just beneath the radar over the past few weeks. These, of course, involved money, because we are talking about the NFL Money Machine, which continues to validate Al Davis' wisdom from 1978 when he noted in the wake of a lucrative television contract that "any dummy can make money operating a pro football club."

Introduction To Mechanical Engineering, Lorik Abdullai, Joseph R. Dunn

Honors Theses

I can still remember back in high school when I was faced with a decision thousands of students experience every year: What college was I going to choose, and what major was I going to study? It seemed like every time I saw friends and relatives they asked me that question. Meanwhile, I knew that going to a major university would give me more choices in case I changed majors. As it turned out, Western Michigan University was the best package for me when I considered the financial aid, the program ofmy major, location of the university, and its friendly …
