Failure In Internally Pressurized Bent Tubes, Robin Stevenson, Boon-Chai Ng, Peter Polidoro Dec 2004

Failure In Internally Pressurized Bent Tubes, Robin Stevenson, Boon-Chai Ng, Peter Polidoro

Faculty Publications

The analysis and modeling of tube-hydroformed components is more complicated than that employed for sheet-metal panels, due to the lengthier process sequence and variable strain path - from flat-rolled sheet to tube; from straight tube to bent tube; and from bent tube to hydroformed component. These additional process steps make it difficult to determine whether post mortem analyses of tube failure during hydroforming can, and should, be conducted with the same tools and databases as used for simple stampings. To provide a partial answer, the properties of commercially fabricated welded straight tubes were evaluated using a free-expansion internal pressure test …

Examination Of Experimentally Engineered Larval Fish Habitat In The Marmet Pool, Kanawha River, West Virginia, Jonathan M. Niles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In rivers, velocity shelters are thought to serve as limiting factors in the retention and recruitment of young fish. Such shelters are formed in backwaters and tributaries, however these areas are limited in the Marmet Pool of the Kanawha River, West Virginia. In response to this concern, several structures that are thought to serve as low velocity zones were placed within the Marmet Pool. This study was conducted to evaluate the experimental rock structures (Finger and Zipper Dikes) as potential mitigation for navigational impact and to determine which sampling gears are best to sample these shallow, structurally diverse areas. The …

Trace Detection Of Mercury Using Boron-Doped Diamond Electrodes, Latha Ramakrishnan Dec 2004

Trace Detection Of Mercury Using Boron-Doped Diamond Electrodes, Latha Ramakrishnan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This Project was undertaken to develop electrochemical techniques using Boron-doped Diamond (BDD) electrodes for the purpose of detecting mercury in solutions in the ppb-ppt range. Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) was used successfully to develop calibration curves for mercury detection in standard solutions in the ppb-ppt range, followed by using these curves for mercury measurements in unknown samples. DPV experiments were performed in nitrate, thiocyanate and chloride media. Investigation in the chloride medium is important since practical samples always contain chloride impurities. The formation of calomel in chloride medium is avoided on the BDD surface by the co-deposition of 3ppm of …

Sensitivity To Molar Contingencies Of Food Presentation, Jeffrey Everly Dec 2004

Sensitivity To Molar Contingencies Of Food Presentation, Jeffrey Everly

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Twelve rats were exposed to two variable-time schedules that differed in their rates of food delivery. The "imposed" schedule was normally in effect, but lever pressing occasionally switched to the "alternate" schedule for periods averaging 30 s. Increases in food frequency afforded by switching to the alternate schedule were manipulated across conditions. All rats were exposed to the same absolute food frequency increases, but the programming of these increases was varied among the rats by holding particular food delivery rates constant across conditions. For half of the rats, the schedules were signaled. In general, response rates were directly related to …

On The Use Of Randomness In Computing To Perform Intelligent Tasks, Ryan Scott Regensburger Dec 2004

On The Use Of Randomness In Computing To Perform Intelligent Tasks, Ryan Scott Regensburger

Theses and Dissertations

The study of Artificial Intelligence attempts to simulate the processes of human intelligence in a set of computable algorithms. The purpose of Random Algorithms in this field is to provide a best-guess approach at identifying the unknown. In this thesis, research shows that random algorithms are able to break down many intelligent processes into a set of solvable problems. For example, solving puzzles and playing games involve the same estimating ability shown in standard problems such as the Coupon Collector problem or the Monty Hall problem. This thesis shows Random Algorithmic applications in two overlapping categories of intelligent behavior: Pattern …

Modeling The Spread And Prevention Of Malicious Mobile Code Via Simulation Cs-2004-15, Christopher Brian Shirey Dec 2004

Modeling The Spread And Prevention Of Malicious Mobile Code Via Simulation Cs-2004-15, Christopher Brian Shirey

Theses and Dissertations

Malicious mobile code causes billions of dollars every year in damages, and that cost keeps increasing. Traditional signature-based anti-virus software is a reactive solution that can not detect fast spreading malicious code quickly enough to prevent widespread infection. If we hope to prevent widespread infection of future malicious mobile code, new prevention techniques must be developed that either stop a new infection completely, or at least limit the spread until signature-based anti-virus software can be updated. Simulators exist that model the spread of malicious mobile code, but none currently exists that can efficiently model host-based and network-based spread prevention techniques …

Load-Based Energy Savings In Three-Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motors, Subodh Chaudhari Dec 2004

Load-Based Energy Savings In Three-Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motors, Subodh Chaudhari

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Energy is an extremely valuable resource which should be used carefully. After realizing this in the 1990's DOE started various energy efficiency measures in order to reduce the energy consumed by US industry. Motors use almost 50 percent of the electricity in the United States. If motor efficiency could be increased then energy consumption could be reduced. There have been efforts to increase motor efficiency over past decade which lead to development of premium efficiency motors. Designed motor efficiency is normally above 90 percent so motors do not waste energy. However, motor efficiency decreases when load factor is less than …

Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in the Appalachian Mountains are an important game species in West Virginia, yet angling mortality on these populations in headwater streams is poorly understood. The objectives of this study were to: (1) examine relative changes in body composition of brook trout as they fluctuate throughout the year, and to identify critical periods of survival to determine if brook trout reach critical levels of resource depletion over winter, and (2) evaluate whether angler harvest affects brook trout populations in spring in headwater streams. Body composition estimates indicated that brook trout are unlikely to reach critical levels of …

Neglected Taxonomy Of Rare Desert Fishes: Congruent Evidence For Two Species Of Leatherside Chub, Jerald B. Johnson, Thomas E. Dowling, Mark C. Belk Dec 2004

Neglected Taxonomy Of Rare Desert Fishes: Congruent Evidence For Two Species Of Leatherside Chub, Jerald B. Johnson, Thomas E. Dowling, Mark C. Belk

Faculty Publications

Conservation biologists rely heavily on taxonomy to set the scope for biological monitoring and recovery planning of rare or threatened species. Yet, taxonomic boundaries are seldom evaluated as falsifiable hypotheses that can be statistically tested. Here, we examine species boundaries in leatherside chub (Teleostei, Cyprinidae), an imperiled desert fish native to the Bonneville Basin and upper Snake River drainages of western North America. Recent molecular data hint that this fish could be composed of two distinct taxa that are geographically separated into northern and southern species. To formally test this hypothesis, we evaluated leatherside chub using several different categories of …

The Concept And Its Double: Power And Powerlessness In Hegel's Subjective Logic, Lain Macdonald Dec 2004

The Concept And Its Double: Power And Powerlessness In Hegel's Subjective Logic, Lain Macdonald

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article explores the duality of power and powerlessness in Hegel's Subjective Logic, highlighting the tension between the Concept's absolute power and its susceptibility to powerlessness. Hegel portrays the Concept as an infinitely powerful force that unifies diversity through self-related negativity, yet acknowledges that reason can be powerless when fixated on determinate concepts, leading to one-sidedness. This duality suggests that while reason has the capacity for self-correction, it perpetually confronts the challenge of abstraction and determinateness.

The Types Of Universals And The Forms Of Judgment, Richard Dien Winfield Dec 2004

The Types Of Universals And The Forms Of Judgment, Richard Dien Winfield

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article argues that the forms of judgment are central to objective thought and knowledge, critiquing Kant for failing to account for their diversity and proposing a systematic approach to understanding judgment starting from the concept itself. It explores Hegel's differentiation of judgment forms through self-development, emphasizing the necessity of understanding universals and their interrelations.

The End Of Hegel's Logic: Absolute Idea As Absolute Method, Angelica Nuzzo Dec 2004

The End Of Hegel's Logic: Absolute Idea As Absolute Method, Angelica Nuzzo

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article examines the conclusion of Hegel's Wissenschaft der Logik, focusing on the transition from the absolute idea to the absolute method. It argues that the absolute method is not merely the culmination of the logical process but is essential for establishing the speculative science of logic, which underpins Hegel's philosophical system. The absolute method rescues the logical development from non-dialectical thinking, providing a synoptic reconstruction that justifies the necessity of the system and leads to Realphilosophie.
