There are several methods for materials simulation. Ab initio or first principles methods are used to solve the quantum mechanical equation which govern the behavior of a system. Ab initio calculation of the optical and electronic properties of solids is fundamental in solid state physics. APW+lo is used to examine different properties of BeS, BeSe and BeTe. Beryllium compounds show different features in structure under different pressures, and they also show a phase transition from Zinc blende to Hexagonal transitions in II-VI semiconductors. Geochemical data from closely spaced vertical intervals in a hydrocarbon-impacted aquifer were used to assess the relationship between bulk conductivity and zones of enhanced microbial activity. The bulk conductivity was measured using in situ vertical resistivity probes. Microbial activity was verified using terminal electron acceptors (nitrate, sulfate, iron, and manganese), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and major ion chemistry. Peaks in bulk conductivity in the aquifer overlapped with zones where nitrates and sulfates were depleted, total petroleum hydrocarbon, iron, manganese, dissolved ions, and DIC were elevated, suggesting a link between higher electrical conductivity and zones of enhanced microbial activity stimulated by …

Registered nurses (RNs) are the lifeblood of hospitals. Therefore, retaining skilled nurses is necessary to insure the viability of these institutions. A two-year longitudinal, non-experimental research study utilized a descriptive design to compare the perceptions of RNs who remained on their units to those who left or changed units over a two-year time period. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether there was a statistically significant difference between these two groups. Results in several areas indicate that further evaluation is necessary by nurse managers and administration. This information could help retain RNs as well as attract qualified nurses …

Individuals living in the Spartan-Keyes neighborhood, near the Spartan stadium, have been working with staff at the City of San Jose to reduce the amount of large truck and bus traffic in their neighborhood for several years.

Background: Pediatric asthma morbidity and mortality continues to rise in the United States despite the institution of the National Institute of Health/National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's diagnostic and treatment guidelines. This study examines the practices, knowledge and attitudes of California's pediatric and family nurse practitioners regarding the national asthma guidelines. Method: A quantitative mail-in survey of pediatric, pulmonary, emergent, urgent care, and family nurse practitioners was utilized to gather the data regarding the care of pediatric asthma patients. Power electronics based zonal DC power distribution systems are being considered for sea and undersea vehicles. the stability of the DC power electronics-based power distribution systems is a significant design consideration because of the potential for negative impedance induced instabilities. in this paper, dynamic properties and control of a buck converter feeding a downstream DC-DC converter are studied. the controller in this system combines an instantaneous current feedback loop using hysteresis with a proportional-integral algorithm to regulate the output voltage of the converter. based on a large-signal averaged model of the converter, the stability-in-large around the operation point is presented. …

We develop a new framework of multitree dictionaries which includes some previously proposed dictionaries as special cases. We show how to efficiently find the best object in a multitree dictionary using a recursive tree pruning algorithm. We illustrate our framework through several examples, including a novel block image coder which significantly outperforms both the standard JPEG and quadtree-based methods, and is comparable to embedded coders such as JPEG2000 and SPIHT.

In this paper, we propose a new geographic routing algorithm that alleviates the effect of location errors on routing in wireless ad hoc networks. In most previous work, geographic routing has been studied assuming perfect location information. However, in practice there could be significant errors in obtaining location estimates, even when nodes use GPS, hence existing geographic routing schemes will need to be appropriately modified. We investigate how such location errors affect the performance of geographic routing strategies. This paper reports a method for converting versions 5 and 6 of the GTAP Data Base into a global SAM that is stored in both the GAMS data exchange (GDX) and Header Array (HAR) formats. The focus of attention is on the generation of a SAM representation of the GTAP Data Base that is fully consistent with the GTAP model; as such the resultant SAM can be readily used to calibrate a version of the GTAP model that had been coded in GAMS. An applied general equilibrium model with oligopoly and scale economies, based on detailed plant-level data, is used to contrast the impacts of the Morocco-EU free trade area (FTA) to multilateral trade liberalization on Morocco’s economy. Simulation results show that the FTA agreement is likely to have adverse effects on Morocco due to: (a) deteriorating terms of trade, (b) reductions in output per firm in industries dominated by scale economies, (c) diversion of imports away from non-EU suppliers, and (d) potentially adverse effects on the aggregate demand for labor. We propose, analyze, and illustrate several best basis search algorithms for dictionaries consisting of lapped orthogonal bases. We improve upon the best local cosine basis selection based on a dyadic tree [10], [11], by considering larger dictionaries of bases. We show that this can result in sparser representations and approximate shift-invariance. We also provide an algorithm which is strictly shift-invariant. Our experiments suggest that the new dictionaries can be advantageous for time-frequency analysis, compression, and noise removal. We provide accelerated versions of the basic algorithm which explore various trade-offs between computational efficiency and adaptability. We show that our algorithms are …

Several new computational intelligence algorithms and their applications are investigated in this thesis. First, a linear support vector machine decision tree (LSVMDT) is developed by building a binary tree with a linear support vector machine in each tree node. It has built-in rare event detection mechanism, and allows efficient rule extraction. Secondly, an efficient recursive update algorithm when new data becomes available is derived for least squares support vector machines. This is very essential in online learning. The protein kinase Fused (Fu) is an integral member of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway. Although genetic studies demonstrate that Fu is required for the regulation of the Hh pathway, the mechanistic role that it plays remains largely unknown. Given our difficulty in developing an in vitro kinase assay for Fu, we reasoned that the catalytic activity of Fu might be highly regulated. Several mechanisms are known to regulate protein kinases, including self-association in either an intra- or an intermolecular fashion. Este trabalho relata o desenvolvimento de um sistema automático para calibração do modelo de simulação de tráfego em rodovias de pista simples TRARR, baseado em um algoritmo genético. O processo de calibração consiste em procurar valores para alguns parâmetros selecionados do simulador, de tal modo que a diferença entre as correntes de tráfego simuladas e as observadas em campo sejam minimizadas.
