Social Ministry, Congregations, And The Faith Based Initiative, Ruth L. Reimer

The purpose for this exploratory research was to find out to what extent Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) church members from a midsize Midwest City perceive social ministry programs as a priority within their church and to identify priority populations with whom they would like to see their church serve. Priority areas of service listed by the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (at risk youth, ex-offenders, homeless, hungry, substance abusers, people with HIV/AIDS, welfare to work families) were used as a framework in developing categories and used for comparisons.

We live in a global village that brings people of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds into contact. Indeed, plurality is our world context and is the context within many countries. In this paper, we shall focus on the phenomenon of our religious plurality: the challenge this reality presents, particularly to the Asia-Pacific region, and a vital response that we can make, particularly through education.

The Information Used To Judge Supportiveness Depends On Whether The Judgment Reflects The Personality Of Perceivers, Objective Characteristics Of Targets Or Their Unique Relationships, Brian Lakey, Catherine Lutz, Alan Scoboria

People who judge their relationships as more supportive enjoy better mental health than people who judge their relationships more negatively. We investigated how people made these judgments; specifically, how people weighed different types of information about targets under three different conditions: when judgments reflected the personality of perceivers, the objective characteristics of targets, and the unique relationships between perceivers and targets. Participants (i.e., perceivers) judged the same four videotaped targets on personality, similarity to perceivers and likely supportiveness. As in previous research, perceivers based their judgments on perceived target similarity to perceivers, and on target personality. However, how perceivers weighed …

The current study examined the relationship of the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality to primary and secondary psychopathic dispositions in a noninstitutionalized sample. Previous investigations suggest that Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Neuroticism are basic personality traits that characterize psychopathy. However, few studies have examined the relationship of the FFM to primary and secondary psychopathic attributes, respectively. In the current study, the relationship of the FFM using the NEO-PI-R to primary and secondary psychopathic dispositions was investigated in a sample of young adults. The objective of this research project was to evaluate the effectiveness of offset opposing left-turn lanes at signalized intersections in reducing the frequency and severity of left-turn related accidents. The Cities of Lincoln and Omaha offset opposing left-turns by widening leftturn lane lines in June 1999 at six intersections. The research team investigated traffic accident patterns between January 1994 and December 2002 at those six intersections by making comparisons with two control intersections (i.e. intersections at which left-turns were not offset by lane line widening) using a four-step research methodology. Getting Started With Collaborative Teamwork For Inclusion, Diana Lawrence-Brown, Kim S. Muschaweck

The article illustrates the collaborative team process for inclusion as it grew within two schools attempting to improve their efforts to welcome students with disabilities into general education classrooms. Team members learned specialized skills needed for successful collaboration, in the context of bringing about specific changes they deemed critical to the desired outcomes of their own projects.

Collective Bargaining In Catholic Schools: What Does Governance Have To Do With It?, John T. James

This article outlines the significant legal decisions regarding collective bargaining in Catholic Schools, identifies the governance structures employed in Catholic schools and the methods of translating these governance structures into documents required by civil law, and concludes with the citation of two recent court decisions that demonstrate the method of incorporation and the day-to-day governance practices utilized in Catholic schools that are of great importance to educational leaders.

The Retention And Attrition Of Catholic School Principals, W. Patrick Durow, Barbara L. Brock

Journal of Catholic Education

This article reports the results of a study of the retention of principals in Catholic elementary and secondary schools in one Midwestern diocese. Findings revealed that personal needs, career advancement, support from employer, and clearly defined role expectations were key factors in principals’ retention decisions. A profile of components of successful retention is included.
