Rural Initiative Program: Publications and Reports

Between the months of June and December, 2004, the Jefferson County Visitors Committee, with the assistance of the University of Nebraska’s Rural Initiative and Nebraska Cooperative Extension, conducted a survey of visitors to Fairbury and the Jefferson County area.

The survey was designed to provide information related to the activities and experiences of tourists and other visitors to the Jefferson County area, especially as related to the hospitality industry.

Understanding The Economic Factors Influencing Farm Policy Preferences, Keith H. Coble, Thomas O. Knight, George F. Patrick, Alan E. Baquet

A survey conducted in Mississippi, Texas, Indiana, and Nebraska elicited producers’ preferences for various farm policy changes. This permitted examination of the diversity of preferences that single-state studies have not allowed. Five policy choices, including deficiency payments, loan programs, crop insurance, export programs, and disaster payments were examined. Logit model results predicting producer preferences for each of the five dichotomous policy choices are reported. Explanatory variables based on expected utility theory such as risk aversion, price and yield variability, and price–yield correlation are significant in various models.

Finding qualified applicants to fill building-level administrative vacancies is a growing concern. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and define the reasons why qualified teachers who graduated from the Experiential Program for Preparing School Principals (EPPSP) at Butler University are not practicing as buildinglevel administrators. The participants in this study were five qualified teachers who completed EPPSP and remained in the classroom. These teachers were interviewed to determine why they were not practicing as building-level administrators. This study was intended to identify possible predictors for the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics. This study tested three possible predictors: 1) kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward mathematics; 2) kindergarten teachers' attitudes toward teaching mathematics; and 3) kindergarten teachers' pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics, and its relationship to predict the practice of developmentally appropriate mathematics. Four research questions were addressed: 1. The area of Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) communications systems has received enormous attention recently as they can provide a roughly linear increase in data rate by using Multiple Transmit and Receive antennas. The optimal detection strategy for a MIMO receiver is to perform a Maximum-Likelihood (ML) search over all possible transmitted symbol combinations has an exponential complexity when the constellation size of number of transmit antennas increase. A number of sub-optimal decoders, such as VBLAST, provide linear decoding only where the number of receive antennas is at least equal to the number of transmit antennas.

We present a census of correlations between activity measures and neutral resonance lines of the alkali elements Li i and K i in open clusters and star-forming regions. The majority of very young associations and star formation regions show no evidence of Li-activity correlations, perhaps because their chromospheric activity indicators have a dominant origin in accretion processes with implied disk-clearing timescales in the range of a few times 106 to $4 ;107 yr. Alkali-alkali and/or alkali-activity correlations are newly noted within IC 2391, M34, and perhaps Blanco 1 and NGC 6475. Global X-ray luminosities are not as robust indicators as …

The rapid dissemination of an arcmin-sized HETE-2 localization of the long-duration X-ray flash GRB 030528 led to a ground-based multi-observatory follow-up campaign. We report the discovery of the near-IR afterglow, and also describe the detection of the underlying host galaxy in the optical and near-IR bands. The afterglow is classified as “optically dark” as it was not detected in the optical band. The K-band photometry presented here suggests that the lack of optical detection was simply the result of observational limitations (lack of rapid and deep observations plus high foreground extinction). Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This investigation focused on the vocabulary beliefs and instructional practices of social studies teachers in intermediate and middle school grades as well as their use of teachers' manuals. Using a self-reporting survey to measure these beliefs and practices, we found some discrepancy between what teachers believe about vocabulary learning and their actual instructional practices for supporting vocabulary in teaching social studies. While their reported beliefs appear to mirror what is currently accepted as effective vocabulary instruction, their reported practices reflect more traditional notions like those found in many social studies textbook manuals. Prime ideals of strong semigroup graded rings have been characterized by Bell, Stalder and Teply for some important classes of semigroups. The prime ideals correspond to certain families of ideals of the component rings called prime families. In this paper, we define the notion of a primitive family and show that primitive ideals of such rings correspond to primitive families of ideals of the component rings.

This research deals with the validation of fluid dynamic models, used for simulating shoaling and breaking solitary waves on slopes, based on experiments performed at the Ecole Supérieure d'Ingénieurs de Marseille's (ESIM) laboratory. A separate paper, also presented at this conference, reports on experiments. In a first part of this work, a fully nonlinear potential flow model based on a Boundary Element Method (BEM) developed at the University of Rhode Island (URI), is used to generate and propagate solitary waves over a slope, up to overturning, in a set-up closely reproducing the laboratory tank geometry and wavemaker system. Concerns of racial disparity in the criminal justice system have been the subject of public attention for decades. This study examines racial disparity in Chicago arrests from 1998-2002 and compares the levels of disparity in Chicago to these the nation. The study provides an average percentage of arrests for all given years for each race/ethnic group and compares that to the percentage of the population for each race/ethnicity to see if racial disparity exists. Results suggest that the largest disparities exist for Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans for both Chicago and the nation.

BACKGROUND: A case of West Nile virus (WNV) encephalitis associated with transfusion of blood that did not react when tested for WNV by minipool (MP) nucleic acid testing (NAT) is described. A Nebraska man developed clinical encephalitis 13 days after surgery and transfusion of 26 blood components. Antibody testing confirmed WNV infection. An investigation was initiated to determine the source of this infection.

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The patient’s family members were interviewed to identify risk factors for WNV infection. Residual samples were retested for WNV RNA using transcription-mediated amplification (TMA) assay and two polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. Blood …

The Advanced Relation Model for Genome Sequence Visualization (ARM 4 GSV) is proposed in this paper. This model is adapted from an earlier visualization model which has been applied to the visualization of computer programs. A review of the fundamental model components of the earlier visualization model is given. Enhancements so as to make it applicable in genome visualization are discussed. As part of these enhancements, a relational characterization of genome sequences in terms of bases, codons, and patterns such as close inversions is developed and described. Expert consensus emphasizes the need for better recognition and accurate diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Current research on lithium, divalproex, and lamotrigine provides new insight into the effective management of this illness. Advances in identifying the mechanism of action of mood stabilization has focused on signaling pathways within the cell that are associated with neurotrophic effects. Clinical research has led to confirmatory evidence of the efficacy of lithium in all phases of bipolar disorder, with the greatest effects seen in the treatment and prevention of mania. Compared to divalproex, lithium also has been found to have greater efficacy in the prevention …
