In his novel Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier weaves an intricate web of human stories, all converging to make a memorable statement about love, war, life, and death. This study examines these stories and the mythological, literary, and folk models Frazier employs, and in some cases revises, to tell them. The first chapter explores how Frazier recreates Odysseus in Inman, his main male character, to depict the psychological trauma inflicted by war. The second chapter focuses on Ada, Inman’s pre-war sweetheart, and Ruby, a girl with whom Ada bonds, as challenges to the male pastoral tradition. Ruby’s father Stobrod as trickster, …

This thesis is examines the imperial attachment to the Suez Canal from 1875 to 1956. It begins with the canal share purchase by the Disraeli Government and ends with the Suez Crisis. Traditional scholarship views relations between the Britain and the Suez Canal as disjointed and highlighted by sporadic significant events. This thesis aims to evaluate the history of these relations. The thesis is divided into five chapters with the imperial attachment to the canal is divided into three chronological periods. The development of a standardized sensor pallet system for a C-130 aircraft was conceived by the National Guard to assist in counterdrug reconnaissance activities within the United States. This dissertation includes essays on the application of economics to areas previously thought to be the domain of sociology, psychology, and political science. Chapter 1 introduces the paths that economics has blazed into the areas of religion, charitable giving, crime, and government formation. The second chapter examines the functions that risk and time preference play in the strength of an individual's religious belief. The results illustrate that individuals treat religion like other goods exhibiting uncertainty and a delayed expected future payoff. The occurrence of right-wing extremism is becoming more prominent in the social landscape of Western European countries, including Norway, and in the United States. Amongst these movements one will find groups that base and justify their racist behavior in religious beliefs. Odinism, a pre-Christian, Norse neopagan faith, has merged racist beliefs and violent behavior with religious creed and ideology, and is a prime example of these right-wing religions.

This thesis examines the oftentimes porous boundaries that define space. Specifically, it is based on the form, function, and meaning of the boundaries of the Aventino Valley, the Majella Massif, Lama dei Peligni, and Colledimacine in Abruzzo, Italy, and emerges from the broad intersection of cultural geography, photography, literature, folklore, spatial theory, and boundary theory. In constructing a regional geographic portrait of the study area by analyzing its prominent and hidden edges, the thesis demonstrates how boundaries, as definers of physical space, are also key indicators of cultural activity. Violence is a significant occupational hazard in the American workplace. Nearly a thousand employees are murdered on the job each year and workplacehomicide has become the leading cause of death for women and the second for men. From 1993 to 1999, there were an average of 1.7 million nonfatal violent victimizations each year, accounting for 18% of all violent crime. Although government employees accounted for 18% of the U.S. workforce, they made up 37% of workplace violence victims.

A review of literature found no unified definition of workplace violence. Recent scientific research regarding this problem is rare, despite its increasing …

One question looms in the wake of genocide. Which road to reconciliation? In this thesis, I examine the concept of reconciliation in both a theoretical and applied manner. By exploring three modem cases of genocide and the reconciliatory methods used in each, I have reached the following conclusion: Though gacaca (pronounced ga-CHA-cha), an informal, traditional, tribal form of justice and truth telling, is not a perfect solution to the problems presented by genocidal conflicts, its concept of blending retributive measures and restorative practices can provide a stable platform to promote reconciliation in future post genocidal cases.

This study examined the frames used by the U.S. print media -- The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times -- in their coverage of the Kashmir conflict and the parties involved in it from 1989 to 2003. It divided the 15-year period of coverage into four phases -- 1989-1990, 1991-1998, 1999-2001, and 2002-2003 -- and focused on the coverage of seven subjects. It then identified sources and keywords from 180 news reports and placed them into categories from which it isolated thematic clusters or frames.

Trust negotiation, a new authentication paradigm, enables strangers on the Internet to establish trust through the gradual disclosure of digital credentials and access control policies. Previous research in trust negotiation does not address issues in preserving trust across multiple sessions. This thesis discusses issues in preserving trust between parties who were previously considered strangers. It also describes the design and implementation of trust preservation in TrustBuilder, a prototype trust negotiation system. Preserving trust information can reduce the frequency and cost of renegotiation. A scenario is presented that demonstrates that a server supporting trust preservation can recoup the cost of the …

The ancient inhabitants of the Maya Lowlands enjoyed a long and fruitful period of growth which climaxed at around AD 800. At that time, millions of people successfully subsisted in a challenging environment that today only supports a population a fraction of that size. These facts, and the subsequent "Maya Collapse", are the impetus of many recent studies that utilize environmental data, in addition to conventional archaeology, to investigate this Maya mystery. Whether, and, if so, why states elect to comply with international law are now the most central questions within the international legal academy. A skein of theories has been woven over the last decade to explain and predict state compliance, and a number of factors, including, inter alia, a desire to generate reciprocity, an interest in reducing transaction costs, normative commitments, domestic considerations, the degree of domestic incorporation of international legal regimes, reputational concerns, and fear of punishment, are purported to be causally linked.

It is the overall goal of this article to assess and evaluate concepts of universal jurisdiction and the interrelated right to a fair trial within the capsule of Prosecutor v. Niyonteze. This article analyzes the Niyonteze trial both within a framework of comparative law and against contemporary international law theories of universal jurisdiction and fair trial standards. In this article the term "due process" is subsumed into the larger concept of a fair trial. Likewise, a specific theory of universal jurisdiction is adopted. This article analyzes the existing concepts of the right of self-defense and preemption under international law. Part I quickly reviews both the evolution of warfare and the state of religious-based terrorism. The former presents a useful starting point for understanding customary international law and its subset, generally referred to as "the laws and customs of war. Customary international law provides context to the application and shortcomings of contemporary codified international law, and, therefore, serves an important heuristic function in understanding the international legal limits on combating this increasingly frequent form of terrorism.
