Visual Enhancing Of Tactile Perception In The Posterior Parietal Cortex, Tony Ro, Ruth Wallace, Judith Hagedorn, Alessandro Farnè, Elizabeth Pienkos Jan 2004

Visual Enhancing Of Tactile Perception In The Posterior Parietal Cortex, Tony Ro, Ruth Wallace, Judith Hagedorn, Alessandro Farnè, Elizabeth Pienkos

Publications and Research

The visual modality typically dominates over our other senses. Here we show that after inducing an extreme conflict in the left hand between vision of touch (present) and the feeling of touch (absent), sensitivity to touch increases for several minutes after the conflict. Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the posterior parietal cortex after this conflict not only eliminated the enduring visual enhancement of touch, but also impaired normal tactile perception. This latter finding demonstrates a direct role of the parietal lobe in modulating tactile perception as a result of the conflict between these senses. These results provide evidence for visual-to-tactile perceptual …

Spectral Analysis And Regularity Quantification Of Skeletal Muscle Signals As A Non-Invasive Assessment Of Muscle Activity., Israel Restus Hall

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The research presented here was carried out at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Morgantown, West Virginia. At NIOSH, there is a strong need for modes of analyzing a wealth of biomedical data. In this particular case, that data was comprised of numerous muscleinduced force-time series, derived from two groups of experimental subjects. One group was comprised of rats exposed to vibration similar to that experienced by human workers who work with certain hand-tools or equipment. The other group was a control group, not exposed …

The Relationship Between Epidural Analgesia During Childbirth And Childbirth Outcomes, Marsha Ramstad Jan 2004

The Relationship Between Epidural Analgesia During Childbirth And Childbirth Outcomes, Marsha Ramstad

Nursing

Epidural analgesia has increased in usage dramatically in the United States as a means of comfort for labor pain. Prior studies have connected epidural analgesia to an increase in cesarean birth rate, an increase in use of instrumentation, an increase in length of labor, episiotomy rate, and maternal fever. Epidural analgesia has produced additional costs to the patient and society. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between epidural analgesia during childbirth and childbirth outcomes. The data for this study were obtained from a retrospective patient record review of 200 systematically selected labor patients who delivered in …

The Role Of Joint Control In The Manded Selection Responses Of Non-Vocal Children With Autism., Joyce C. Tu Jan 2004

The Role Of Joint Control In The Manded Selection Responses Of Non-Vocal Children With Autism., Joyce C. Tu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the present study, joint control training was applied when teaching selection responses to four non-vocal children with autism. This study is a systematic replication of Tu (2001). The children were two males (ages six and seven), and two females (ages twelve and thirteen). The result showed that it was only after the joint tact/self-mimetic/sequelic control training that the symmetrical performance of manded selection responses appeared with no additional training.

Impact Of A Self-Help Intervention On Performance Of Headache Management Behaviors: A Self-Efficacy Approach, Dale S. Bond, Lynne Durrant, Kathleen B. Digre, Susan K. Baggaley, Carla Rubingh

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

This study evaluated the importance of modeling and performance accomplishment of behavior on enhancing headache management self-efficacy and increasing acquisition and implementation of four headache self-management behaviors: headache diary use, limiting medication overuse, relaxation, and stretching. Primary headache disordered patients (n = 51) were randomly assigned to 3 conditions: self-efficacy videotape treatment (SET; education + modeling and performance of behavior), information-only videotape treatment (IOT; education only), or no-treatment comparison (NTC). The SET group reported higher self-efficacy scores than the NTC at immediate post-treatment. At 1-month follow-up, the SET group reported more headache diary use than the IOT and NCT groups, …

Gains And Losses From Tax Competition With Migration, Seppo Honkapohja, Arja Turunen-Red Jan 2004

Gains And Losses From Tax Competition With Migration, Seppo Honkapohja, Arja Turunen-Red

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

We consider international labor (entrepreneur) mobility in a two-country overlapping-generations model. Interactions of decreasing and increasing returns in production yield multiple equilibria that are stable under adaptive learning. Governments have an unilateral incentive to reduce income taxes at the joint optimum. We compare the Nash equilibrium in taxes under full labor mobility to the closed economy with no mobility. Despite strategic tax setting, the free mobility outcome is often better in welfare terms. Large, discrete gains in welfare may be attained because of the tax competition. Expectational barriers for discrete welfare improvements can be overcome through tax competition.

Strategic Trading Against Retail Investors With Disposition Effects, Jouahn Nam, Jun Wang, Ge Zhang Jan 2004

Strategic Trading Against Retail Investors With Disposition Effects, Jouahn Nam, Jun Wang, Ge Zhang

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

In this paper, we study a model incorporating the retail trader's reluctance to sell into losses. We show that in this setup the informed trader always buys the asset when he receives a favorable signal. However, when the informed trader receives an unfavorable signal, he may not always sell the asset if the signal is moderately bad and the retail trader is reluctant to realize losses. Hence the good news travels faster than the bad news and the asset price exhibits steady climbs with sharp and sudden drops.

Lay Participation In The Japanese Justice System, Kent Anderson, Mark Nolan Jan 2004

Lay Participation In The Japanese Justice System, Kent Anderson, Mark Nolan

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The Authors introduce and critique Japan's proposed quasi-jury or lay assessor system (saiban-in seido). The proposed mixed-court will have judges and lay people deciding together both guilt and sentences in serious criminal cases. Its proponents have promised that the lay assessor system will produce better justice in the courts and a more democratic society for Japan. The Authors first expose the competing interests in the lay assessor drafting process, examining their subtly but importantly varied proposals. Second, the Authors historically review lay participation in Japan, arguing that it has failed to deliver better justice and more democracy because the existing …

Hope And Guidance For Parents Of Children With Ocd: A Review Of Freeing Your Child From Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder [Book Review Section], Richard J. Cowan, Susan M. Swearer Napolitano

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

A favorable review of Freeing Your Child from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by T.E. Chansky (Crown Publishers, 2004). From the review: "Closely following March and Mulle's (1998) treatment protocol, this book is guided by the philosophy that an individual with OCD must “boss back” symptoms in order to break the symptom cycle. With this approach OCD is objectified (and externalized) as a “brain bully” or enemy that can be overcome with knowledge, determination, and support. Separating the child from his/her OCD symptoms is an effective, concrete technique that children and adolescents will readily comprehend. Such a tactic reminds parents that their child …

Sociality And The Evolution Of Intelligence, Alan Kamil Jan 2004

Sociality And The Evolution Of Intelligence, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Two recently published studies provide important new data relevant to the evolution of human intelligence. Both studies of social behavior in baboons, Bergman et al. demonstrated that baboons use two criteria simultaneously to classify other troop members, and Silk et al. showed that highly social female baboons have higher reproductive success than less social females. Taken together, these studies provide strong evidence for the importance of social context in cognitive evolution.

The Media Dichotomy Of Sports Heroes And Sport Celebrities: The Marketing Of Professional Women's Tennis Players, Joshua Shuart

WCBT Faculty Publications

There is perhaps no better example of media created frenzy over heroism and celebrity than in the world of professional women’s tennis. Two of the most recognizable personalities, Venus Williams and Anna Kournikova, are known for very different reasons: Williams because of her on-court success and her rivalry with her sister Serena, Kournikova because of her on-court failures yet curiously strong endorsement success. Survey research was undertaken to examine perceptions of both women, to determine a) how society views them (as heroes or celebrities), and b) to determine their marketing worth, with regards to consumer intention to purchase an endorsed …

Evidentiary Tactics: Selecting The “Best” Evidence To Simplify The Case, Edward J. Imwinkelried, David A. Schlueter

Faculty Articles

In the early 1990s, the American Bar Association Special Committee on Jury Comprehension released the results of surveys of jurors. These jurors had participated in complex federal and state cases. The researchers asked the jurors what complaints they had against the attorneys who had tried the cases. By a wide margin, the primary complaint was that the litigators went overboard and swamped the jury with information, particularly an excessive number of exhibits.

At trial, the attorney must exorcise the demons of complexity and confusion. There are strategies and tactics that should be employed to reduce cases to manageable portions that …
