Stygobites Are More Wide-Ranging Than Troglobites, John Lamoreux

Stygobites are thought to be wider ranging than troglobites in the contiguous 48 United States. This assumption is confirmed by showing that stygobite species are recorded from more counties than troglobite species (Mann Whitney U = 80189, Z = −6.781, P < 0.0001). The properties of water flow through caves may allow greater dispersal opportunities for stygobites above the normal water table during floods and could be one reason for the larger ranges of these species.

Designing a sound cow-calf nutritional program requires knowledge of nutrient requirements, diet quality, and intake. Effectively using the NRC (1996) beef cattle requirements model (1996 NRC) also requires knowledge of dietary degradable intake protein (DIP) and microbial efficiency. Objectives of this paper are to 1) describe a framework in which 1996 NRC-applicable data can be generated, 2) describe seasonal changes in nutrients on native range, 3) use the 1996 NRC to predict nutrient balance for cattle grazing these forages, and 4) make recommendations for using the 1996 NRC for forage-fed cattle. Total mixed rations containing conventional forage sorghum, brown midrib (bmr)-6 forage sorghum, bmr- 18 forage sorghum, or corn silage were fed to Holstein dairy cows to determine the effect on lactation, ruminal fermentation, and total tract nutrient digestion. Sixteen multiparous cows (4 ruminally fistulated; 124 d in milk) were assigned to 1 of 4 diets in a replicated Latin square design with 4-wk periods (21-d adaptation and 7 d of collection). Diets consisted of 40% test silage, 10% alfalfa silage, and 50% concentrate mix (dry basis). Acid detergent lignin concentration was reduced by 21 and 13%, respectively, for the bmr-6 …

Differential display PCR (ddPCR) and complementary DNA microarray analyses were used to evaluate gene expression differences in porcine ovarian follicles between a line of pigs selected for an index of ovulation rate and embryo survival (Line I) and its randomly selected control line (Line C). Follicles (4.0 to 7.0 mm) were dissected from ovaries of multiparous sows (n = 27) at either 2 or 4 d following PGF_2α analog injection on d 12 to 14 of the estrous cycle. According to the current definition of Specific Language Impairment (SLI), the transition to word combinations can be a troublesome period for children with this impairment. The purpose of this study is to reveal if an emphasis on verbs during intervention really makes a difference in children's progress in language intervention. By examining two types of intervention - one a traditional lexicon therapy without an explicit focus on verbs, the other an intervention that included an explicit focus on facilitating the verb lexicon - this study highlights how intervention with verbs may foster a child's ability to produce word combinations. Mount Rainier, though beautiful, presents a major problem to the area around the Puget Sound. This includes the metropolitan area of Seattle, Tacoma, Olympus, Puyallup, and their suburbs. The problem is the threat of volcanic disaster. The purpose of this project was to look into the potential volcanic hazards to the area and the preparedness of the area in response to an eruption. This was done by looking at the history of the mountain, past eruptions, and emergency management plans in place. To predict an eruption now, the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption was looked at for comparison. Research on …

Recently, pattern recognition/classification has received a considerable attention in diverse engineering fields such as biomedical imaging, speaker identification, fingerprint recognition, etc. In most of these applications, it is desirable to maintain the classification accuracy in the presence of corrupted and/or incomplete data. The quality of a given classification technique is measured by the computational complexity, execution time of algorithms, and the number of patterns that can be classified correctly despite any distortion. The Western Kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis) has nested for six consecutive years in Arkansas since 1998. Eleven nests of this species were observed in the summer of 2003 in urban areas of Fort Smith (Sebastian Co.) and Van Buren (Crawford Co.). All nests were on human-made structures. Of the 11, seven (64%) were located on power stations and the remaining four (36%) were on light posts. Mean nest height was 7.92 m (n = 11nests) and the mean width of nest poles was 31.18 cm (n= 4). Visual Enhancing Of Tactile Perception In The Posterior Parietal Cortex, Tony Ro, Ruth Wallace, Judith Hagedorn, Alessandro Farnè, Elizabeth Pienkos

The visual modality typically dominates over our other senses. Here we show that after inducing an extreme conflict in the left hand between vision of touch (present) and the feeling of touch (absent), sensitivity to touch increases for several minutes after the conflict. Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the posterior parietal cortex after this conflict not only eliminated the enduring visual enhancement of touch, but also impaired normal tactile perception. This latter finding demonstrates a direct role of the parietal lobe in modulating tactile perception as a result of the conflict between these senses. Behavioural And Physiological Measurements Of Visual Performance In The Cuttlefish, Sepia Officinalis, Gillian Groeger

This thesis investigated the behaviour and physiology of the visual system of Sepia officinalis by studying systematically its visual sensitivity and its spatial resolution. The cephalopod retina is composed of only photoreceptors and supporting cells, thereby providing a unique opportunity to study the interactions between photoreceptors, without the influence of other neurons, such as those typically found in the vertebrate retina. The minimum separable angle (MSA), a measure of spatial resolution, of S. officinalis was determined from behavioural experiments to be 42' for animals of 8 cm mantle length at 15 µW/cm² light intensity.
