The Freshwater Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Boone River, North Central Iowa, Ellet Hoke Jan 2004

The Freshwater Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Boone River, North Central Iowa, Ellet Hoke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A survey of the freshwater mussels of the Boone River conducted in September 1982 documented a fauna consisting of seventeen then extant or relict species. Analysis of museum records yielded one additional species unrecovered since 1937. Subsequent to the 1982 study, additional surveys were conducted in the region in 1984-1985 and 1998-1999 as a part of two statewide surveys. A comparison of the results of the three studies suggests a significant decline in the unionid fauna in the Boone River since 1982. While it is almost certain that a real decline in the fauna has occurred, the extent of this …

The Impact Of White Pine (Pinus Strobus) On A Mollisol After Seven Decades Of Soil Development, Irina Kovda, Eric C. Brevik, Thomas E. Fenton, Maria Gerasimova Jan 2004

The Impact Of White Pine (Pinus Strobus) On A Mollisol After Seven Decades Of Soil Development, Irina Kovda, Eric C. Brevik, Thomas E. Fenton, Maria Gerasimova

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Selected chemical, physical, and macro and micromorphological properties in two pedons of a Clarion soil (Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Typic Hapludolls) formed in till parent material, one planted to white pines (Pinus strobus) for the past 75 years and the other to grass, were compared. The most obvious difference between the two was the increased biological activity under pines; the variety and quantity of excrements suggested the activity of soil microfauna and variability of species resulted in finer and better aggregation of biological origin (crumbs and granules), numerous excrements in voids, and higher total porosity under pines. The matrix was …

Simulated Changes In Shallow Groundwater And Vegetation Distributions Under Different Reservoir Operations Scenarios, Mark Cable Rains, Jeffery F. Mount, Eric W. Larsen

Geology Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study were to develop and use a linked groundwater and vegetation model to simulate groundwater and vegetation distributions in a riverine and reservoir-fringe system under different reservoir operations scenarios. This study was conducted where Little Stony Creek flows into East Park Reservoir on the east front of the Coast Range, northern California. A numerical groundwater model was used to model mean depth to groundwater during the growing season for water years 1980–1999 for each of five community types identified on the study site. Multiple vegetation models were developed, each of which described the probability that a …

Analysis Of Free Analyte Fractions By Rapid Affinity Chromatography, David S. Hage, William A. Clarke Jan 2004

Analysis Of Free Analyte Fractions By Rapid Affinity Chromatography, David S. Hage, William A. Clarke

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The invention is generally directed toward an analytical method to determine the concentration of the free analyte fraction in a sample. More particularly, the method encompasses applying a sample comprising a free and bound analyte fraction to an affinity column capable of selectively extracting the free fraction in the millisecond time domain. The signal generated by the free fraction is then quantified by standard analytical detection techniques. The concentration of the free fraction may then be determined by comparison of its signal with that of a calibration curve depicting the signal of known concentration of the same analyte.

The Other "Sex" In Lawrence V. Texas, Paisley Currah Jan 2004

The Other "Sex" In Lawrence V. Texas, Paisley Currah

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that while the Lawrence v. Texas decision was a landmark victory for sexual autonomy, it failed to address the state's ongoing role in regulating gender categories, leaving transgender individuals marginalized and legally vulnerable. The author emphasizes that the decision reinforced the state's ability to define and enforce binary sex categories, which perpetuates discrimination against transgender people. The article calls for a broader vision of sexual and gender freedom that challenges these regulatory systems.

Analysis Of Bioelectrical Tissue Conductivity In Malaysian Adults, Fatimah Ibrahim, Wan Abu Bakar Wan Abas, M.N. Taib Jan 2004

Analysis Of Bioelectrical Tissue Conductivity In Malaysian Adults, Fatimah Ibrahim, Wan Abu Bakar Wan Abas, M.N. Taib

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This paper presents the bioelectrical tissue conductivity (BETC) analysis of Malaysian adults using bioelectrical impedance. A total of 142 subjects (91(64.1) female and 51(35.9) male) with no past medical history were studied. The BETC was measured using phase angle (a), resistance (R), reactance (Xc) and body capacitance (BC). There is a significant difference (P<0.001) in the BETC mean values of the subjects. The mean phase angles measured were 7.4±0.8° and 6.3±0.6° with corresponding mean body capacitances of 818±158pF and 557±101pF for male and female, respectively. The results show that a and BC mean values are higher in the male than the female. However, the female R (635±71.5Ω) and Xc (69.9 ± 8.4Ω) were higher than the male R (504 ± 63.4Ω), and Xc (64.6 ± 6.8Ω), respectively. These results show that the BETC values in Malaysian adults are in agreement with the normal healthy subjects at large. © 2004 IEEE.

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

A 2-year-old boy with underlying congenital cyanotic heart disease presented with seizures and fever and was found to have bilateral parietal cerebral abscesses. Drainage of the pus from the abscesses was done in stages; on the day of admission, four days after admission and 3 weeks after admission. Although the pus from the first drainage did not grow any organisms, the pus from the second drainage on the fourth day of admission yielded a mixed growth of Eikenella corrodens and Streptococcus milleri. Following the second drainage of pus, the child was noted to have mild weakness (grade 3/5) and increased …

Localization Of Dengue Virus In Naturally Infected Human Tissues, By Immunohistochemistry And In Situ Hybridization, K. Jessie, M.Y. Fong, S. Devi, S.K. Lam, K.T. Wong Jan 2004

Localization Of Dengue Virus In Naturally Infected Human Tissues, By Immunohistochemistry And In Situ Hybridization, K. Jessie, M.Y. Fong, S. Devi, S.K. Lam, K.T. Wong

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Dengue viral antigens have been demonstrated in several types of naturally infected human tissues, but little is known of whether these same tissues have detectable viral RNA. We studied tissue specimens from patients with serologically or virologically confirmed dengue infections by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization ( ISH), to localize viral antigen and RNA, respectively. IHC was performed on specimens obtained from 5 autopsies and 24 biopsies and on 20 blood-clot samples. For ISH, antisense riboprobes to the dengue E gene were applied to tissue specimens in which IHC was positive. Viral antigens were demonstrated in Kupffer and sinusoidal …

Modeling Of Hemoglobin In Dengue Fever And Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever Using Bioelectrical Impedance, F. Ibrahim, N.A. Ismail, M.N. Taib, W.A.B. Wan Abas

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This paper describes a model for predicting hemoglobin (Hb) by using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in dengue patients in the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). Bioelectrical impedance measurements were conducted on 83 (47 males and 36 females) serologically confirmed dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients during their hospitalization. The predictive equation for Hb was derived using multivariate analysis. We investigated all the parameters in BIA, patients' symptom and demographic data. In this developed model, four predictors (reactance (Xc), sex, weight and vomiting) were found to be the best predictive factors for modeling Hb in dengue patients. However, …

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The analysis of circulating nucleic acids has revealed applications in the noninvasive diagnosis, monitoring, and prognostication of many clinical conditions. Circulating fetal-specific sequences have been detected and constitute a fraction of the total DNA in maternal plasma. The diagnostic reliability of circulating DNA analysis depends on the fractional concentration of the targeted sequence, the analytical sensitivity, and the specificity. The robust discrimination of single-nucleotide differences between circulating DNA species is technically challenging and demands the adoption of highly sensitive and specific analytical systems. We have developed a method based on single-allele base extension reaction and MS, which allows for the …

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Phosphorus from excess fertilizers and detergents ends up washing into lakes, creeks, and rivers. This overabundance of phosphorus causes excessive aquatic plant and algae growth and depletes the dissolved oxygen supply in the water. In this study, aluminum-impregnated mesoporous adsorbents were tested for their ability to remove phosphate from water. The surface structure of the materials was investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), a N2 adsorption-desorption technique, Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to understand the effect of surface properties on the adsorption behavior of phosphate. The mesoporous materials were loaded with Al components by reaction with surface silanol …

Over a period of 6 months from January to June 2002, an unusual increase in the isolation of highly resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains was observed in the various wards and intensive care units of a large general hospital in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. An equal number of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and drug-susceptible strains were collected randomly from swabs, respiratory specimens, urine, blood, cerebral spinal fluid, and central venous catheters to determine the clonality and genetic variation of the strains. Macrorestriction analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis showed that the 19 MDR strains were genetically very homogenous; the majority showed the dominant profile S1 …

Recombinant Expression Of The Larval Excretory-Secretory Antigen Tes-120 Of Toxocara Canis In The Methylotrophic Yeast Pichia Pastoris, M.Y. Fong, Y.L. Lau Jan 2004

Recombinant Expression Of The Larval Excretory-Secretory Antigen Tes-120 Of Toxocara Canis In The Methylotrophic Yeast Pichia Pastoris, M.Y. Fong, Y.L. Lau

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

A gene encoding the larval excretory-secretory antigen TES-120 of the dog ascarid worm Toxocara canis was cloned into the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris. Specificity of the recombinant TES-120 antigen produced by the yeast was investigated. Forty-five human serum samples from patients infected with differentparasitic organisms, including 8 cases of toxocariasis, were tested against the recombinant antigen in immunoblot assays. Results from the assays showed that the recombinant TES-120 antigen reacted with sera from toxocariasis patients only. This highly specific recombinant TES-120 antigen can potentially be used for the development of an inexpensive serodiagnostic assay for human toxocariasis.

Teaching In And Against The Empire: Critical Pedagogy As Revolutionary Praxis, Peter Mclaren, Gregory Martin, Ramin Farahmandpur, Nathalia Jaramillo Jan 2004

Teaching In And Against The Empire: Critical Pedagogy As Revolutionary Praxis, Peter Mclaren, Gregory Martin, Ramin Farahmandpur, Nathalia Jaramillo

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"All across the country, critical educators are fighting on dozens of fronts, searching in both form and content for a coherent pedagogical expression that captures their opposition to what they perceive as major developments of world-historical importance... Whilst we will mention some of these fronts in our discussion, our focus will be on expanding the concept so that it addresses both the urgency and the scope of the current crisis of capitalism in relation to the crisis of educational reform, and takes as its central aim the struggle against capitalism and imperialism."

Stygobites Are More Wide-Ranging Than Troglobites, John Lamoreux Jan 2004

Stygobites Are More Wide-Ranging Than Troglobites, John Lamoreux

KIP Articles

Stygobites are thought to be wider ranging than troglobites in the contiguous 48 United States. This assumption is confirmed by showing that stygobite species are recorded from more counties than troglobite species (Mann Whitney U = 80189, Z = −6.781, P < 0.0001). The properties of water flow through caves may allow greater dispersal opportunities for stygobites above the normal water table during floods and could be one reason for the larger ranges of these species.
