Patterns Of Early Lake Evolution In Boreal Landscapes: A Comparison Of Stratigraphic Inferences With A Modern Chronosequence In Glacier Bay, Alaska, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Daniel R. Engstrom, Stephen Juggins

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The chronosequence approach, which infers temporal patterns of environmental change from a spatial array of modern sites, has been a major tool for studying successional processes. A model of early lake ontogeny in boreal landscapes, developed from a chronosequence of lakes in Alaska, suggests that long-term soil development and related hydrological change produce a loss of alkalinity and base cations, a decrease in pH, an increase in DOC and a transient increase followed by a decrease in lakewater nitrogen concentrations over time. We compare this model of lake ontogeny with patterns of change reconstructed from diatom assemblages in 10 sediment …

Examining The Current U.S. Beef Trade Policies Concerning The Testing For Mad Cow Disease, David C. Miller

Despite existing mad cow disease surveillance efforts in the United States, in place since the 1980s, a cow that tested positive for mad cow disease was granted entrance into the U.S. in December, 2003. The cow that tested positive, according to witnesses, displayed no symptoms that are synonymous with advanced bovine spongiform encephalopathy, BSE. This occurrence had detrimental effects on the U.S. beef export market, as many countries banned American beef. Estimates of the damage inflicted reach into the billions of dollars. BSE in the U.S. has the potential of causing damages in other aspects as well. Aside from the …

Biological Sciences

Analysis of the automated computer annotation of the early draft phase genome of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM revealed the previously discovered S-layer gene slpA and an additional partial ORF with weak similarities to S-layer proteins. The entire gene was sequenced to reveal a 1799-bp gene coding for 599 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 64.8 kDa. No transcription or translation signals could be determined in close proximity to the 5′-region. However, a strong putative terminator with a free energy of −16.84 kcal/mol was identified directly downstream of the gene. A PSI-Blast analysis showed similarities to members of S-layer proteins, …

It has been noticed for a long time that humans can identify others based on their biological movement from a distance. However, it is only recently that computer vision based gait biometrics has received much attention. In this dissertation, we perform a thorough study of gait recognition from a computer vision perspective. We first present a parameterless baseline recognition algorithm, which bases similarity on spatio-temporal correlation that emphasizes gait dynamics as well as gait shapes. U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We propose a new method for predicting censored (and non-censored) clinical outcomes from a highly-complex covariate space. Previously we suggested a unified strategy for predictor construction, selection, and performance assessment. Here we introduce a new algorithm which generates a piecewise constant estimation sieve of candidate predictors based on an intensive and comprehensive search over the entire covariate space. This algorithm allows us to elucidate interactions and correlation patterns in addition to main effects.

The problem of resource allocation and management in the context of multiple crises occurring in an urban environment is challenging. Methods and apparatus for analyzing the chemical composition of vulnerable plaques with an intravascular catheter having a near-infrared light source, a fiber-optic probe, a mechanism for directing the light from the light source into a blood vessel, and detectors for detecting light reflected or scattered by the tissue. The light source may be a tunable laser, and may transmit an incident beam having a wavelength ranging from 1400 to 4100 nm. The psychological impacts of infertility have been well documented in the literature, providing evidence to support that at least some women who confront infertility are at risk for heightened distress and depressive symptoms. In response to this accumulated evidence, it has been argued that psychoeducational interventions may provide an important component to the treatment of infertility. While several theoretical models postulate the effects of stress on infertility treatment outcomes, results of these investigations have led to conflicting conclusions. This Article analyzes the issue of paternity disestablishment, an issue courts and legislatures have been struggling with over the last several years. For a variety of reasons explored in this Article, an increasing number of fathers have filed requests to set aside paternity orders seeking to be relieved of the legal obligations of fatherhood. As a result families have been destabilized and children are becoming fatherless. The implications for the future of the family are profound. Although some scholars have examined this phenomenon, none have addressed the link between paternity disestablishment and welfare reform.
