Utilization Of Juvenile Animals Studies To Determine The Human Effects And Risks Of Environmental Toxicants During Postnatal Developmental Stages, Robert L. Brent
The Selected Works of Robert Brent
Toxicology studies utilizing animals and in-vitro cellular or tissue preparations have been used to study the toxic effects and mechanism of action of drugs and chemicals and to determine the effective and safe dose of drugs in humans and the risk of toxicity from chemical exposures. Testing in animals could be improved if animal dosing using the mg/kg basis was abandoned and drugs and chemicals were administered to compare the effects of pharmacokinetically and toxicokinetically equivalent serum levels in the animal model and human. Since alert physicians or epidemiology studies, not animal studies have discovered most human teratogens and toxicities …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
In this study, we investigated the perceived professional needs of Korean science teachers majoring in chemical education, and examined their preferences for online and on-site inservice teacher training programs. The results were also compared with those of preservice teachers. Participants were 120 secondary school teachers and 67 preservice teachers, whose majors were either chemical education or science education with emphasis in chemistry. A questionnaire consisting of a modified Science Teacher Inventory of Need and a section concerning respondents’ demographic information and their use of the Internet was administered. In contrast to previous studies, the perceived needs of Korean inservice and …
Diel Activity Patterns, Space Utilization, Seasonal Distribution And Population Structure Of The Yellow Stingray, Urobatis Jamaicensis (Cuvier, 1817) In South Florida With Comments On Reproduction., Daniel P. Fahy
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The yellow stingray, Urobatis jamaicensis is the most common elasmobranch in the coastal waters of Southeast Florida. Despite their common occurrence the ecology of yellow stingrays remains poorly understood. In particular, yellow stingray daily movements, space utilization, seasonal distribution and population structure have not been described. This study was conducted to address the lack of knowledge of these fundamental life history parameters and to provide further information on the ecology of U. jamaicensis in coastal waters of Broward County, Florida.
The activity patterns and space utilization of U. jamaicensis were assessed by manual tracking with ultrasonic telemetry. Telemetry tracking of …

Part I: Evaluation Of Russian Synthetic Compounds As A Potential Source Of New Drug Leads Agains Breast And Colon Cancer Part Ii: Isolation Of Beta-Amyrin Formate From Eucalyptus Viminalis Labill And Investigation Of Its Colon Cancer Activity, Mihaela Cohanoschi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although modern medicine made great steps toward curing most diseases considered deadliest, yet cancer remains one of the major public health problems. The first part of this thesis investigates a new source of selective compounds that are potential candidates against cancer. Fifteen Russian compounds were tested in order to establish their efficiency against two types of cancer: human breast SK-Br-3 and colorectal carcinoma HT-29. The bioassay results show that seven of the new synthetic Russian compounds can be considered new drug leads, based upon their low toxicity and efficacy in slowing the growth of human breast cancer and colon cancer …

JSU Yearbooks
The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

Conjugated Linoleic Acid Metabolism And Body Fat Loss In Mice, Kim Hargrave, Brett Meyer, Jess L. Miner
Conjugated Linoleic Acid Metabolism And Body Fat Loss In Mice, Kim Hargrave, Brett Meyer, Jess L. Miner
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Mice were fed conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) with or without fish oil or aspirin, which deplete tissue arachidonic acid and block arachidonic acid metabolism, respectively. Mice fed fish oil did not lose body fat when supplemented with CLA but mice fed soy oil did. Aspirin did not alter CLA-induced body fat loss. CLA may be metabolized to an isomer of arachidonic acid to induce a loss of body fat. However, this body fat loss is apparently not mediated via alteration of prostaglandin synthesis. Understanding the regulation of body fat by CLA may offer insight into the mechanisms of body fat …

Hydrogen Sulfide Concentration In Vicinity Of Beef Cattle Feedlots, Richard K. Koelsch, Bryan L. Woodbury, David E. Stenberg, Daniel N. Miller, Dennis D. Schulte
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A field survey of Total Reduced Sulfur (TRS) concentrations in the vicinity of beef cattle feedlots was conducted to compare field observations against current regulatory thresholds. It was observed that TRS levels in the vicinity of beef cattle feedlots are not likely to exceed current regulatory thresholds used by Nebraska. It was further noted concentration of TRS varies with air temperature and time of day. However, wet feedlot surface conditions had almost no impact upon observed TRS concentrations. Feedlots typically do not contribute significant hydrogen sulfide emissions and are unlikely to produce concentrations in excess of current Nebraska Department of …
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 1244 Pilin Glycan: Surface Location And Induction Of Immune Response, Erica Sentgeorge Jewell
Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 1244 Pilin Glycan: Surface Location And Induction Of Immune Response, Erica Sentgeorge Jewell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
P. aeruginosa 1244 pilin is covalently modified with a carbohydrate moiety, which is structurally similar to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen repeating unit. Studies were conducted using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with the monoclonal glycan-specific antibody, 11.14, to determine the location of the glycan. It was found that the glycan is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the pilin fiber and not restricted to the tip. The immunogenicity of the pilin glycan was also studied. Rabbits were immunized with pure LPS-free pili to determine if the pili produce anti-LPS antibodies. The serum obtained from the rabbits was …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Mouse populations differing in metabolic rate have been developed through selection for high (MH) and low (ML) heat loss, along with the unselected controls (MC). Objectives of the study were to compare the MH, ML, and MC lines for reproductive performance, pup survival, and metabolic hormones when reared at 12, 22, and 31°C, and to search for line × environment interactions. Conception and litter size were recorded on the parent generation mice introduced to the environments at 11 wk of age and bred after a 3-wk acclimatization period. Survival of pups (pre-weaning to 3 wk; post-weaning from 3 to 9 …
Application Of Pyrolysis-Gc/Ms For Rapid Assessment Of Organic Contamination In Sediments From Barcelona Harbor, Michael A. Kruge, Albert Permanyer
Application Of Pyrolysis-Gc/Ms For Rapid Assessment Of Organic Contamination In Sediments From Barcelona Harbor, Michael A. Kruge, Albert Permanyer
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Pyrolysis-GC/MS is advantageous as a tool for rapid sediment contamination assessment because of the small sample size required, minimal sample preparation, and its ability to detect a wide variety of organic pollutants as well as naturally-occurring biological materials. Py-GC/MS was applied, together with determination of organic carbon, and major and minor element concentrations, to evaluate potentially contaminated sediments in the port of Barcelona (Spain) and the adjacent Llobregat River delta. Detected contaminant markers, most evident in the Old Port (Port Vell) area, included hopanes and alkylated PAHs (petroleum), sterenes (sewage), C16-C19 phenylalkanes (detergents) and parent …

The Bush Doctrine: Making Or Breaking Customary International Law, Joel R. Paul
The Bush Doctrine: Making Or Breaking Customary International Law, Joel R. Paul
UC Law SF International Law Review
The international legal system operates to minimize violence. This paper examines whether the Bush Doctrine violates or creates international law. If the Bush Doctrine is understood to mean that only the United States may use force preemptively, then it is not creating law; it is merely a unilateral assertion of power. If, on the other hand, all states may use the Bush Doctrine to act to prevent war, then violence is maximized. In order for the Bush Doctrine to be accepted as law, there must be a limiting principle.
