Data Sets

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 2004.

A Focus Of Human Infection By Haplorchis Taichui (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) In The Southern Philippines, Vicente Y. Belizario Jr., Winifreda U. De Leon, Mary Joan J. Bersabe, Purnomo, J. Kevin Baird, Michael J. Bangs Jan 2004

A Focus Of Human Infection By Haplorchis Taichui (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) In The Southern Philippines, Vicente Y. Belizario Jr., Winifreda U. De Leon, Mary Joan J. Bersabe, Purnomo, J. Kevin Baird, Michael J. Bangs

United States Navy: Publications

We report an exceptionally high rate of infection by Haplorchis taichui (Nishigori, 1924) in human populations on Mindanao Island, southern Philippines. This intestinal fluke is seldom encountered, and this is the first report of high prevalence of infection (36%) in humans by H. taichui in the Philippines. The likely source of haplorchine infection has been linked to consumption of raw or undercooked freshwater fish containing infective metacercariae. The most common clinical symptoms appeared as upper abdominal discomfort or pain and borborygmi. Praziquantel (75 mg/kg divided in 3 doses in 1 day) was a well-tolerated and effective treatment for infection by …

Red Imported Fire Ant Impacts On Wildlife: A Decade Of Research, C. R. Allen, D. M. Epperson, A. S. Garmestani Jan 2004

Red Imported Fire Ant Impacts On Wildlife: A Decade Of Research, C. R. Allen, D. M. Epperson, A. S. Garmestani

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

The negative impacts of biological invasion are economically and ecologically significant and, while incompletely quantified, they are clearly substantial. Ants (family Formicidae) are an important, although often overlooked, component of many terrestrial ecosystems. Six species of ants are especially striking in their global ability to invade, and their impacts. This paper focuses on the impacts of the most destructive of those species, the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), and focuses on impacts on native vertebrates. Red imported fire ants often become the dominant ant species in infested areas outside of their native range due to their aggressive …

RATIONALE: Proteomic technology has been shown to have distinct advantages for allergen characterization and identification. Therefore, we have used 2-D electrophoresis and protein microarrays to characterize the profile of allergens and assess their level in lentils.

METHODS: Lentil varieties were extracted and centrifuged to obtain 2S, 7S and 11S fractions. The profile of IgE-binding proteins in these fractions was assessed using lentil-allergic sera, by immunoblotting of 2-D electrophoretic separations. The level of IgE-binding was also assessed using protein microarrays. Arrays of covalently attached proteins were first incubated with lentil-allergic sera, followed by incubation with fluorescently- labeled anti-IgE detection antibody. Laser-induced …

A New Corps Of Discovery For Missouri River Management, Sandi Zellmer Jan 2004

A New Corps Of Discovery For Missouri River Management, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The Missouri River is representative of a nationwide phenomenon. The Law of the River is evolving from water quantity allocation, reflecting well-settled prior appropriation law and decades-old interstate compacts to broader ecologically-based requirements. From sturgeon to salmon to silvery minnows, every major river system in western United States is now managed, at least in part, pursuant to contemporary environmental legislation, which has begun to eclipse traditional water law. Just look to the Rio Grandel6 and the Klamath River17 for the extensive changes wrought by the ESA. The need for river restoration in order to meet ecological needs has been a …
