Summary Of Total Mercury Concentrations In Fillets Of Selected Sport Fishes Collected During 2000–2003 From Lake Natoma, Sacramento County, California, Michael K. Saiki, Darell G. Slotten, Thomas W. May, Shaun M. Ayers, Charles N. Alpers

United States Geological Survey: Publications

This report summarizes results of total mercury measurements in skinless fillets of sport fishes collected during August 2000, September–October 2002, and July 2003 from Lake Natoma, a small (8,760 acre-feet) afterbay for Folsom Dam on the lower American River. The primary objective of the study was to determine if mercury concentrations in fillets approached or exceeded guidelines for human consumption. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) human-health action level for methylmercury in commercially caught fish is 1.0 μg/g (microgram per gram); the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) human-health criterion for methylmercury residue in fish tissue is 0.30 μg/g. Wet weight …

Thinking About Science And Christian Orthodox Beliefs: A Survey Study Of Preservice Elementary Teachers, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving Jan 2004

Thinking About Science And Christian Orthodox Beliefs: A Survey Study Of Preservice Elementary Teachers, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Since its origination with Andrew Dickson White, the Warfare Metaphor has been used to characterize the relationship between science and religion, specifically orthodox Christianity. Though thoroughly discredited by historians of science, the ideological descendants of Thomas Huxley, who spoke of science in quasi-religious terms, have kept the Warfare Metaphor alive. On the other hand, there are substantial numbers of Christians who at least appear to oppose science given their high-profile opposition to the general theory of evolution. The purpose of the research reported in this paper was to examine this specific question: does anti-science sentiment increase with increasing orthodox Christian …

Probing Proteinase Active Sites Using Oriented Peptide Mixture Libraries – Adam-10, John L. Krstenansky, Jihong Wang, Gregg R. Chenail, Matthew R. Tiffany, Geoffrey M. Kuesters, Barbara C. Natke, John L. Nestor Jr. Jan 2004

Probing Proteinase Active Sites Using Oriented Peptide Mixture Libraries – Adam-10, John L. Krstenansky, Jihong Wang, Gregg R. Chenail, Matthew R. Tiffany, Geoffrey M. Kuesters, Barbara C. Natke, John L. Nestor Jr.

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Oriented Peptide Mixture Libraries can provide a full matrix of preferred and disfavored amino acids at each subsite of an optimal substrate for a new proteinase. This approach is rapid and convenient, requiring only two mixture libraries to complete the analysis. In this paper we demonstrate an extension of this type of analysis, using a focused library employing unnatural amino acids to probe the depth of the S1 position in the catalytic site of the alpha secretase ADAM-10. This analysis indicates that ADAM- 10 will accept amino acids with substantial length and hydrophobicity (e.g. 2- naphthylalanine), but suggests that the …

Sex Determination For Federal Purposes: Is Transsexual Immigration Via Marriage Permissible Under The Defense Of Marriage Act?, John A. Fisher Jan 2004

Sex Determination For Federal Purposes: Is Transsexual Immigration Via Marriage Permissible Under The Defense Of Marriage Act?, John A. Fisher

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Part I describes the federal immigration benefits available to spouses of most U.S. citizens and presents the historical and contemporary obstacles that prohibit these benefits from being extended to gays and lesbians. It then addresses DOMA's failure to define "opposite sex," and hence DOMA's failure to indicate whether post-operative transsexuals, or their partners, should be given "spousal status" under current U.S. immigration law. Part II examines traditional and modern notions of sex. It traces state legal approaches to transsexual marriage and ultimately disentangles the formalistic rhetoric that obfuscates the reasoning in those cases. In particular, Part II focuses on a …

The Priority Of Respect: How Our Common Humanity Can Ground Our Individual Dignity, Richard Stith Jan 2004

The Priority Of Respect: How Our Common Humanity Can Ground Our Individual Dignity, Richard Stith

Law Faculty Publications

In this essay, we notice that the priority of persons, the unbridgeable political gap between persons and mere things, corresponds to a special sort of moral and legal treatment for persons, namely, as irreplaceable individuals. Normative language that conflates the category of person with fungible kinds of being can thus appear to justify destroying and replacing human beings, just as we do with things. Lethal consequences may result, for example, from a common but improper extension of the word “value” to persons. The attitude and act called “respect” brings forth much more adequately than “value” the distinctively individual priority of …

Bush Project Anthology Volume 1, South Dakota State University Jan 2004

Bush Project Anthology Volume 1, South Dakota State University

Bush Project Anthology

Well over a decade ago, the late Ernest Boyer authored his much heralded work titled Scholarship Reconsidered, and academia quickly began to recognize a variety of meaningful scholarship activities including the scholarship of discovery, integration, application and teaching. Boyer insisted that the scholarship of teaching is a serious and very meaningful form of scholarship associated with what faculty members do to achieve success in the profession of teaching. He also insisted that the scholarship of teaching needs to be transformed from a very private form of scholarship to a much more public form of scholarship. The scholarship of teaching that …

Physical Forcing Of Phytoplankton Community Structure And Primary Production In Continental Shelf Waters Of The Western Antarctic Peninsula, Barbara B. Prezelin, Eileen E. Hofmann, Mark A. Moline, John M. Klinck Jan 2004

Physical Forcing Of Phytoplankton Community Structure And Primary Production In Continental Shelf Waters Of The Western Antarctic Peninsula, Barbara B. Prezelin, Eileen E. Hofmann, Mark A. Moline, John M. Klinck

Biological Sciences

Analyses of a multidisciplinary data set, collected in continental shelf waters of the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) during austral summer of January 1993, identified a previously unrecognized forcing mechanism that sets up a physical and chemical structure that supports and assures site-specific diatom-dominated communities and enhanced biological production (Prézelin et al., 2000). This forcing is active when the southern boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) flows along the shelf edge, thereby facilitating onshelf bottom intrusions of nutrient-rich Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW), which then is upwelled or mixed into the upper water column. At times or locations where UCDW …

Bulimia: Medical Complications, Philip S. Mehler, Cynthia Crews, Kenneth Weiner Jan 2004

Bulimia: Medical Complications, Philip S. Mehler, Cynthia Crews, Kenneth Weiner

Nursing Faculty Publications

Bulimia nervosa is a common eating disorder that predominantly affects young women. There are three main models of purging in bulimia. Resulting medical complications are related to the particular mode and frequency of purging. Commonly, there are oral and gastrointestinal complications along with serious electrolyte and endocrine complications. The majority of the medical complications of bulimia nervosa are treatable if diagnosed in a timely fashion. Some of these patients require inpatient hospitalization, and others can be managed along a continuum of outpatient care. The American Psychiatric Association has comprehensive treatment guidelines for the management of bulimia. Primary care physicians and …
