Organochlorine Pesticides In Chlorioallantoic Membranes Of Morelet's Crocodile Eggs From Belize, Christopher B. Pepper, Thomas R. Rainwater, Steven G. Platt, Jennifer A. Dever, Todd A. Anderson, Scott T. Mcmurry

Biology Faculty Publications

Recent studies examined the utility of the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) as a nonlethal, noninvasive indicator of environmental contaminant exposure in oviparous wildlife. The CAM is a highly vascularized extraembryonic membrane that functions as a site for respiration, nutrient transport, and waste storage during embryonic development. After hatching, the CAM is usually discarded with the eggshell and can be used for chemical residue analysis. Chorioallantoic membranes have been used successfully to examine contaminant exposure and predict chemical concentrations in multiple species of birds and reptiles. In this study, we examined organochlorine (OC) pesticide concentrations in CAMs from eggs of Morelet's crocodiles …

A Bioeconomic Model Of The Great Salt Lake Watershed, David Finnoff, Arthur J. Caplan Jan 2004

A Bioeconomic Model Of The Great Salt Lake Watershed, David Finnoff, Arthur J. Caplan

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We present a computable general equilibrium model of the interface between the Great Salt Lake (GSL) ecosystem and the regional economy that impacts the ecosystem. With respect to the ecosystem, the model treats the various representative species as net-energy maximizers and bases population dynamics on the period-by-period sizes of surplus net energy. Energy markets-where predators and prey exchange biomass-determine equilibrium energy prices. With respect to the regional economy, we model five production sectors (at the aggregate industry level)-brine cyst harvesters, the mineral-extraction industry, agriculture, recreation, and a composite-good industry-as well as the household sector. By performing dynamic simulations of the …

Effects Of Cooking On Radiocesium In Fish From The Savannah River: Exposure Differences For The Public, Joanna Burger, Karen F. Gaines, C. Shane Boring, J. Snodgrass, W. L. Stephens Jr., M. Gochfeld

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Understanding the factors that contribute to the risk from fish consumption is an important public health concern because of potential adverse effects of radionuclides, organochlorines, other pesticides, and mercury. Risk from consumption is normally computed on the basis of contaminant levels in fish, meal frequency, and meal size, yet cooking practices may also affect risk. This study examines the effect of deep-frying on radiocesium (137Cs) levels and risk to people fishing along the Savannah River. South Carolina and Georgia have issued consumption advisories for the Savannah River, based partly on 137Cs. 137Cs levels were significantly higher in the cooked fish …

Fecal Coliform Contamination During Rain Events In Sayler's Creek, Virginia, Blake Robertson

Theses & Honors Papers

The Appomattox River basin, which is part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, is an extremely vital resource that many people depend on. Therefore the quality of the water is of great importance to many. Often, the water is assessed for the amount of pollutants that is in the water to ensure that it meets the standards laid out in the Clean Water Act. If water doesn’t meet these standards, then a plan is created to improve the quality of the water. In the state of Virginia, the most common cause of water failing to meet the standards is the result …

Strain Experienced By Caregivers Of Dementia Patients Receiving Palliative Care: Findings From The Palliative Excellence In Alzheimer’S Care Efforts (Peace) Program, Sadhna Diwan, Gavin W. Hougham, Greg A. Sachs

Faculty Publications

Programs that provide palliative care to individuals with dementia, which is a progressive terminal illness, are likely to encounter different issues (e.g., management of problem behaviors, caregiver strain extending over years) from those typically addressed by hospice programs. Little research is available on palliative care for individuals with dementia who live in the community. This study examines predictors of types of strain experienced by caregivers of community-dwelling patients with dementia enrolled in a unique demonstration program titled Palliative Excellence in Alzheimer Care Efforts (PEACE), which moved palliative care"upstream," integrating palliative care into the primary care of patients with dementia.Data were collected …

Human-Robot Interaction, Erika Rogers Jan 2004

Human-Robot Interaction, Erika Rogers

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The relationship between robots and humans is so different in character from other human-machine relationships that it warrants its own field of study. Robots differ from simple machines and even from complex computers in that they are often designed to be mobile and autonomous. They are not as predictable as other machines; they can enter a human’s personal space, forcing a kind of social interaction that does not happen in other human-machine relationships.

Attempts To Locate Culex Tarsalis Larvae In Traditional Mosquito - Breeding Habitats From Brookings County, South Dakota, M. L. Hart, M. B. Hildreth

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

A total of 33 potential mosquito breeding sites were identified and selected during the early spring of 2003. These mosquito habitats were selected from both natural and urban settings within Brookings County, Sd, and represented the various classifications of habitats potentially used by various mosquito species for larval development including: flowing streams, ponded streams, lake edges, swamps and marshes, shallow-permanent ponds, shallow-temporary pools, intermittent- ephemeral puddles, natural containers and artificial containers. These sites were monitored weekly during the summer for the condition of the water and sampled for the presence of mosquito larvae. A standard collection of 10 “dips” using …

Ig V Region Restrictions In Human Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Suggest Some Cases Have A Common Origin, Grant R. Kolar, J. Donald Capra

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The factors that contribute to the development of B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) are unknown, and the groups of individuals at the greatest risk for developing this common leukemia are not well defined. Molecular features are important for classifying cases of B-CLL, and it is now apparent that similarities among Ig rearrangements between patients may give important clues to the origin of this disease (see the related article beginning on page 1008).

Human Immunoglobulin Selection Associated With Class Switch And Possible Tolerogenic Origins For Cδ Class-Switched B Cells, Nai Ying Zheng, Kenneth Wilson, Xiaojian Wang, Angela Boston, Grant Kolar, Stephen M. Jackson, Yong Jun Liu, Virginia Pascual, J. Donald Capra, Patrick C. Wilson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Current paradigms of peripheral B cell selection suggest that autoreactive B cells are controlled by clonal deletion, anergy, and developmental arrest. We report that changes to the human antibody repertoire likely resulting from these mechanisms both for a well-characterized autoreactivity from antibodies encoded by the VH4-34 gene and for other hallmarks of an autoreactive repertoire are apparent mainly for class-switched B cells and not for IgM germinal center, IgM memory, or IgM plasma cells. Other possible indicators of autoreactivity found selected with immunoglobulin class include JH6 gene segment usage, increased frequency of B cells with long third hypervariable regions, and …
